Grapes - one of the most ancient berries that have not lost their popularity to this day. Viticulture is not an easy task. Nevertheless, many gardeners are trying to grow these berries on their land to enjoy their wonderful taste. And, although grapes are considered a heat-loving plant, there are varieties that grow well in different climatic conditions and bring a good harvest. These include Victoria - a wonderful variety that gives a lot of sweet pink fruits with a rich taste and excellent aroma.

Description of the variety, characteristic with a photo

Victoria grapes were bred by Russian breeders. One of the main tasks at the same time was to create a variety that can tolerate frost and bad weather well. Scientists have succeeded. The plant was not only sustainable, but also skoroplodny. The breeders laid European, Amur varieties as the basis for their creation. As a result, we have berries that begin to ripen in almost 2-3 years after the bushes have been planted or grafted.

Victoria is valued not only for its taste. One of the main advantages of the variety is the size of the grapes. One can reach more than 0.5 kg in weight. The berries are also large, have a beautiful color. The clusters have a conical shape, the berries are moderately compacted, not too pressed to each other.

Berries reach almost 3 cm in length, weigh an average of 6-7 g. Their shape is oblong, ovate. The skin of the grape has an interesting shade - red-raspberry. On top there is a characteristic matte coating.

Many like the wonderful taste of the Victoria variety, thanks in part to the pulp. The fact is that it is rather dense, fleshy, juicy. Ripening completely, the berries acquire an incomparable nutmeg flavor.

As for the plant itself, it bears fruit densely, about 80% of shoots produce fruits. This indicates a remarkable yield, but, at the same time, the overloading of the bushes. The vegetation of the plant lasts from 115 to 120 days. Therefore, with the onset of mid-late August, the first tasty ripe clusters of Victoria appear. At the end of the summer, as a rule, a full harvest is carried out.

Advantages and disadvantages

Variety Victoria has a lot of advantages. To begin with, even on a small scale of cultivation, it gives a good harvest. This grape is perfect for growing in small summer cottages. It will be possible to eat the harvested harvest yourself and treat the guests, and even prepare for the winter. If it is more serious to grow, this variety will go well for sale. Nevertheless, it is worth knowing that large yields and fruits of good quality are not the only positive characteristics of the described variety. It is important to know about its other merits.

  • Grape cuttings are characterized by remarkable survival.
  • They have the ability to adapt well.
  • The shoots of the plants ripen perfectly, most of them give fruit.
  • The variety is resistant not only to cold weather, but also to diseases. In most cases, the plant does not have to be treated, it is enough protective measures in the form of spraying bushes.
  • Quality care directly affects the yield of the plant. If you look after him well and adhere to all agrotechnical norms, then you can significantly improve the quality and size of the crop.
  • Victoria with great success can be grown in different regions. Even if in winter the frost exceeds 20 ° C, the vine is not damaged. If there is a possibility of even greater frosts, it is important to cover the bush in order to preserve its health.

Of course, Victoria has her shortcomings, which is also important to remember. One of the main things is that the flowers of the plant are mostly female. This quality leads to undesirable consequences - the plant is poorly pollinated, constantly fruit pea occurs. This requires gardeners to plant nearby other varieties, which coincide with the flowering period with Victoria.

Another drawback is the overload of the bush. It would seem, because it is great when the plant gives a great harvest. Yes, but large loads have a bad effect on the plant itself, and on subsequent crops, too. The clusters become smaller over time, the berries begin to grow smaller.

Based on this, the following drawback can be called - the need to rationalize the yield of Victoria. In order not to damage the bushes and maintain their healthy fruiting, it is necessary to ration the number of fruits, starting as early as the flowering period and before maturation. Catching crops sometimes have to be removed completely.

The sweet taste of grapes caused another of its shortcomings. Saharas attract insects, namely - wasps. Defeat by these dangerous creatures can harm both the landlord and the crop itself.

Note! To the wasps do not spoil the berries, they can put special traps. One option is a solution of sugar or honey with the addition of chlorophos (0.5%). It is poured into a container and placed near the vineyard.

Another option is to lay out fruit near the plant that has already become overripe. They are also treated with insecticides. Wasps can be removed by burning their nests, but this must be done with great care.

Planting and care

Victoria grapes can be grown in two ways. The first one is planting from a cutting. The main advantage of this method is a good bush: clean, without possible diseases and pests. The second method is grafting on an adult stock. In this case, too, has its advantages, namely - the bush will be more resilient, strong and productive. In addition, it will grow faster.

Victoria can be planted in the autumn and spring periods. Spring landing takes place from the end of March to the beginning of July. But in the autumn it is better to handle this matter until mid-October. Since grapes are a heat-loving culture, it is important for them to choose an appropriate place. The site should be protected from drafts and saturated with sunlight. The soil must be fertile. It is possible to improve the quality of the land with mineral or organic fertilizers. But it is recommended to bring them in advance - about 1-2 years before planting grapes.

An important point of good survival of grapes - the choice of cuttings.

A quality plant should have white roots and a green cut.

10-30 days before landing Victoria is preparing a place. The pit should be 1 m deep and slightly less in width, approximately 80 cm. Drainage — gravel (5 cm) and then the ground (10 cm) should be laid on the bottom. After that, you need to pour into the hole about 2 buckets of humus, and then - fertile soil. Further, all this is mixed and left for some time.

The seedling is lowered into the pit at the level of the radical neck, is filled up, compacted, but not much. It must be poured with plenty of water - up to 3 buckets. The soil near the grapes is recommended to mulch. It is also important to put a footing that supports the young plant.

To plant grapes of this variety is recommended for varieties more durable and strong. It is necessary to choose a cutting with 2-3 eyes, it is important to cut the lower part in the form of a wedge, and fill the top with paraffin. For the stock is taken stump from the old grape bush. The place is well cleaned, it should become smooth. Further, a split is made in the center, and the cutting must be put into it. It is pre-lubricated with clay, and the stock is watered and mulched. The stock has a cloth or strong rope.

Care of a grade Victoria consists of several components.

  • The first is watering. It should be sufficient and timely.
  • The second is fertilizer. Experts recommend making mineral and organic supplements in early spring. After that, the grapes are watered. Also feeding is made during the formation of the ovary and during the ripening of the berries, when they change color.
  • The third is mulching. For it use moss, sawdust and only after moistening.
  • Formation. The bush is cut in the fall, giving it a fan shape. In the spring it is treated against diseases and pests.
  • In the autumn the grapes are harboring, putting them first in a trench.

Grape Victoria: video

This year, amid rainy sores, Victoria makes me happy. Nevertheless, this variety has positive advantages: high frost resistance and disease resistance. As for wasps, the problem is solved - bags for bunches have long been waiting in the wings. In addition, despite the rains, the bush showed high yields and good pollination, without peas.

Victoria is a good variety, tasty, but I have not picked a single brush on my site for 8 years. The top of the tassel starts to sing and immediately the wasps are still green down as they mature, they feast. Traps do not help. Arkady is growing nearby and they don’t touch her until they get rid of Victoria. Tried to hide in the bags, but begins to wander and even more attracted wasps. I had to root out, although it is a pity.

Victoria is quite a decent form of grapes. At FZHTTs, pollination of three seasons went well. It is very resistant to diseases, it begins to ripen early. Fully ripe berries of excellent nutmeg taste (the favorite of my women). The only serious drawback - very loved by wasps. Begin to damage at the very beginning of ripening. Be sure to hide the hrones from the wasps - otherwise it will not have time to fully mature, they will eat them. With heavy rains, the crackling of individual berries is noticed. The vine matures perfectly. For yourself to keep a bush or two is quite possible.

Victoria grapes are one of the recommended grapes for growing in small areas, including as a first variety for a summer resident taking the first steps in such an interesting business. However, with some drawbacks, it does not find application in industrial viticulture. With proper care, it gives excellent harvests of tasty berries, but it requires a lot of effort for this.
