Traditional garden wooden paths in the country - it is natural, stylish and durable. In addition, such paths can be made even without the involvement of specialists. Before starting work, familiarize yourself with the device and technology of laying tracks from wooden cuts, boards, pallets and modern decking. In some ways, their construction is similar, but each wood material has its own characteristics.
Adding an article to a new collection
A wooden saw is the easiest and cheapest material from which to make a wonderful path in the country. Whether she will dangle among flower beds or go straight to a cozy resting corner, you decide. And we will tell you how to make it according to the rules and with the least labor costs.
Most time is spent preparing saw cuts. Usually the paths are made from old wood growing on the site, or remnants of building materials. In any case, it is desirable that it be solid wood varieties. Aspen is ideal, larch and acacia are durable, pine and spruce serve well.
It is important to adhere to this rule: first dry and then cut the logs, otherwise they will crack. Calculate the diameter and thickness (height) of the cuts depending on the expected load. At the same time, paving from round timbers of different diameters looks especially interesting and also perfectly solves the problem with gaps.
There are no irregular stumps for the cuts track, all are suitable
To make cuts less slippery in wet weather, after cutting it is not necessary to grind the cuts.
Sawed billets clear of bark, under which bugs can be got. Then cover the ends and sides with anti-rot agents. Saturate well, otherwise a fungus will form, and after the rain the path will become slippery. As a defense, you can choose a special antiseptic or use the materials at hand. For example, soak the wood with a solution of copper sulfate (20%): pour it into a large container and lower the saw cut for 2-3 days, then dry it in the shade.
"Bathing" in drying oil
Under the influence of vitriol, the tree quickly darkens. However, its natural shade retains when processing linseed oil. On a campfire in a large iron tank, bring it to a boil, let it cool slightly and apply with a brush to the saw cuts from all sides. It is more convenient to saturate the blanks if you put them on top of each other.
Cutting with sawdust must necessarily
While the cuts are soaked with linseed oil, prepare a "bed" for them. Clean the selected place from weeds and mark the boundaries of the track with the help of pegs, pulling the rope between them. If you dig a groove half way down a spade bayonet, you will need too much sand. A depth of 10-12 cm is sufficient for it.
Prepare a ditch for laying hemp in advance
Pour the drainage gravel-sand layer into the ditch, level it, pour it heavily and tamp it down. Moisten the sand so that it lays more tightly and evenly. Under the drainage create a slope so that the water does not linger on the track.
We put cuts
After the gravel-sand layer dries, lay the cuts, placing them tightly in accordance with the size. Check the construction level, so that all sections lie in the same plane, and, if necessary, besiege them with a sledgehammer. Cover the gaps with sand, which prevents the growth of weeds and securely fixes the cuts, then sweep the cover so that the gaps are completely filled with sand and it lies at the level of the dies.
The cuts track is ready
To completely seal the charge, pour plenty of water from the watering can several times with a break of 1-2 hours. The next day you can walk along the path.
That's all the wisdom! As you can see, you can build a pretty walkway from woody cuts on your own, most importantly, be patient and have the necessary material.
Pros and cons of the path of the cuts
Before choosing cuts as a material for covering tracks, you should familiarize yourself with all the advantages and disadvantages of wood. Reliable information will help to avoid installation errors, and not be disappointed with unpleasant surprises during the operation of the wood flooring.
Pros tracks from saws:
• an opportunity to carry out installation personally thanks to simple technology,
• arrangement of the tracks with the selected material takes little time and does not require large labor costs,
• the original design of the wood covering, which is due to the beautiful natural pattern of the wood cut,
• compatibility of wood cover with any landscape area,
• the material is amenable to restoration, in case of severe damage the fragment can be easily replaced with a new saw,
• used logs can be used later as mulch or a component for a compost pit,
• during precipitation, the coating does not retain moisture on the surface, which ensures comfortable movement around the site even during bad weather.
No less important are the disadvantages of the tree. Among the main ones:
• susceptibility to decay,
• the need for regular processing and restoration of the protective layer,
• wood is sensitive to temperature extremes.
It is also worth adding that after the precipitation the track becomes slippery. But this disadvantage can be prevented if special compositions are used in the processing of the coating.
The track from the wood cuts with their own hands
For the path of saw cuts, it is better to choose hardwood, this will extend the life of the coating. Oak logging will stand in the ground for more than 10 years, pine logs will last a little less - about 7 years. But larch is considered the favorite, the path will retain a presentable appearance and functionality for more than 25 years. In fact, the household uses more often the materials that are at hand, so it is important to give preference to the material without signs of decay.
Before starting the installation, prepare saw cuts. To do this, the log is cut into individual fragments. The height of the workpieces is from 15 to 25 cm, depending on the diameter of the log (the larger it is, the higher the cut should be).
To keep the material for a long time its structure, you need to get rid of the bark. It is also recommended to abandon the use of blanks with cracks, with mechanical stress and under the influence of atmospheric factors, the deformation will increase.
Peeled saws are treated with an antiseptic to increase resistance to moisture and fungus. Do not forget about waterproofing. For this, the lower parts of the logs are covered with bitumen. You should grab the lower circle and the part of the height that will be buried in the trench. Preparatory work is completed with a protective coating (paint, varnish).
Installation is performed in the following sequence:
• mark on the border of the track (the recommended width is at least 35-40 cm),
• place the pegs at the indicated points and pull the twine over them,
• dig a trench with a depth of saw cuts plus 5–15 cm (the increase depends on the type of soil and the topography of the plot),
• lay the bottom of the pit with geotextile,
• fill the trench with sand (layer thickness 2-3 cm),
• add a layer of gravel or rubble (2.5-5 cm) for drainage,
• compact the sand-gravel cushion with a tamper (but do not overdo it in this case, so as not to break through the geofabric), for convenience, the sand can be moistened,
• level the bedding with a building level,
• install a curb if such a track element is envisaged by the plan,
• lay out cuts on the developed design,
• fill the intervals between the saws with sand or sifting (can be ground mixed with seeds of short grass or meadow flowers).
To preserve the natural attractiveness of wood cuts, it is necessary to provide regular maintenance. For these purposes, use special protective coatings, linseed oil or paint (alkyd, latex, etc.).
Preventive measures are held at least 1 time per year. The wooden surface must first be properly cleaned with a metal scraper, and then treated with an antiseptic. Dry cuts are painted with paint or other protective coating in one layer. It is important to consider that the end faces must maintain roughness, this will prevent the formation of a slip effect in rainy weather or at sub-zero temperatures.
Track From wood cuts is the ideal solution in the presence of free raw materials. We will have to spend a little time and money on preparing the fragments for coating and their processing. The unique pattern of the tree rings will bring freshness and originality to any exterior, because natural motifs are more relevant now than ever.
Stages of the construction of garden paths of cuts
There are a lot of sawn timber from which you can lay paths in the garden or in a flower garden near a country house, these are boards, boards, timber or decking (parquet), although this is not solid wood, and the composite is sawdust with plastic (wood laminate). But the most attractive material, of course, will be the log cuts, where the structure and tree rings are clearly visible. Below you will find step-by-step instructions on the production of fragments and their installation.
For the implementation of this plan will need a number of materials and tools, it is:
- Lumber - logs for cutting into hemp.
- Waterproofing - thick polyethylene, but geotextiles are better.
- Bulk building materials - pebbles, gravel (crushed stone), screenings, sand.
- Level - preferably from a meter or more.
- Cutting tool - chainsaw.
- Auxiliary tools - rubber or wooden large mallet, bucket, bayonet and shovel, brushes.
Stage №1 - preparation and processing of hemp
Hemp Chainsaw Procurement
The project should start with the preparation of the desired amount of material, therefore, before marking all the paths you need to measure their total length and width to calculate the area of coverage. This is very easy to do using the formula S = length * b width and then the average area of the cut S = π * r2, after which S tracks / S cut = x pieces - all that remains is to substitute the numerical values. In order to find the average radius (r) of the cut, you need to measure the diameter (D) of the largest and smallest section of the logs, put them together, and then divide them into two. The resulting diameter is also divided by two and we get the average radius. For example, we take two diameters of ø0.4 + ø0.25 = 0.65 and divide by two: 0.65 / 2 = 0.325, which means D average = 0.325 m, and radius r = 0.325 / 2 = 0.1625 m, which means , S = πr2 = 3.14 * 0.162 = 0.5024 m2 or rounded square floor.
For the manufacture of blanks, it is desirable to choose hardwoods, which will last for a relatively long time, for example:
- pine - 7 years
- hornbeam - 10 years,
- oak tree - 10 years
- larch - 25 years or more.
Bark must be removed
In addition to accounting for wood species, you need to pay attention to its condition, for example, large longitudinal cracks and / or damage by mold, rot, bugs will not contribute to an increase in the operational life. When you pick up suitable logs, cut them into blocks of 15-20 cm, but it is advisable to stick to the same size (shorter hemp does not adhere well during installation). If desired, you can also polish saw cuts, although this is not necessary.
Soak the cut in antiseptic
The ends of the cuts can be painted in any color you like.
When you have cut the right amount of hemp, remove the bark from them - there may be various pests such as tree beetles, bark beetles, shashlii, etc. After cleaning, the wood should be protected from moisture and the best drug in this case is boiled oil drying oil (natural, combined Oksol "). But working with boiling water, especially with oil, is quite dangerous, so many people prefer various antiseptics to oil drying, they also resist rotting and protect against pests.
Painted saw cuts after drying are processed by mining or bitumen
Impregnation and paint must dry
After drying the linseed oil or antiseptic, (it may take up to 2 days), treat the lower part of hemp with bitumen, as in the photo above. For this purpose, the best suitable solid construction bitumen, commonly known as resin, packaged in bags. The resin is broken into pieces and melted on a fire (campfire) in any metal container. The processed part of the chock will dry in a few hours, and the cut will be ready for installation. You can also soak the hemp in the development of oil, only it does not dry out anymore - and you will have to install them.
Stage №2 - marking of garden paths
Marking of garden paths
Now about the size. In the case when the garden path made of wood cuts, made by hand, is designed for one person, then 35-40 cm wide will be enough. But in order that there it was possible to walk together hand in hand, the comfortable width will increase to 100-120 cm, although such parameters are very rare.
It is very important to determine the route of all the paths that should interconnect all the buildings and recreation areas (benches, gazebos, flower beds, etc.). Lines of laying, as a rule, have turns, zigzags and curves. To display them on the surface, metal or wooden pegs are hammered into the ground, along which they stretch a nylon thread for reference. A similar operation is performed on the other side of the track, indicating its width.
Stage 3 - preparation of the foundation on the ground
Ground preparation on the ground
Now you need to separately cut the turf - it can be used for landscaping the site in another place, but if you do not need it, then, of course, you can simply dig it up. So, using landmarks marked with threads, we are digging a trench for half a bayonet, not counting turf, but you must also take into account the length of the stumps - you will understand this in the process of describing the working steps. Try to keep the sides of the grooves flat and strictly vertical - this is easy to achieve with a bayonet spade.
Laying waterproofing film
In order to protect the wood from groundwater, waterproofing is covered at the bottom of the excavated trench and it is best if it is geotextile. But, as a budget option, you can also use dense polyethylene, it is 150-200 microns (microns). If the seller does not know the thickness of the material, then you can focus on its suitability for the device greenhouses and greenhouses. When you plan to install a wooden curb (hemp, loose along logs, thick boards, stones, etc.), the waterproofing should be wrapped on the walls of the trench or even slightly higher (the excess will be cut off).
Above the waterproofing film poured a pillow of sand mixed with gravel or rubble (can be screened without sand) in height from 2.5 to 5 cm and leveled by a rule under the level. This layer will absorb the water that falls between the chumps on the bottom of the trench. So what does it do? Everything is simple and logical - moisture goes down under the influence of gravity, but does not linger at the base of the chocks, penetrates into the absorbing layer and after a while disperses on the sides into the ground, and part of it evaporates.
Stage №4 - installation of hemp borders
Installation of hemp borders
In this case, a hemp border was chosen, although you can frame the path with other material, as long as it is combined with the cuts and the exterior as a whole. But in the event that you still decide to make it with stumps, then choose the thinnest of the cut blanks, but it is desirable that they all be about the same diameter.
To make the curb of the selected cuts, you need to tightly put them in a vertical position on each side of the trench, as shown in the top photo. Waterproofing on the wall will protect them from ground moisture, and sand and gravel cushion from water that accumulates during precipitation. The height of the wood block above the ground after its laying should be about 3-4 cm.
Stage №5 - we pour another pillow
The second pillow consists of one sand.
On top of the sand-gravel layer, another pillow from one sand, 5-10 cm in height, is poured - the longer the hemp, the thinner the pillow. If you know what a semi-dry screed for paving slabs is and how it is made on the street, then this backfill is almost identical, only made from sand, and not from sifting and cement. Be sure to level the sand rule and level horizontally - this will facilitate the installation of saw cuts in the garden.
I want to make a small digression. The second pillow can be filled before the curb is installed and then the edging will be at the same height as the rest of the stumps. There are no regulations or clear instructions, as such sidewalks are not mentioned in any GOST or SNiP, therefore, TU (technical conditions), as such, does not exist here and everything depends on the installer’s imagination and desires.
Stage # 6 - stacking wood cuts
Between cuts, you can leave gaps or customize them close to each other.
At this stage, you need to place all the cuts in the excavated trench so that they are 3-4 cm above the lawn. The order or arrangement of the churbak has absolutely no meaning - now the main thing is to create stability, and between the cuts you can leave gaps or adjust them close to each other.
Hemp slaughtered in the sand with a rubber mallet
If you have nowhere to take a mallet, then, of course, use a hammer, just hammer the cuts through the gasket (a piece of board, bar or rail). Constantly level the surface of installed fragments with a building level.
Stage number 7 - the final stage of the installation of hemp and design clearance track
The space left between the stumps is filled with sand, sifting or fertile grass soil.
Between cuts of logs, in any case, there will be space, even if you stack them very tightly - this is a feature of the round timber. Cavities should be filled with loose building materials such as sand, granite sifting or rubble, after which it is necessary to tamp it, otherwise it will drain under the influence of atmospheric precipitation.
Ways of registration: 1) multi-colored ends, 2) grass between the saws, 3) large gravel between the saws
Let us turn to the final touch of the garden path device from the sawn wood, which we have already done with our own hands. The selection of photos at the top shows three design options, although in fact there are many more, but this already depends on your imagination.
The gaps between the stumps here can be filled with sand or granite screenings. But the highlight, as you can see, lies in the multi-colored ends of the cuts - for this purpose water-repellent paints are used. Such a design of the path at the playground is just a gift for a child.
The second option provides for stunted (lawn) grass. To do this, after filling in the cavity of sand or screening leave 4-5 cm to the surface of the ends, ram and fill the remaining amount of fertile soil mixed with seeds
Here, coarse gravel is poured between the stumps, as the distance allows it. But in such cases sometimes they go the other way - instead of gravel, colored crushed stone is poured, which looks very beautiful and original.
Below is a video tutorial on how to assemble a track from log cuts:
Video: Care of a garden path from tree cuts
It is necessary to take care of the garden path from woody cuts, yes, it is to take care of it, otherwise it may turn into a roof that is laid through a bog — trampled and dirty. At the ends of stumps, dirt will collect, and it will appear there even if you very rarely use this route or do not go there at all - there is always dust on the street. Therefore, at least once a month, sweep the garden paths with a brush, and, if necessary, wash them with running water from a hose.
In the case of the appearance of pieces of dirt (even animals can leave it), it is better to use a scraper, that is, an ordinary metal spatula with a blade cut to 3–4 cm. It is undesirable to use a metal brush, as it will spoil the texture of the cut.
Once a year or once every few years (depending on the intensity of movement in the garden), saw cuts should be covered with an antiseptic or water-repellent paint. As a rule, these are acrylic or latex compositions of paintwork materials for exterior work - they cost more than usual, but the operational resource fully justifies the money spent.
Pros and cons
Original design: cuts, ornamental plants and colored crushed stone
Positive feedback from optimists:
- the device of such tracks is inexpensive,
- speed and ease of installation,
- you don't need to hire someone to work
- looks natural
- endless possibilities for design,
- You can use used logs after disassembling any structures.
- the tree will rot over time
- with changes in temperature and humidity of air hemp will crack,
- need regular care.
You can compare the opinions of optimists and skeptics - this will help make your choice. But before making a final decision, watch this video:

Paths from wood cuts - the stages of construction
Ordinary stumps or cuts of a tree turn out nice winding paths. If you are interested in this idea and you decide to make a garden path from the wood cuts with your own hands in the garden or in the country, you need to choose the right material and deal with the method of installation.
The device paths from round timber
The device of a garden path from wooden cuts reminds a stone blocks. Instead of stones lay flat wooden dies of the same height. In order to make the path of the cuts of the tree as dense as possible, they use both large saw cuts and small diameter hemp, for example, from large branches. They are convenient to fill the space between the main elements.
If we are talking about an ornamental path that will serve not so much as a path as a decoration of a garden, you can get by with a narrow aisle one element wide. Such a path will only chart the direction. The technology in this case is much simpler. Prepared hemp is laid directly into the ground, allowed free space between them.
Material preparation and processing
Tree preparation is an extremely important step. Poorly picked up and untreated wood will very soon become worthless, and the path of the tree rings in the country house will have to be redone. The first step is to determine the type of wood. Suitable:
In principle, you can use any raw material that is available. The difference between hardwood (larch, beech, oak) and other species is in service life. On longevity larch out of competition. You can count on 25 years of operation, while pine will last 5-7 years.
The tree should be dry, without traces of pests. Logs need to dissolve into dies of the same height. The optimal size is 15 cm. For convenience, you can use a template. If you are doing the work yourself, make sure that the saw is made strictly perpendicular to the log.
When all the "pancakes" are cut, sort them by size. Cracked specimens should be removed immediately. Clean all ringlets from the bark. Next, you need to choose what to process the wood cuts for tracks to protect them from rotting and destruction.
Elementary method - processing of linseed oil. Dry oil is brought to a boil and one dip in each hot oil. The boiling substance seals the pores of the wood and prevents the ingress of moisture - the first enemy of wooden products. Disadvantages of this method: long and dangerous. Hot drying oil can be burned.
The option is more expensive, but much more practical - special compositions. You can handle the tree with antifungal agent with your own hands with a brush or spray gun. After prophylactic treatment, the wood should dry.
If you do not like the natural color of wood, the garden path can be aged out. Painting logs of copper sulfate will give them a dark, noble shade. Then the lower part of the dies (as a rule, the saw cuts have a more attractive side up) are treated with hot bitumen and allowed to dry.
Foundation preparation for paving
When all the material is prepared and sorted, you can proceed directly to the device cottage or garden paths. Before laying the path from the wood cuts, carry out preparatory and earthworks:
- Mark the future path in the garden.
- Remove the top layer of soil.
- Dig a trench.
- Arrange waterproofing.
- Prepare the foundation.
When you have planned how the country path will be placed from the wood cuts, transfer its image to the terrain - with the help of pegs and thread, make a marking. Do not forget that not always the passes of a complex intricate form will be convenient. After the markup, try to walk along the garden path and make sure that it is sufficiently functional and planned correctly.
Now you can safely take up the shovel. The trench should not be too deep. Add to the height of the dice 10 cm - this depth will be optimal. Further act as:
- Level the bottom.
- In a trench lay waterproofing layer. Some use a film, roofing material, but it is better to take geotextiles in such cases. This material does not allow water stagnation and weed germination.
- On the waterproofing, pour a layer of gravel - this is drainage. It is needed for quick drainage of water. The layer of gravel should be 10 cm thick. It is tamped down and covered with sand. 5-10 cm of sand is enough.
- To better tamp and level the base under the garden path of hemp with his own hands, it should be wetted. When wet, sand is tamped by hand.
Laying wooden saw cuts
The preparatory stage is completed, you can start laying. If the base is well prepared, it will not be difficult. You will need this tool:
- building level,
- hand tamper.
Laying can be carried out in compliance with any pattern or performed in any order. Logs are placed on a sandy pillow, then they need to be tamped a little and set on a level. Sand or crushed stone fall asleep in the gaps. Top seams can be sealed with other material. Suitable mulch, sawdust, pebbles, moss.
Here are some simple tips that will tell you how to properly lay out a path from the tree cuts with your own hands:
- Start with the big items. Spread evenly the largest circles along the entire length of the trail, then stack the middle ones. Small pancakes from the branches are ideal for filling the voids between the elements.
- Use curbs. The fence will make the contour clearer and neater, the sand from the joints will be less spread around the site. Curbs are set on a layer of gravel and sprinkled with sand.
- If the cuts are not placed too close, and the seams are filled with earth, in spring and summer the path will fit organically into the lawn and look very natural.
