Home improvement for pigeons requires a platform away from busy streets and highways. This is due to the fact that pigeons are a rather shy and unequivocal bird. New dovecote should not be placed near barriers, tall trees, buildings, towers and other floor structures.

Dovecote should be in a quiet place, away from the slopes

The best option to make dovecote is the territory inside the attic. This is due to the fact that inside there is good ventilation and a dry microclimate. In addition, this sample allows you to quickly move to the roof, which is important for birds. New dovecote can be made in the following variations, each of which has its own pros and cons.

Hinged model. This option is economical and easy to manufacture, but is designed to keep a small number of pigeons.

The structure is a standard wooden box suspended on the roof of a building. Design features:

  • the notch is located from the front of the pigeon house,
  • it is intended for habitats of non-pedigree bird species,
  • the device is easy to do with your own hands from scrap materials,
  • does not properly protect the bird from the cold and predators.

Hanging dovecote does not protect pigeons from frost

A full-fledged dovecote at a cottage or in a private house may have a tower construction, which is usually made with round shapes, made of brick or wood. Tower house is mounted up to 4 meters high and consists of several floors. Inside the pigeon house, nests are settled down, which are separated by walls, and feeders and drinking bowls for birds are placed on the first floor.

The presented structure allows you to freely observe both the adult bird and the chicks. Although this house has many advantages, building it yourself is troublesome and expensive.

Regardless of the choice of the type of house, it is necessary to observe the following rules when building it:

  • Arranging dovecote begin with choosing a place away from high-rise buildings, tall trees and other structures that impede the flight of pigeons.
  • It is not necessary to build a house for birds near power lines and telephone communications.
  • Negative neighbors include neighbors dovecotes, pigsties, poultry houses, cesspools, and other structures that may contribute to feathered diseases.

Manufacturing material and dimensions

Wooden dovecote will require the equipment of the walls inside the building and carrying out putty work on the joints. As an option, sheathe the house with plywood sheets. The brick version also needs plastering of the ceiling and wall parts. Dovecote of metal sheathed inside with boards and plywood decor.

The main dimensions of the home for doves made by yourself are the following parameters:

  • useful habitat is at least 50 cc. on the cooing pair,
  • it is reasonable to create several departments that are separated by breed and age of the bird,
  • in each section no more than 10-15 pairs are placed inside.

In winter, birds of different sexes should be divided into separate sections. Separately, in the construction project, make a place for the equipment of feeding troughs, troughs and other devices. You also need to provide offices for the younger generation (up to 1 year). For a new pigeon house consisting of two sections, it would be appropriate to place the young generation and economic devices in one compartment, and the old pigeons in the second part.

When drafting a pigeon house, consider the following dimensions:

  • construction height - 2 meters,
  • dimensions of the entrance door (height / width - 1.6 / 0.6 m),
  • windows must be made in relation to the floor area in the proportion of 1/10,
  • summer sites are square-sized, with the size of 10/10, 20/20, 25/25 cm (the larger the breed, the larger the platform dimensions). For sporting pigeons, notches are located at a height of 1-1.5 m, for ornamental and meat breeds - 0.2-0.3 meters from the floor level.

Dovecote should not be below 2 meters

Knowledgeable pigeon owners make flybills with regulators. They are necessary for flyers and convenient in practice. It’s easy to do it yourself. To do this, it will be necessary to mount in the window a frame consisting of freely hanging rods made of solid wire. For convenience, the design is equipped with a correction limiter.

For sports pigeons, you can do it yourself with a special receiver. The function of the equipment is that after the competition, the bird flies into a mobile cage, from where it can be easily reached and the control ring replaced.

It is desirable that the new dovecote is equipped with two bays, one of which is equipped with a limiter, and the second serves as an outlet.

No less important is the placement of windows in the house for pigeons. Penetration of sunlight from the south or east favorably affects the growth and immunity of the bird. Keeping pets in winter requires warming inside the pigeon house, and ideally carrying electricity to the building.

In the dovecote must come the rays of the sun from the east and south

It is reasonable to build doors in the house for pigeons from 2 layers. The outer canvas is made of wood, the inner door is made of mesh or metal mesh framework. In the summer, leave the first door in the open position, which will contribute to sufficient lighting and ventilation of the new pigeon house. The last factor plays an important role for the health of feathered pets, therefore at a height of 150-200 mm from the floor it is reasonable to make a hole for air flow, and under the ceiling - a hood.

All vents in the cold season must be blocked in order to avoid drafts. Old dovecote requires periodic disinfection and sanitization. Floors in the building should be made of tightly fitted boards. For decorative and meat birds in the poultry house, an open-air cage should be arranged, which will help the bird to get used to the new dwelling more quickly. Each bird should have its own habitat space and nest creation. Old dovecote requires periodic verification of this in the event of an egg-bearing period and hatching chicks.

House arrangement is carried out in the following way:

  • Perches are mounted from bars with a width of 30-40 mm, which are suspended 300-400 mm from the ceiling.
  • For breeding breeds, shelves are made from boards with a length of 700-800 mm, width of 300-400 mm. Alternatively, you can install boxes of similar size, fastened one above the other.
  • For birds with strong plumage or weak wings, you need to adapt to perches bump, having dimensions of 300-400 mm wide and up to 250 mm thick.
  • The internal structure of the pigeon house is desirable to make collapsible, which will facilitate maintenance and cleaning.

Nests and feeders

Nesting sites are made in the form of rectangular boxes, in size, in the ratio of bird weight. The bottom of the nest is permissible to make of plywood, and the sidewall - of the rails. The bottom is made with a small depression, height 60-70 mm, long - 200-250 mm. Cracks and defects appearing with time on the nest should be puttied.

New dovecote is equipped with special feeders and drinkers for pets. Feed of mineral origin is forbidden to combine with grain. Given the breed and the number of individuals, determine the number of feeders. Drinkers should be periodically cleaned and contain only clean water. Some types of equipment for feeding and watering pigeons have an automatic mode that prevents pollution and greatly facilitates the existence of both the bird and its owner.

Inside the pigeon house, in addition to nests, there should be feeders and drinkers

Vacuum drinkers are not suitable for use in the winter, as the water in them may freeze. With your own hands, it is possible to make a device out of empty cans with a capacity of 400 and 800 g. Three cuts are made at the side of a large container, the sharp edges are turned or folded. Water is poured into the smaller element, covering it from above with a second tin.

Old dovecote with such drinkers can be used all year round, they should be installed on special pallets, in order to avoid dampness in the dovecote.

Feathery pets are constantly needed in the diet green food. To provide pigeons with proper nutrition, it is necessary to grow fresh oats and barley separately in pots or boxes. For the storage of mineral feed using bags, boxes or buckets. Packaging must be dry and protected from mice and rats. Pigeons periodically need bathing. For these purposes, you can equip your own special baths in the form of baking sheets with sides.

During the period of frost, the floor in the pigeon house must be insulated with hay, straw or sawdust. At least once a month, the litter needs to be changed.

Periodic cleaning and disinfection of pigeon house is key to bird health. General cleaning in the house is carried out weekly, not forgetting the daily care. The process includes the removal of all devices from the house for pigeons, along with the bird. They carry out wet cleaning of the walls, floor, ceiling, after cleaning the feeders, perches and drinking bowls.

It should be noted that the answer to the question: how to build a pigeon house independently, is quite simple. Make it easy, with a minimum set of tools, desire and patience. The structure can serve not only as a home for the bird and an outlet for its owner, but also to become a real decoration of the courtyard.
