Cucumber is an annual monoecious (dioecious) plant, that is, it has female and male flowers. They are distinguished as follows: the female flower under the inflorescence has a thickening (the future cucumber), the male flower does not have it. The more female flowers (and pollinated female flowers), the higher the yield of cucumbers.

Female flowers must be pollinated (cucumber is also a cross-pollinated plant). Pollination occurs with the help of insects or wind, sometimes the gardener has to do it manually (below is a mini-instruction on what to do). The source of pollen is the male flower.

It is the male flowers of cucumbers in the people are called barren flowers. Male flowers do not form the ovary, they only produce the pollen necessary for pollination. They are empty, barren. It happens that on a garden of male flowers there are much more than female flowers, as a result - there is no harvest. The reasons for this phenomenon are several.

By the way!

In no case should not pick off male flowers (barren) on cucumbers, although among vegetable growers there is an opinion that they take away power from plants. Without pollination, the fruits will not be tied, unopened female flowers will simply fall off.

Why are cucumbers empty?

So, we found that on the bed with cucumbers - mostly just barren (male flowers). Why? It is very important to analyze this moment, because the elimination of the cause, the correction of mistakes is nothing but the opportunity to return the harvest!

  1. Plants are starving. What to do? Need feeding! Once every 2 weeks should be alternated with the application of organic and mineral fertilizers. First we give a solution of mullein (1:10) or bird droppings (1:20). Solution consumption: 500 ml per 1 plant. Before feeding the bed well shed water. This is followed by fertilizing with mineral fertilizers, you can take nitrophoska (1 matchbox per 10 liters of water, consumption: 500 ml per 1 plant).
  2. Excess nitrogen in the soil causes a rapid growth of green mass and intensive formation of barren flowers on cucumbers. What to do? To restore the balance of nutrients can be using fertilizing. Cucumbers are fed with superphosphate (2 tablespoons per 10 liters of water) or infusion of wood ash.
  3. Sowing fresh seeds. It is known that plants with a large number of female flowers form from old seeds, and fresh (last year) plants give a solid waste flower. What to do? For sowing, you can use fresh seeds if you pre-heat them or soak them in Epin-Extra, Zircon or Novosile, according to the instructions for use.
  4. Mealy dew reduces the number of female flowers. What to do? Measures are needed to prevent a dangerous disease: 1 time in 3-4 weeks dilute 4 g of colloidal sulfur powder in 1 liter of water and spray cucumber leaves. Solution consumption: 1 liter per 10 square meters of landings.
  5. Drought During a drought, plants form fewer female flowers. What to do? In dry weather, watering is necessary.
  6. Unfavourable conditions. In the shade, on dense clay soils, in thickened plantings, cucumbers grow poorly and produce a lot of barren flowers. What to do? It is possible to stimulate the formation of female flowers by pinching the tops of cucumbers, this will give an impetus to the growth of side shoots with female flowers even in adverse conditions. It will also be useful to mulch the soil with humus.

What to do? Feed!

Locally for every reason we found a solution. But there are also universal ways to ensure that cucumbers no longer form empty flowers. On the modern market there are several drugs that allow you to achieve an equilibrium in the ratio of female-male flowers:

Preparations should be used according to the instructions on the package. But so that the principle of their use is clear, let us make a brief review.

The drug "Bud" is a complex of macro-and micronutrients necessary for proper nutrition of plants. "Bud" stimulates the formation of fruits, increasing yields. It is used for feeding cucumbers, zucchini, potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants. In 10 liters of water dissolve 10 g of the drug (available in powder form). These cultures are sprayed in the budding phase, at the beginning of flowering, during the formation of ovaries. Solution consumption: 4 liters per 10 square meters.

The drug "Ovary" is a biological growth promoter. It contains in its composition substances that stimulate the growth of plants, as well as macro-and micronutrients. "Ovary" compensates for the lack of nutrients in the soil, contributes to the formation of ovaries and fruits, increasing the yield of tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, peas. For feeding cucumbers and zucchini drug diluted in proportion: 2 g to 1.4 liters of water. Plants are sprayed 2 times: at the beginning of flowering and in the midst of flowering. Solution consumption: 600 ml per 10 square meters. Attention! For other cultures - their dosage.

In the course of the research it was found that the preparations “Bud” and “Ovary” are safe for bees and humans. And by the time the fruit ripens, the drugs are removed from the plant tissues in a natural way.

The drug "Borogum" has many nutrients in its composition, the leading place among which is boron. It contributes to the formation of flowers, ovaries and, as a result, a large number of fruits. This is the advertisement we found in one of the country magazines. We publish this image in a blog not as an advertisement, but solely for information:

Unrottled female flowers are also barren

Even if a sufficient number of female flowers have formed on the plants, this does not mean at all that they will all produce a crop. Unpeeled female flowers are also, in essence, barren flowers. Without pollination, the ovary will not turn into a fetus, unopened female flowers will simply fall off.

The first reason why cucumbers have a lot of unopened female flowers is the erroneous planting of cross-swimming varieties intended for open ground in a closed greenhouse. What to do? Open windows and doors wider into the greenhouse, let pollinating insects into it. Under greenhouse conditions you can try pollinate plants by hand:

Now you understand why there is no crop of cucumbers in the greenhouse? 😉 Probably, you planted in a greenhouse varieties for open ground, which should be pollinated by bees (in the greenhouse because they have limited access). Parthenocarpic varieties (not requiring pollination) are more suitable for greenhouses. And if it so happened that by mistake they planted a variety for open ground in the greenhouse, pollination can be done manually.

The second reason - in rainy weather insects showed low activity, so pollination did not occur. What to do? Again, manual pollination is required.

Pollinating cucumbers

One male flower is enough for pollination of 4-5 women. A male flower is torn off and all the petals are carefully removed from it, trying not to damage the stamens with pollen. Male flower is enough to hold several times in the female specimen. You can simply put it inside or use a brush.

It is most effective to carry out pollination during the first hours of flowering, when pollen is most viable. The optimum air temperature for pollination: +25 degrees. At high (+30 degrees) and low temperatures (+15 degrees) pollen properties are reduced.

In greenhouses to create air flow, which also contribute to the pollination of female flowers, you can often open the vents, doors, put fans.

So, empty cucumbers are:

  • barren flower - these are the flowers that do not give the ovary,
  • male flowers, which by their nature do not form ovaries, but are necessary only for pollination of female flowers,
  • female flowers, left without pollination.

The reasons why cucumbers bloom like barren flowers, we found out. They also collected recommendations from various sources about what can be done in this situation. We hope the information was useful for you, we hope for your comments at the end of the article 😉 We will be happy if you share your own experience on the topic! It is important for all of us, gardeners and gardeners of the country.

Causes of

Flowers and a significant quantitative inequality of their ratio in favor of the male or female type of flowering is the most accurate indicator of the state of the culture. It happens that on the same bed of cucumber empty flowers prevail, and on the other - female flowers. Bad and the first and second. The yield of both beds will be low, unless they pereopilyatsya among themselves. But not always the landlord will be pleased with the re-grader, especially in cases when he plans to get not only a quantitative crop, but also high-quality seed material.

Identify male flower is easy: it is attached to a thin stalk. A female flower appears on a thickened area, resembling a miniature cucumber in appearance. Flowers and an internal structure differ, but for beginner summer residents determination of the sex of a flower by its leg is the easiest and fastest way. The main causes of barren flowers lie in the wrong agrotechnology of cultivation of crops, conditions of detention (microclimate), the wrong selection and preparation of seeds.

Consider more.

  • Poor selection of seeds and varieties - one of the main causes of cucumber barren in home gardens. Few gardeners know that cucumber seeds for sowing should be at least 3 years old, better at the age of 4 years. Last year's seeds need to sow as a last resort and after heat treatment. Plants grown from fresh, untreated seeds are almost always doomed to barren flowers. The same expects those plants of cucumber, the variety of which does not correspond to the area of cultivation (the climate does not fit).
  • Malnutrition - Another common reason for the delay in the formation of female flowers. The unbalanced content in the soil of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus disrupts the normal development of cucumber. Especially the phenomenon of barren flowers is manifested with a lack of phosphorus and an excess of nitrogen. "Excessive" nitrogen gives the rapid growth of lashes and leaves of cucumber, as well as abundant male flowering.
  • Insufficient lighting in dense plantings or in shady places of the plot leads to the absence of female flowers on the cucumber bed. Cucumbers need a lot of light for normal reproduction. It is necessary to withstand the scheme of planting seedlings or sowing of seeds in order to prevent crowding and interweaving of plants, and choose a site for cucumbers far away from high plantations.
  • Watering cucumber plantings with cold water method of sprinkling harms plants. Water should not be colder than the soil temperature at the time of irrigation. Such watering can not only upset the balance of tying female and male flowers, but also lead to other plant diseases.
  • High air temperature exceeding +27 degrees, is sterile for fruiting cucumber. The optimum temperature of reproduction for this culture is in the range from +22 to +25 degrees.

There are other reasons that novice gardeners may not pay attention due to the lack of information about them. This applies to the technique of pinching the main stem after 6 or 8 leaves, the selection of seeds only from the “female” cucumber during their independent harvesting, as well as the correct treatment of the seeds before sowing. Any reasons in the aggregate (and even one) of the above can cause trouble to an inattentive gardener, having showered cucumber plantings with barren flowers.

Do I need to break off?

Male flowers for fruiting need no less than female ones, as they pollinate the latter. Breaking barren flowers in the absence of females does not solve the problem of their new appearance, but reduces the protective functions of the plant and causes stress. Only cases of pollination of those beds where mainly female flowers are present make sense of breaking off. It is better to use the time spent on meaningless disruption of wastewater to use it to identify and eliminate the causes from which cucumbers do not grow. And also the fact that female flowers die off without a sufficient number of males is noticed.

In the greenhouses planted varieties of self-pollinated cucumbers. The reason for this - the lack of wind and a small number of insects, through which the pollination of female flowers. But even when growing self-pollinated varieties, it is necessary to move cucumber whips more often, shake them for a stable process of selfing.. The most effective for a good harvest is the ratio of different sex flowers, this is when they bloom in equal quantities. Only then the bed blooms, small cucumbers are tied, and the harvest looks solid.

Self-pollinated varieties are not planted in open ground. They are not adapted to the harsh conditions of detention. A sharp change in air temperature at night and during the day, cold precipitation can ruin cucumbers of greenhouse varieties.

How to get rid?

So that the bed does not grow into wasteland from the very beginning, you should get rid of the causes of it. To combat the abundance of male flowers can be the following folk remedies.

  • Using the method of pinching the main stem in early cucumbers in the area between 8 and 10 leaves, and in the later - between 6 and 8. This method allows the bush not to grow, which would lead to its thickening and a new reason for the formation of barren flowers, and also contributes to the regrowth of the side branches, on which exactly female flowers like to be tied. Pinching is a simple cut with the shears of the top of the stem at a chosen location, stopping further growth of the stem. With this operation, you can not hesitate, pinching is better to do before flowering.
  • Extra root treatment of cucumber beds with boric acid solution. Processing has a positive effect on the setting of female flowers. The solution is easy to prepare: you will need 5 g of boric acid, mixed in 10 liters of water.
  • Choosing the right mode of watering cucumber planting in cases of barren flowers. Experienced gardeners recommend watering as follows: before flowering - moderate, 2-3 times a week, during flowering - no more than 1 time. If hollow flowers are noticed, then stop watering altogether before the lower leaves dry. Such a measure often leads to the abundant appearance of female flowers. Just do not bring to a strong drying out of the soil.

In addition to these methods of getting rid of the barren flower, it is important to control plant fertilizing (when flowering, cucumbers should be given a dry mullein, but without contact with leaves and stems), soil moisture (not over-wetted), sparse bushes that help the normal development of plants.

Prevention

To prevent the formation of empty cucumber, it is best to make a competent selection of varieties and seeds, which must be certified and purchased from reliable manufacturers, as well as their mandatory presowing treatment. If the seeds are yours, then you need to take them from the "female" fruits, which differ from the "male" ones by the presence of four seed chambers (the "male" cucumbers have three chambers with seeds). It is necessary to soak the seeds before sowing in a solution of potassium permanganate and process it with means that improve the growth and immunity of future plants (for example, Novosilom or Zircon). Landings, the seeds of which were treated with the aforementioned agents, showed an increase in yield and decrease in barren flower.

Seeds are selected dense and large. As noted, the age of the seeds is at least 3 years. Fresh seeds need to be dried by prolonged heating in a bag on a radiator. By moderate heating for 1 month, the seed protein loses moisture and activity, so the cucumber will grow without haste, and begin to bear fruit at the right moment of development of the plant. To prevention should include the frequency of planting in the garden. In the row between the plants should be at least 45 cm, and between the rows - at least 80 cm. It is necessary to calculate the plantings so that no more than 4-5 plants fit 1 m2. Harvesting should be done 1 time in two days.

Pustulete cucumber is a frequent occurrence in the garden, but this problem is solvable and preventable in the period of seed preparation, plant development, flowering and fruiting. It is only necessary to notice the trouble in time and get rid of it correctly.

Useful properties of cucumbers

From school everyone knows that this vegetable is 97% water. But the remaining 3% have a very interesting composition of vitamins and minerals. Of course, their number is too small to cover the daily need of the human body. But as an addition to the full menu is very help.

We will not describe the properties of all the vitamins and minerals contained in fresh cucumbers, just describe the beneficial effects.

Potassium is recognized as the most valuable in fresh cucumbers. Laboratory studies have shown that this microelement is vital for the proper functioning of the heart and vascular system.

A large amount of water in the vegetable allows, when consumed, to achieve a competent diuretic effect. It should be recognized that fresh cucumbers do not flush out calcium and other useful substances from the body, as chemical preparations do.

This water is similar in composition to distilled liquid. Therefore, fresh cucumber juice perfectly quenches thirst. At the same time, it removes harmful substances, toxins and slags from the body.

The magic juice of fresh cucumbers has another amazing property. Due to the natural organic acid in the composition, it is able to:

  • remove salt from the body and joints,
  • растворять песок и камни в почках,
  • убирать холестериновые бляшки из сосудов,
  • вымывать свободные радикалы,
  • улучшать свойства крови.

As you can see, it is not so simple, this ordinary fresh cucumber. For example, with gout, it greatly relieves the general condition and relieves pain somewhat.

What is barren flower on cucumbers

The reason for empty flowers on cucumbers is the variety of cucumbers.

Cucumbers are monoecious plants, that is, they have both female and male flowers formed on the same plant. As a rule, male flowers form first on the main shoot, female and hermaphroditic flowers alternate with male ones begin to form closer to the top, and over time mostly female flowers appear on the side shoots. But not all varieties of male and female flowers are formed simultaneously. Given the fact that cucumber flowers bloom just one day, this can be a serious problem.

Fortunately, this problem can be helped by artificially “spurring” the plant to the rapid formation of female flowers.

Do not forget that there are seedless (parthenocarpic) varieties of cucumbers that do not need pollination, and self-pollinating cucumbers, which have a stamen and a pistil on one flower. But if we are talking about ordinary cucumbers, give preference to proven varieties from reliable producers, which suit your climate.

The reason for hollow flowers on cucumbers - the thickening of crops

The old folk wisdom, which should be remembered when planting not only cucumbers, but also other cultures, says: "Do not plant thickly - it will be empty!" In addition, with very dense plantings increases the risk of developing diseases and pest damage.

To prevent this, cucumber seedlings should be planted, adhering to the prescribed scheme and observing the prescribed distance between plants. On average, per 1 sq.m. It is recommended to plant no more than 4-5 seedlings (depending on their variety).

The reason for empty flowers on cucumbers is improper watering.

One of the main reasons for the delay in the appearance of female flowers is watering with cold water. Therefore, it is always necessary to water only warm (not below plus 23-25 degrees), warmed by water in the sun.

If there are a lot of empty flowers, stop watering for a while, make the cucumbers worry. And you will see: the ovaries will become larger.

By the way. In greenhouses, you should not grow parthenocarpic and non-parthenocarpic (that is, pollinating) cucumber varieties at the same time. Otherwise, the former will lose their shape and taste, grow and bear fruit much worse.

Is it necessary to tear off the ovary on cucumbers

But even when growing self-pollinated varieties, it is necessary to move the cucumber whips more often, shake them for a stable process of self-pollination.

How to get rid of barren flowers on cucumbers

In cold weather - cover the cucumbers film. Change the mode of watering, if he became the cause of emptying.

It is advisable to feed the plants with fertilizers that can be both chemical and organic. Of chemical, for example, you can apply the following fertilizer - 1 tbsp. Spoon nitrofoski divorced in 1 bucket of water.

From organic - cow dung is diluted with water in proportions 1: 5, infused for two weeks (nitrogen fertilizer) or 1 cup of ash is diluted in 1 liter of water and infused (calcium and potash fertilizer), watered under the root.

Increase the number of the ovary as well help drugs "Ovary" or "Bud."

Why a lot of barren flowers on cucumbers in the greenhouse

When planting cucumbers should be borne in mind that each variety needs certain conditions of care and cultivation. Why cucumbers poorly form the ovary and appear on the branches numerous barren flowers, depends on many factors:

  • planting substandard seeds,
  • too dense sowing of seedlings,
  • lack of heat (below 15 degrees) or vice versa too hot air (more than 30 degrees),
  • lack of timely watering or excess moisture,
  • the location of the beds in a shaded place
  • use for watering cold water
  • empty flowers on cucumbers are due to insufficient pollination (for greenhouses it is recommended to choose self-pollinated varieties of cucumbers),
  • the reason may be the lack or excess of any nutrient in the soil.

Before fighting with empty flowers, it is important to understand whether they are needed by the plant and, if so, why. Pustototsvety (male flowers) are needed for pollination by the plant, since it is in them that the stamens are found. Without them, you can not get a rich harvest. Therefore, vegetable growers who tear down empty flowers notice that without them, female flowers begin to wither, rot and fall.

But when the barren flowers become larger than the female flowers, there is a threat of a decrease in yield. Experienced gardeners advise: “Do not tear the barren flowers, this leads to a decrease in the protective forces of the plant. In addition, if there are no male flowers, then pollination will not occur. It is enough to pinch the top of the main stem to improve the situation. ” Some remove only weak male inflorescences.

You can choose to plant cucumber parthenocarpic varieties. They are able to form fruits without pollination, only female flowers form on bushes, and there are no seeds in the fruits. These varieties are particularly suitable for growing in regions with an unfavorable climate. The most popular varieties include: Zozulya, Competitor, Masha F1, Herman F1 or Emelya F1.

Self-pollinated cucumbers are pollinated by themselves, without the participation of insects. These varieties of cucumbers are perfect for growing in greenhouse conditions or on the windowsill. The flowers of such plants have both stamen and pistil, and inside the cucumber there are seeds.

In open beds it is better to plant bee-pollinated varieties of cucumbers. They are more resistant to adverse weather conditions. To attract insect pollinators, you can use sweet solutions.

When the process of pollination is disturbed, barren flowers begin to form on cucumbers, and the harvest is significantly reduced.

What to do if barren flowers on cucumbers

The first step, to combat the emptying of cucumbers, is to change the care and create more favorable conditions for growing the crop.

If there is one barren flower, then it is necessary to carry out weeding from the weeds in a timely manner, to loosen the earth after each irrigation so that oxygen and nutrients in full reach the roots. It is best to support and tie up the stem. There are other recommendations on how to get rid of wasteland.

  • If the reason for the formation of male flowers associated with cold, then the beds are better to cover the film and stop watering. Netherwood on cucumbers in a greenhouse may appear due to the cool temperature below 15 degrees. Therefore, you need to monitor the night and day temperature in the room.
  • During hot, rainy weather should increase the frequency of watering up to twice a day, in the morning and evening hours.
  • Watering cucumbers in a greenhouse and in the open field is necessary only with warm, settled water. At a time when cucumbers are blooming, watering is reduced. In this case, the plant will direct all forces to the formation of fruits, not green tops.
  • What to do when the cucumbers in the greenhouse empty up, there is another proven option. If cucumbers are densely planted, then you can limit the frequency of watering and pinch the main stem.

  • If there is no ovary, you need to think about fertilizer. You can use nitrophoska, infusion of mullein or wood ash.
  • If the cucumbers have empty flowers due to the lack of pollination, then the plant can be helped in this. To do this, it is enough to shake the stem slightly during flowering, or to brush along the barren flowers and then the female flowers.
  • To increase the number of ovaries, it is possible to prepare solutions based on such preparations as Ovary, Bud.
  • It is possible to process cucumber beds with a solution of boric acid. Extra root treatment helps to strengthen the underground and above-ground parts of the plant, as well as increases the number of ovaries. It is enough to dissolve 5 g of boric acid in 10 liters of water.

What do female and male inflorescences look like? It is easy to distinguish a male flower from a female inflorescence. Female inflorescence is determined by the cucumber on which the flower blossomed, and he has only one pistil. A male flower has five stamens.

How to deal with empty cucumbers, whether to remove, prevention

Even before planting seedlings in a permanent place, care must be taken to ensure that empty flowers do not appear more than female flowers.

  • Buy seeds only from a trusted manufacturer. Seeds suitable for sowing 3-4 years old. Plants grown from young seeds often produce barren flowers.
  • Be sure to select for planting only large and dense seeds. Treat with potassium permanganate or boric acid.
  • Popular practice advises, be sure to carry out the procedure of drying the selected seeds. In cucumber seeds contain a lot of protein and if you sow the seeds fresh, the plant will fatten, grow quickly, but not bear fruit. With prolonged heating (it is useful to hold the seeds around the battery for about 1.5 months), the protein loses its activity.

  • It is useful to treat seeds with solutions that enhance immunity and good growth (Novosil, Zircon, Ecosil). Those gardeners who watered their cucumbers with these means noted a high yield, early ripening and a reduced number of barren flowers.
  • Plant on land where there is enough sunlight.
  • To avoid male flowers in large quantities, you need to respect the distance when planting. The distance between seedlings should be at least 45 cm. Otherwise, foliage and lash will prevent air and light from reaching all parts of the plant.

  • Pustules on cucumbers are formed with improper feeding. Abundant application of nitrogen fertilizers leads to a lack of potassium and phosphorus. Therefore, you should alternate between different fertilizers. First, you can feed the infusion of chicken manure or mullein, and during fruiting it is useful to add superphosphate or wood ash.
  • Advice from the agronomist: “Female flowers mainly go on the side branches of the plant, therefore it is important to carry out the procedure of pinching the main stem in time. For many years we have been struggling with empty land in this way. ”
  • Harvest during the period of mass ripening of fruits, should be every other day. If they are left on the whips, they will quickly outgrow, and the ovary will lag behind in its growth and development.

If there are many barren flowers in cucumbers, and what is not known, fertilizers will help. To empty the flowers do not appear before the flowering period, you can feed the cucumbers with mullein or chicken droppings. During flowering, it is useful to water the beds with a mixture of potassium sulfate, superphosphate, mullein and wood ash.

High temperatures of air, more than 27 degrees, prevents the pollination of plants. What to do in this case? To save cucumber beds from the scorching sun, you need to make a canopy and be sure to mulch the soil. An additional layer of straw, chopped grass, peat, will keep moisture inside and protect the root system from drying out.

Adding an article to a new collection

If a large number of male flowers appear on your cucumbers, but you still cannot see female flowers, you should not despair. We will show you the cause of the problem and how to fix it.

Perhaps the easiest way to forget about the problem of empty flowers once and for all is to sow seeds. self-pollinating or self-fertile (parthenocarpic) varieties. The flowers of the first group have both stamens and pistil, therefore the very concept of barren flowers does not apply to them. The latter do not need pollination at all and produce fruit without seeds. We have already written in detail about such cucumbers.

However, if you “put” cucumbers with dioecious flowers in your garden, some care errors can lead to the appearance of a large number of barren flowers.

In no case do not tear off male flowers. Following our advice, you can accelerate the appearance of female flowers on plants. If by this time there are no empty flowers on cucumbers at all, it means that the female flowers with the ovary simply cannot be pollinated. After pollination, empty flowers always dry and fall down themselves.

Male (left) and female (right) cucumber flower

To distinguish female flowers from male ones is very simple. Male flowers grow on the legs (which is why they are called empty flowers), and female flowers always have a thickening in the form of small cucumbers.

Reason 1. Poor quality cucumber seeds

When buying ready-made seeds of a good producer, one can be more or less sure that they are of high-quality, healthy, prepared for sowing. Another thing is when you decide to collect the seeds of cucumbers you like on your own.

An inexperienced gardener may not suspect that far from all cucumbers are suitable for breeding. As a result, from the collected seeds can grow not at all what you expected.

The wrong form of a cucumber is a sure sign that the seeds cannot be collected from it.

Perhaps a large number of barren flowers on cucumbers (especially when coupled with an irregular shape of the fruit) suggests that the seed “donor” was itself a hybrid or perepylyl with a hybrid. Given that at home to control pollination, if possible, it is rather difficult, self-procurement of seeds is fraught with constant surprises.

Decision: To buy seeds of a proven agrofirm.

Reason 2. Sowing too young seed

The correct planting material for cucumber is seeds with a 4-year "aging" (in the extreme case, it may be 2-3 years). The fact is that the seeds collected last year are not yet ready for sowing. Plants grown from them, I will give a lot of barren flowers.

Decision: Warm up the seeds before sowing. To begin with, they are disinfected by soaking in 1% (pink) potassium permanganate solution for 20-30 minutes. After they are well dried and kept within a month near the central heating battery (the air temperature in this place should be between 25-28 ° C).

The accelerated (but also more risky) way is to calcine the seeds in the oven at 50-60 ° C for 2 hours. Before sowing, you can also soak the seeds in a solution of an immunomodulator (Novosil, Zircon, etc.), which will increase the yield of plants.

Seeds of hybrids should not be heated.

Reason 4. Heat

Unfortunately, the hot summer weather during the flowering of cucumbers can adversely affect the fertility of plants. The air temperature above 27 ° C "sterilizes" the pollen of male flowers of cucumbers, and the greens are not tied.

Decision: Reinforced watering. To reduce the risk of loss of the cucumber crop, watering, contrary to previous advice, should be carried out twice a day: in the morning and in the evening, when the sun is low.

Reason 5. Cold weather

Do not forget that this culture comes from their southern edges, and the cold does not benefit her. If the summer was abnormally cold, whether you like it or not, it will not be easy to get female flowers on cucumbers.

Decision: Suspend watering at air temperature below 15 ° С. As we said above, this will stimulate the early formation of female flowers.

Reason 6. Lack of lighting

Another common cause of the formation of barren flowers on cucumbers is the lack of sunlight.

6-8. This will stimulate the growth of the side lashes, on which female flowers are formed.

For a good harvest, cucumbers need a lot of sunlight.

Reason 7. Incorrect dressing.

If you overfed your cucumbers with nitrogen-containing fertilizers, they can begin to fatten, that is, to increase the green mass, not giving fruit. This is because in such “fed” conditions the plant simply does not need to take care of the offspring - it is comfortable enough with an excess of nitrogen.

Decision: Observe the dressing mode. For a good harvest, cucumbers must be fertilized with potassium and phosphorus. Before sowing seeds, it is good to introduce both organic and mineral fertilizers at the rate of 10-15 kg of rotten compost or manure, 20 g of superphosphate, potassium sulfate and urea, 10 g of potassium chloride per sq. M.

After sprouting, in phase 2 of these leaves, cucumbers are fed with nitrophosphate or nitroammophoska (1 tbsp per 1 l of warm water). With the beginning of flowering, nitrogen is eliminated from the dressings. Just for the season, you can feed the cucumbers 4 times.

Reason 8. Crop Thickness

If you planted cucumbers too tightly, do not be surprised at the large number of hollow flowers. If the plants in the garden closely, it affects their development: they grow slowly, and female flowers may not appear. In addition, even with the appearance of flowers with the ovary, it is early to sigh with relief - the thickening of the crops may interfere with pollination.

Decision: Compliance with the cucumber planting scheme (25 × 25 cm). If the plants are already planted in the ground, it remains only to "clear" the space between shoots. To do this, you need to pinch the main lash of seedlings. This will stop the excessive growth, and stimulate the appearance of female flowers.

Too much planting does not allow bees to get to the flowers

If there are female flowers on the plants, but you notice that the bees do not sit on them, you will have to pollinate cucumbers yourself. To do this in the morning, as soon as the flowers bloom, tear off the halo of the male flower and gently touch it to the stigma of the female flower. One female flower is best pollinated by two or three men.
