Which roses are best dried?

Only fresh cut roses are suitable for drying. At the flowers standing in a vase some time, process of withering begins.

Roses should be cut off in dry weather so that they do not get a drop of moisture.

It is best to keep the shape of flowers with dense petals. It is also not necessary to use fully blooming buds, because after the flower dries, the petals will disintegrate.

Dried roses at home so that they do not lose their shape, in two ways: hanging them on a rope or pouring sand.

Dry roses on a rope

Roses to sort, trim the stems to the desired length, or simply trim the tips. Bottom leaves are also cut off, but without fanaticism. In a dry room, in which sunlight does not fall, pull the rope. Darkness is imperative, because from the sun the flowers will become fragile, darken, twist and disintegrate.

Tie the stem of each rose with a rope. It is impossible to tie flowers in a bouquet - in this form they will not get enough air and will start to rot.

At the same distance to tie up the roses so that they do not touch each other. Dried flowers will be ready in two weeks. If in the process of drying the rose has changed a little, it needs to be “painted” with nail polish.

Dry roses in the sand

For this method, you need a deep box made of cardboard or a wooden box. Prepare roses in the same way as when drying on a rope.

Next, prepare the sand - to ignite it in the oven or fry in a pan and sift through a sieve. Suitable river sand or special quartz sand for chinchillas, which is sold in pet stores.

Pour the sand into the box or box with a layer of 5-7 cm, then insert the rose with the flower up (as in a vase) and gently fill it with sand. In this case, the flower should be strictly vertically.

Box close for 2-3 weeks and put in a dry dark room. At the expiration of this period, make small holes at the bottom of the container so that the sand pours out on its own. It is impossible to dig out roses from the sand on your own, so as not to damage the petals.

How roses florists dry

However, at home, this method is best not to apply, because the improper use of powder will lead to the complete destruction of roses.

However, any, even the most beautiful rose, will fade sooner or later. The uniqueness of a rose among other flowers is that even faded, it is inexpressibly beautiful.

However, not all roses retain their proper shape with normal wilting. Agree, bent dried buds with deformed petals can not serve as an interior decoration. If you like interior solutions using bouquets of dried flowers, you should dry the rose correctly right from the start.

To preserve the shape of the bud, the rose should be suspended upside down so that the petals are looking down. Screw the wire to the coat hanger. Do the same with other roses for drying. Leave some space between the roses on the coat hanger to allow air to the petals. When the hanger is formed, place it in a dark, dry place, such as a closet or closet.

Sand Drying

To dry the roses in the second way you need white sand. The complexity of this method is slightly higher than with the usual suspension, but the flowers dried in this way have an incredibly beautiful shape. To get started, choose a rose at the time of its best flowering, blot from moisture. Cut the stem to an inch, insert the wire into it.

Then place the rose in a deep box in a normal, not upside-down position, hold it vertically and fall asleep with sand. When you reach the bud, proceed with caution. Pour sand between all the petals, forming a bud. After 1-3 weeks, start gently pour the sand out of the box, freeing the rose. The resulting dried flowers can be used for the preparation of bouquets for the interior.

  4. If it is necessary to use branches with leaves and flowers for decoration, they are laid out on special porous paper. Sheets change as they absorb moisture. You can place a rose branch between absorbent paper, pressing it on top with a press.
  5. Save the strength of a dry flower by using wire. For the head of a rose, a loop is made into which the bud is threaded. The rest of the wire is wrapped around the stem. Such strong support will not allow the fragile flower to crumble.

Decorated roses for garden design

Bouquets of dried roses of different colors will suit the romantic style of the garden. You can put them in pots near the gazebo and inside it. Before collecting the stems it is necessary to sprinkle dried flowers with hair spray.

Properly dry the flowers, keep the shape, color of the petals

Tatyana Zaichenko, Izhevsk: “I want to make winter flowers from my flowers. Tell me, how to dry the flowers correctly, in order to preserve not only the shape, but also the color of the petals? ”

There are several ways to preserve plants for a bouquet: in the air, in moisture-absorbing bulk materials, in glycerin, under pressure and with an iron.

Air drying

The most affordable and simple - air drying.

To do this, use a dry, dark, well-ventilated and cool room, but the air temperature should not be below 10 ° C. Depending on the size of the plants, drying lasts from 5 to 15 days.

Ears of cereal plants and ornamental grasses are easily dried. They are collected just before flowering, or when they acquire a light straw color.

Tied in bunches of 5-10 pieces. In this case, the ends are trimmed so that they are at the same level, and the tops at different. Bundles are best made from plants of the same species.

In the attic, in the garage or storeroom at a distance of not less than 15 cm from the ceiling, they stretch the line, wire or rope and hang the plants at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other, fixing them with clothespins.

Flowering plants are cut with the full blooming of flowers. Lower leaves and thorns are removed. 5-6 plants are tied so that the flowers do not touch each other, and the leaves are well ventilated. Hang heads down.

If the stem of the flower is thin and fragile, then a thin wire is passed through it so as not to break after drying.

If it is necessary to bend the stem, after drying at the bend, it is wrapped with a cloth dipped in hot water, and after a while, gently twisting it, give it the desired shape.

It is possible to dry in the air such flowering plants as cornflower, ornamental bows, poppy, montbrecia, lilac (they are cut off when only the lower flowers blossom), physalis. Gypsophila and hydrangea are dried differently.

Water is poured into a vase to a height of 5 cm and the ends of the stems are immersed in it. Drying occurs as water evaporates. The tips of the stems in it are cut off, as they may become moldy.

Drying flowers in bulk materials

In order to preserve the appearance of valuable flower plants as much as possible, they are dried in bulk solids that absorb moisture well - storms, perlite, silica gel - or with the laying of flowers in pieces of absorbent cotton.

With this drying, the petals do not shrink, and the color becomes more intense.

The flowers are cut off on a sunny day, so that there is no moisture on the petals, they separate the head from the stem and insert the wire into it, under the flower it is rolled up into a ring.

Desiccant poured into a deep cup or box with a layer of 1-2 cm and placed on it with the rest of the stem flowers down.

Then carefully pour the petals so that they are separated from each other, and trying to get the substance penetrated deep into the flower. When the head is completely filled, the box is tightly closed and put in a dry place for 3-5 days.

The dried flower is lifted with tweezers, the desiccant is poured into a bowl and reused.

The rest of the powder is gently brushed off, blown off with a rubber pear and wire is connected to the flower with a separately dried stem.

Can be used as a desiccant river sand. Only it is necessary to sift it beforehand and to heat it well on the fire. In this case, drying lasts 15-20 days. As a container, it is better to use a round cardboard box with an opening bottom, because after drying, it is better to remove the sand from the bottom.

So should be dried roses, peonies, dahlias, chrysanthemums, marigolds, buttercups, daisies, primroses, delphiniums.

Liquid plant preservation method - in glycerol

There is also a liquid way to preserve plants - in glycerol.

So usually canned branches and leaves of shrubs. For this, a mixture of two parts hot water and one part glycerol is used.

This liquid is poured into a vessel approximately at a height of 10 cm. In plants, the lower leaves are cut off, the stem is cleaved with a knife.

Put them first in a vase with water for 3-4 hours, and then for 2-3 weeks in a glycerin solution. Keep in a cool and dark place. As the solution evaporates, hot water is poured.

With the use of glycerin dried amaranth, Badan, barberry, cotoneaster, cypress, fern.

Drying the leaves of plants under the iron, under the press

Under the iron dried leaves of plants. Put them on paper, cover with paper and iron it with iron. Then the paper sheets are changed to new ones.

This procedure is repeated until complete evaporation of moisture from the leaves.

And herbs, and cereals, and flowering plants will crumble less, if after drying you sprinkle them with hair spray.

Under the press, dried plants that are going to be used in the panel. For this, paper is laid on plywood and flowers are wrapped in paper.

Cover with a sheet of plywood or thick cardboard and put the load. Under one load, you can dry several layers of plants.

To speed up the process, the plants are shifted every day, replacing the damp paper with dry. Usually it takes 5-7 days to dry under a press.

Most herbs, ferns, flowers of pansies, clematis, mallow, primroses and violets can be dried by pressing.

Most people prefer to keep things of sentimental value, not an exception flowers and plants. Whether it is a gift from a colleague, friend or loved one, flowers bring joy, we all want to leave this pleasant moment in memory. To preserve the beautiful flowers, as well as the special memories associated with them, try to make a herbarium.

After you have chosen the flowers from which you are going to make the herbarium, you need to prepare them. If you cannot make a herbarium right away, put the flowers in a resealable bag and store them in the refrigerator. When you are ready to dry the plants, follow a few simple steps that ensure that the flowers retain their color and freshness:

  1. To ensure maximum water absorption, place the stems in the water immediately after cutting. Cut the stem at an angle.
  2. Remove all leaves that will be below the waterline in the vase. If this is not done, the leaves, which will be in the water, will rot and this can cause the reproduction of bacteria that shorten the life of the flower.
  3. Place the flowers in a vase with clean water and add fertilizer or a teaspoon of sugar.

Place the container of flowers in a cool, ventilated place, protected from direct sunlight for several hours, it is necessary to moisten your flowers.

  • It is important to note that the simplest plants in the manufacture of herbarium are flowers with flat edges. To make a herbarium from volumetric flowers, such as orchids or roses, you must divide them in half using scissors or a knife.
  • Put the flower on the paper with the flat side and you are ready to make herbarium.
  • Use Paper

To make a herbarium, you must dry the flowers as quickly as possible to prevent darkening. There are a number of different types of paper that can be used to achieve this, for example, printer paper, cardboard, blotter paper, cloth, or napkins. Avoid applying things that have a pronounced texture, as it may end up imprinted on the petals.

    Wooden Flower Press

This is how you can make and use your own wooden flower press:

    1. Cut two pieces of rectangular plywood of 22 × 30 cm. Drill holes in each corner in two pieces, the holes should be aligned with each other when you put the plywood on top of one another.
    2. Place a flower between two sheets of paper, the sandwich should be a tree, paper, flowers, paper, wood.
    3. Use bolts and nuts to pull it all together. Also for the screed four clamps may well fit. Change absorbent sheets about once every four days (this helps prevent rotting); the flower will need to be held in the press for three to four weeks.

You can buy a ready press for flowers in the store.

    Book Press

This is not only the most popular method of making herbarium from flowers, but also the easiest one. Choose the heaviest books, such as a dictionary or phone book. Be careful, moisture may leak through the paper pads into the pages, which may cause wrinkling, so use books that are not so expensive for you.

    1. Place a flower between two sheets of paper and place them between the pages in the middle of the book. Depending on the size of the book, you can hold several colors at the same time. However, make sure that there is enough space between the herbaria so that the moisture released from one flower does not get onto the other.
    2. Use more books, you can put a load on top of the books, for example a brick. Check that the flowers lie flat and do not hesitate when closing.
    3. Do not forget to change absorbent sheets. After two to three weeks, the flowers will become completely dry. Use a pair of tweezers to remove the flower or use your fingers very carefully to remove it, since a completely dried flower is very fragile.

If you do not want to wait two to four weeks, you should consider using an iron. As in other cases, the use of iron for herbarium, has its own nuances, here are the main ones:

    1. Place the flowers between two absorbent sheets of paper, then smooth out the heavy book.
    2. Make sure that there is no water in the iron and the surface is dry. The last thing you want to do is wet the flowers again.
    3. Heat the iron at minimum power. After that, put the heated iron on the top sheet of paper and hold for 10 to 15 seconds. You do not need to make a sliding motion with an iron, as if you are ironing a shirt. Remove the iron and wait another 15 seconds for the paper to cool, then repeat this process. Lift the paper carefully to check the condition of the flower. It should be hard and dry.

    Microwave

Finished microwave dryers are sold in stores, but you can easily make it yourself. Use two ceramic tiles and gum to squeeze them together. You can use the book instead of book tiles to compress colors, the main thing is that the book does not have metal elements in the binding, for example, small brackets for binding pages.

    1. When using ceramic tiles, do not forget to lay the flowers with paper. Place a flower between the sheets.
    2. Use a low temperature (high power setting can make your herbarium brown), hold 30 to 60 seconds at a time, this is enough not to overdo the flowers, check the herbarium condition after each time.
    3. If you have several pairs of books or tiles, you can save time and dry the next batch of flowers while the other is cooling.
    4. When the flowers are dry, complete the process with a book press or whatever.

They should be completely dry for two days.

If you have grown flowers on your own or received as a gift on a special day, flowers that are most significant to you, you can leave them in your collection for many years using any of these vital methods.

Give women flowers or what can be done with dried rose petals

I am 100% sure that I will not exaggerate when I say that every woman faced this situation. A bouquet of gorgeous roses, presented to his beloved or co-workers, having stood in the vase for the time allotted to him, simply faded away. And then withered. With what regret we throw these once beautiful flowers in the trash, while thinking that you can still do something with these dry petals! That's just what?

When my rose petals accumulated quite a lot, I began to wonder what sort of thing they could create, and this is what happened.

Well-known rose oil. We are looking for it in specialized stores or pharmacies, but it turns out that the recipe for its preparation at home is not so complicated. Rose petals are mixed in a 1: 1 ratio with good olive oil, after which the container (a regular jar) is tightly closed and kept for a week in the sunlight. After 7 days, refrigerate. Rose oil retains its healing properties throughout the year. Rose oil is used in cosmetology to soften the skin of the hands and face. It is enough from time to time to lubricate them as a cream with skin. And it will be fully hydrated. But there is another little trick. Rose oil has an amazing ability to completely harmless blending with your favorite cream. Just drop a drop of oil into it, and then to your obligatory action your cream will also acquire the “usefulness” of rose oil.

If you still have oil at home, and give flowers all, do the following: lotion for oily and normal skin of the face. 2 cups dry petals of red roses pour 0.25 liters of table vinegar (70%), tightly close the container and insist for 3 weeks. Then we filter and dilute with boiled water in the ratio 1: 1. Our lotion will perfectly clean and tone the skin. And also to increase its protective functions.

For dry skin you can also make lotion. 1 cup of dry rose petals, preferably red (with more beneficial properties), pour almond or peach oil (so as to cover the rose petals completely) and heat in a water bath until the petals lose their color and reach the transparency of the lotion. Then filter and store in a tightly closed bottle.

Do not need lotion? Then we make rose water. It perfectly removes swelling and skin irritation.

    Why dry roses

Dried roses and their petals can be used in different ways:

    • Dried buds and petals look beautiful in applications, paintings, collages, panels, herbaria, as well as in festive garlands.
    • Dried flowers and rose petals, filled with epoxy resin, are used to create jewelry: rings, earrings, pendants and pendants.
    • Dried rose petals are used at home for making lotion or toilet water.
    • Dried petals can be used instead of fresh ones to create a romantic atmosphere in the bedroom, bathroom or jacuzzi. They sprinkle newlyweds during the wedding ceremony.
    • From the dried rose petals, you can make unusual drinks, addition to pastry or cook jam.

Tip!If it was not possible to dry the bud entirely, and he lost color or shape, divide it into petals. They can be used in cooking or home cosmetology. However, shriveled and dark petals will look ugly in handicrafts, and they are hardly suitable for creating a romantic atmosphere.

    Which roses are best dried?

Roses selected for drying should be:

    • Fresh. It is better to use freshly cut flowers or buds. If you start to dry them later, they will wither and not dry. For the same reason, you need to immediately start drying the bouquet just donated.
    • With dense petals. The stronger and denser the petals, the better the flower will retain its shape and color.
    • No stains or damage. Damaged buds after drying poorly retain their shape, and the spots on the petals, which were previously barely noticeable, will become completely dark.
    • Not fully disclosed. If you dry a fully opened bud, its petals will disintegrate.
    • With a small stem, but not shorter than 2-3 cm. Roses are faster and better dried without a long stem, but you cannot cut a flower under the base either. This will cause the petals to fall.

Tip!Do not cut for drying roses, covered with drops of dew. Wait for them to dry completely. Then the mold will be scary.

    On air

The advantage of drying roses in the air is simplicity. But there is a drawback - this is a change in the color of the petals. For drying, you will need a dark and well-ventilated room (attic, darkened balcony or veranda, terrace).

Step-by-step instructions for drying roses in the air:

    1. Pull the rope in the room near the ceiling.
    2. Cut the lower leaves off the stem so that the flower looks beautiful.
    3. Shorten the stem to the desired size and cut the thorns.
    4. If the room is dusty, protect each bud with gauze.
    5. Wrap each flower with a strip of cloth or a thick cord and tie it to a hanging rope (you can use clothespins).
    6. Keep a distance of 10-15 cm between the flowers. With dense hanging, the development of mold is possible.
    7. Leave the roses for 2-3 weeks until they are completely dry. During this time, in conditions of poor ventilation, it is necessary to additionally ventilate the room twice a day.
    8. When the petals become hard and fragile, the flowers can be removed.

Tip!So that roses with this method of drying do not lose their shape, do not allow the petals to touch each other. For this space between them, lay cotton. This must be done even in the center of the bud. In order not to damage the flower, use thin tweezers.

This is a more laborious way of drying roses. However, thanks to him, the color is better preserved, and the petals retain their original shape.

    1. Rinse river sand from fine dust, dry and calcine it in the oven.
    2. Sift the sand and put it in a cardboard box.
    3. Rose with a short stem (2-3 cm) stick in the sand and gently pour it to the top.
    4. Put the box in a dark and dry place for 2-3 weeks (it is better to keep it longer so as not to reach the flower ahead of time).
    5. Make a few holes in the bottom of the box so that the sand gets enough sleep. You cannot dig a rose with your hands, otherwise it will be damaged.
    6. When all the sand has poured out, take a flower by the stem and turn it over to remove the remaining sand between the petals.

Tip!It is easier to use not quartz sand, but river sand. He needs nothing more than calcination. Buy this sand can be in the pet store.

This is one of the easiest ways to have one feature - the flowers do not retain their original shape, becoming flat. But the color remains almost the same.

    1. Take a sheet of office paper and fold it in half.
    2. Inside, insert a pink bud with a short stem, gently straightening the petals.
    3. Wrap a sheet of rose with rice napkins, and at the end - another paper sheet.
    4. Put the "luggage" in a thick and large book, and press it down with a heavy object (a stack of other books, a pack of salt or sugar). It is desirable that the book was either old or inexpensive. Such publications have sheets without gloss, and they absorb moisture well.
    5. Remove the rose in 1-1.5 months and place it for another 3-4 days in a box with semolina to remove the remaining moisture.

Attention!Instead of a book, you can use any other press. For example, glass. But in this case, the rose must be wrapped in a larger number of sheets, since the glass does not absorb water.

How to dry a rose to keep its color

The usual methods of drying roses change the color of the petals. They become darker or lighter. But there is a method to preserve the original color. For this you need liquid paraffin.

    Paraffin drying procedure:

    1. Place an old paraffin candle in the waste container.
    2. If the container is metallic, melt the candle over the fire, and if it is glass or plastic, in a microwave oven.
    3. Brush apply liquid paraffin to the base of the side lobes.
    4. After hardening, begin processing the inner petals, covering them with an even and thin paraffin layer.

Paraffin-treated rose is not afraid of mold and rot. It retains the original color and shape, acquiring only a light gloss.

    How to quickly dry roses

To quickly dry the whole rose, use a microwave:

    1. Pour a layer of desiccant (silica gel, sand or semolina) into the cup.
    2. Stick a short stalk into the flower.
    3. Put the cup in the microwave and run it for 2 minutes.
    4. Check if the flower has dried out. If the petals are hard and dense, like paper, but do not turn into dust when gently pressed, but drying can be finished.
    5. If the bud is not dry enough, run the microwave for another 1 minute. Alternate points 4 and 5 until the rose is dry.
    6. Leave the bud in the dryer for another day, then remove it and use it for its intended purpose.

Tip!In order for the rose to better preserve the color of the petals, put a cup of water in the microwave next to the rose. The dryer is not needed in this case. Another option is to dry in the microwave for only 2-3 minutes, and then dry in air for 3-4 days.

How to dry a rose in various substances

Above was considered a method of drying roses in the sand. But the method has the disadvantage of polluting the buds: small grains of sand get stuck between the petals, and it is almost impossible to get them out of there without damaging the form. This problem will not occur if you use another dryer.

For drying rose buds can be used (drying time for this substance is given in parentheses):

    • Buru (from 14 to 18 days).
    • Wheat or cornmeal, semolina (from 2 to 2.5 weeks).
    • Silica gel (from 5 to 6 days).

The procedure for drying roses in the substance:

    1. Separate the bud, leaving a short stalk (about 3 cm).
    2. Stick a thin wire at a right angle, fasten its ends to form a ring. This is necessary in order not to touch the bud itself while performing various flower manipulations. With the help of wire it can be attached to the right place.
    3. Pour the substance of your choice into a container, cup or bowl. The layer should be between 4 and 5 cm thick.
    4. Stick the rose in the dryer with the stalk down.
    5. Carefully sprinkle the petals with the same desiccant, which should cover the flower completely.
    6. Close the container (cup) with a lid and put it in a warm place. There should not be direct rays of the sun.
    7. After 5 or 14 days (depending on what substance you use for drying) with a toothpick, check the rose. If its petals are hard, but do not break from a light touch, then drying can be finished. If they break, the bud is over dry. And if they have kept the softness, leave to dry for a few more days.
    8. Carefully remove the dried bud with tweezers and turn it over to shake off any residues stuck between the pink petals.

Tip!If you want to get dried roses with a long stem (for making flower arrangements), then the stem should be dried separately. For this air method is suitable. Subsequently, the buds are attached to the already dried stalk.

    How to dry rose petals

You can dry the rose petals in the same ways as whole buds:

    • On air. Such drying lasts from 12 to 18 days. Petals shrink and lose their original color. To dry, cover a flat surface with a sheet of newspaper, and evenly spread the petals on top so that they do not touch each other (otherwise after drying they will be difficult to separate from each other). Cover them with gauze. Dried petals should be reminded cornflakes.
    • In the book. Take 2 sheets and put them in a massive book. Between them, put rose petals. They should not touch each other.

Cover them with another layer of desiccant. If you have more petals, lay them on top of the first layer, and so on. After 5 or 14 days (depending on the dryer selected), check the condition of the petals. If they are dense, dry, but do not break, carefully remove them.
    • In the microwave. Spread the petals on the surface of the plate and send them for 2-3 minutes in the microwave. You can dry them in the usual way within 1 day.

Dry the rose petals can still be in the oven. To do this, heat it to + 60 ... + 80 ° C. Cover the baking sheet with parchment, and put rose petals on it. Put them in the oven for 15 minutes, leaving the door slightly ajar. Then turn them over and place another quarter of an hour.

    Useful tips

Experienced florists who are engaged in drying of roses, give the following recommendations:

    • Any dried rose changes color, but to varying degrees. It also burns out, being in flower compositions. To preserve the beauty of the buds, they can tint the usual nail polish.
    • To keep the dried rose better in shape, it can be fixed with hairspray. But it is necessary to spray it carefully: the tool should not be wetted, it should cover the petals.
    • Store dried flower buds and petals in a cool and dark place. They can be put in a tin container. Storage in a glass container with a lid in the refrigerator is allowed.

Dried roses are elegant in their own way. Unlike fresh cut flowers, they can decorate the interior for months and even years. Dry half-opened buds or individual petals to create a unique picture or unusual panel. And from unclaimed flowers, prepare a fragrant and tonic tea.
