Application of thorns

Turn (it is a blackthorn) is a plant representative of the Rosaceae family. It is presented mainly by a small shrub, at least - a tree. The height of the sloe can reach 8 m. There are thorns on the branches. Leaves of irregular shape - either elliptical or ovate, but inverse. Shrub flowers are always small and usually white. Flowering time - the end of April - the first half of May. The turn is fruitful with small odnokostiankami, the color of which is dark purple. On top of the fruit there is a barely noticeable wax coating.

Mostly grows the turn in the territory of Western Europe, in the Mediterranean countries. In our country - in western Siberia, as well as in the Caucasus.

Thorns are rich in glucose and fructose (up to 9.0%), acids (up to 3.0%). They taste sour. Mature late - in the middle of autumn. The turn easily tolerates even the most severe winters, as well as droughts. Thanks to crossing with home plum, the turn grows in the Volga region, and it is very abundant and large fruits.

The turn is an excellent plant honey plant. Up to 30 kg of ready-to-eat fruits can be collected from 1 ha, which is a very high productivity. Before eating, it is advisable to freeze and thaw, or let it lie for a few days in a place protected from the sun at room temperature.

Preparation and storage of thorns

Thorns begin to ripen in early autumn, but they are harvested in the second decade of October. Fresh fruits are very unpleasant to taste due to the large amount of tannins in them. The most pleasant time of gathering fruits are the first frosts. Due to the effects of low temperatures tannins are destroyed, and the berries become sour-sweet. After collecting the fruits, it is advisable to dry them in the first week. This can be done both in natural conditions in the open air, but in warm weather, or in stoves at a very low temperature.

Collection of shrub flowers should be carried out during budding. As a rule, this is the beginning or middle of August. It is better to collect the leaves during the flowering period - this is June-July. It is advisable to collect the young shoots of the turn at the end of May, and they should be dried in an open and preferably ventilated area. It is necessary to dig up the roots of thorns in September-October and dry them in air or in a furnace.

All components of the considered shrub can be stored for 1 year, except for the roots. Their shelf life lasts 3 years. It is advisable to store all dried ingredients at room temperature in a place protected from the sun. This is best done in glass jars or fabric bags.
