General information

Chickens Rhode Island: what are the features and advantages of the breed?

Rhode Island is a breed of chickens (we will give a description of it below), derived in the USA A. Farmers were engaged in the selection of this cross-country in the middle of the last century. For the first time such hens began to breed in the state of Rhode Island. Hence, in fact, their name went. Today in this area almost all farmers breed such a bird. These chickens, in fact, even became one of the symbols of the state of Rhode Island.

For the first time in the exhibition, these crosses took part in 1880. That is, the breed is quite old. But despite this, there are still no signs of degeneration in her. Farmers followed the purity of the line quite carefully.

When breeding the Rod Island, first fawn cocks were crossed with local chickens. Subsequently, the new breed improved once again. Breeders decided to cross it with speckled leggorny increased egg production.

These chickens were brought to Russia quite a long time ago. For the first time they began to breed them on collective farms in the 20s of the last century.

general description

Rhode Island is a breed of chickens belonging to the meat-and-egg direction of productivity. The appearance of this cross, since its ancestors were fighting cocks, is quite spectacular.

The main features of the American breed include:

elongated rectangular back,

erect red leaf comb

curled down beak medium size

orange strong legs.

The plumage at the Rhode Island Cross is dark red with glitter. The tails of chickens and cockerels are black with a greenish tint. White and yellow plumage is also not considered a defect. However, such chickens in farms are quite rare. In any case, the plumage of the rhode island hens is always very thick and dense. Laying of this breed has a white spot on the head.

There is also a variety of this hybrid with a pale red color. This type is bred mainly in poultry farms.

Rhode Island Hens: Performance Characteristics

At one year old, American hens reach a weight of about 3 kg. The mass of adult males is usually 3.5 kg. Rhode Island eggs carry a little less than many modern crosses. But their productivity in this regard is still quite high - about 180 pieces. in year. The eggs themselves are not too big - they weigh about 50-60 grams. Their shell color is brown.

Rhode Island is a breed of chickens that is popular with farmers, which can also be attributed to endurance. The safety of the young of this bird is about 97%. Sexual maturity of hens and cocks reach around the age of 6.5 months.

Rhode Island: breed features of chickens

The plumage of this cross, as already mentioned, is very dense. Therefore, in winter, even in the cold climate of Russia, in an unheated barn, this bird feels just fine. In the cold season, unlike in many modern breeds and hybrids, it practically does not reduce egg production. It is for this quality that the cross is mainly valued by farmers.

Adult rhode island chickens are thus not freezing in winter. However, the same cannot be said about chickens of this breed. Chicks fledge very long time. At the same time, their fluff is not too thick. Therefore, to allow hypothermia newly hatched chicks of this breed can not in any case.

Content Features

Rhode Island is a breed of chickens (the photo of this bird is presented on the page), which is allowed to be raised on both the full and cellular method. The second method, however, is considered more preferable. Having the opportunity to take walks near the barn of Rhode Island chickens usually carry more eggs.

Despite the fact that this bird is not afraid of cold weather, a litter of sawdust should be provided for it in the shed. The house itself needs to be warmed. Perches for these chickens are located at a height of about 80 cm from the floor. Nests are hung on the wall in secluded places, so that the hens can easily fall into them. These chickens are not afraid of dampness. However, at least for the simplest ventilation in the barn for them to arrange, of course, worth it.

The nature of these chickens is peace-loving and kind. Therefore, they can be kept in the courtyard with almost any other economic bird.

Maternal instinct in rhode island chickens, unfortunately, is not developed very well. On eggs, this bird, in principle, can sit. However, this happens quite rarely. Therefore, breeding Rhode Island chickens is most often in incubators.

How to feed

No special diet is required for these chickens. They are fed in the same way as almost any other poultry meat-and-egg direction of productivity. That is, in the mornings they give the hens grain, at lunch - mash and in the evening - again concentrated feed. On such a menu, the chickens will carry well and gain enough weight quickly. The proportion of concentrated feed in the diet of this bird should be about 2/3.

Of course, to get high-quality eggs and to preserve the health of the bird, it is necessary to pour a little premix, grated chalk and salt in the mash prepared for it.

Feedback from farmers about the breed is positive

The advantages of the Rhode Island chickens are that homeowner owners include, of course, first of all, their relatively high productivity in terms of weight gain and egg production. Also, the breed is considered a plus and its tolerance for the harsh Russian climate. In addition, many farmers note the fact that such a bird is very undemanding to feed. Rhode Island is a breed of chickens, reviews of which are positive also because, in addition to the obligatory grains, you can include absolutely any greens in the menu of its representatives (nettle, alfalfa, carrot and radish tops, etc.), roots and fruits. . This bird does not refuse pumpkin or zucchini.

With good care and nutrition, the standard performance of these chickens can easily exceed. For example, when using vitamins and special additives, their egg production often reaches 220 pcs. in year.

Actually the eggs themselves in Rhode Island, according to many farmers, are very tasty. They are especially good for omelets. In any case, the soap taste, like the eggs of many modern crosses, they do not have.

Negative reviews

Rhode Island is a breed of chickens, the main disadvantage of which, according to many farmers, is the weak maternal instinct. To take care of the replenishment of the herd, homeowners who breed this bird, in most cases have to do it themselves. At the same time, with artificial breeding, the survival rate of Rhode Island chickens, unfortunately, is only about 70%. It is believed that the eggs of the hens of this breed are therefore better not to incubate, but to be placed under the hens of other breeds.

Also, the minus of this bird is that it is slightly less productive than some domestic meat-egg hybrids. Indirectly, some of its exoticism is also related to the disadvantages of this bird. It is rather difficult to get real rod-islands in Russia. On sale mainly there are crossbreds with lower productivity than purebred chickens.

Pygmy Rod Islands

In addition to the usual poultry, a very small variety of this cross can be bred on farms. Mini Rhode Island is a breed of chickens that is popular with farmers, mainly because it requires very little space. It is possible to breed this bird in small open-air cages.

Rhode Island dwarf cockerels weigh only about 1.5 kg, and chickens - 1 kg. Egg production of this variety is about 140 pcs. in year. The eggs themselves in such a bird are rather small. They weigh about 40 grams. With regard to care, this variety is as unpretentious as the main one. Farmers reviews dwarf rod-ildy deserved very good. It is believed that this species is particularly well suited for breeding on country homestead farms.

Detailed description of the breed and its characteristics for beginners and the most experienced poultry farmers

Breed Rhode Island today is considered one of the most common. At poultry farmers she deserved such an honor thanks to her excellent meat-beefing qualities, able to satisfy the highest demands.

The history of these chickens begins in the nineteenth century in the United States, when it was bred by complex crosses of a large number of diverse breeds. First of all, the local chickens of the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island were crossed with representatives of the Red Malaya and Shanghai fawn breeds.

The result was quite productive birds, which were once again crossed with the cocks of the Brown Leggorn breed. As a result, in addition to good characteristics, the new breed also became the owner of a beautiful red comb and a nice color.

Standardized breed in the early twentieth century, in the 20s of which the Rhode Islands were first introduced to the territory of the then Tsarist Russia. Here they were immediately praised by both landlords and ordinary villagers. In this regard, today this breed is quite common and familiar to almost everyone, although not everyone thinks about its name and origin.

For what qualities the breed so fond: the main advantages and advantages of chickens Rhode Island

It is important to note that the Rhode Island breed is popular not only among poultry houses, but also among breeders, because it provides excellent genetic material. So, from the described breed to the next generations, not only high productivity indicators are often transmitted, but also the characteristics of the appearance and color of feathers.

Thus, the breed of Rhode Island is the source for obtaining the famous Zagorsky salmon smokes, the breed of New Hampshire and Pervomayskaya. Such crossings without problems can be done at home. For example, when crossing the breed of chickens with Kuchinsky anniversary roosters, they get excellent broilers with extraordinary precocity and good meat characteristics.

But this is not the last advantage of the breed. Among other excellent characteristics of Rhode Island are:

good and early egg-laying. Rhode Island chicken eggs start at a very early age, around 210 days (7 months). At the same time, it affects not only a large number of eggs, but also the fact that these chickens can nest throughout the year, regardless of the season and weather conditions. Practically all eggs produced from chickens are fertilized, which allows them to grow the next generation from their own products,

The young generation of chickens has a very high viability, which greatly facilitates their cultivation. Chickens of the Rhode Island breed suffer less and have a stable immunity against most of the most common diseases in chickens. In addition, they grow quite, which also has a positive effect on their viability. In general, it is worth noting that the safety of the young generation is equal to the figure of 95%, and of adults - about 86%,

undemanding to feed. This breed is well adapted to feeding the food that is under their feet. At the same time, such food is best displayed on the height and weight gain in chickens. Of course, that in our climatic conditions it is not possible to provide such a diet throughout the year, so from the summer, especially for chickens, dried grass should be harvested,

Ideal for breeding in individual households. When grown on large farms do not give high results of productivity. This is due to both the characteristics of the content, and with feeding. Thus, we can conclude that it is important for representatives of the Rhode Island breed to provide large spaces, not only for walking but inside the house,

  • unpretentiousness and endurance of chickens, with which it is difficult to compare with most other breeds. The idea is that these birds can be kept in the simplest poultry houses, even without special perches and places for nests. Also, they are able to very easily and quickly adapt to the most diverse characteristics and climatic conditions of detention, which facilitates their breeding.
  • They tolerate very low frosty temperatures, although at that time birds should be supervised very carefully, providing warm water and fresh food. To warm the house for the winter will also not be superfluous.

What are the disadvantages of representatives of the breed of Rhode Island?

To be objective means to devote your readers not only to the positive features of the breed, but also to acquaint you with its shortcomings. Thus, in the household, the hens of the described breed exhibit a rather weak incubation instinct.

Even those individuals who have begun to demonstrate the desire to hatch eggs since spring have not always diligently perform this task. Thus, the percentage of hatching from the Rhode Islands is on average 70-75%. Of course, this percentage largely depends on the fertilization of eggs, but the role of the hen still remains important.

We get acquainted with the detailed description of the main breed characteristics of the Rhode Island

The special attention is attracted by the plumage of these chickens, since this is the first breed trait that distinguishes the Rhode Islands from other known and similar breeds. Their feathers are shiny, densely and densely located in relation to the integument. There are no pillows in the plumage. The main color is very saturated red-brown. True, with the age of the bird, he pales a little, but still retains its elegance and recognition.

An important characteristic is that the core of the feathers of the described breed is colored reddish or salmon.. Sometimes representatives of the plumage of white are found in this breed, but they are not very common.

For real poultry farmers, the plumage is of much greater importance, but the characteristics of the bird's body and its parts. After all, they can also tell a lot about its productivity and, of course, point to the breed:

The entire body of Rhode Island is characterized by massiveness, which is evidence of good meat qualities. The shape of it is rectangular, set horizontally. The chest is rather broad, muscular,

the head is medium in size and round in shape; it is decorated with a characteristic upright comb with leaf-shaped teeth, of which there are usually five. Often, the comb in Rhode Island has a red color, but in rare cases, individuals with a pink comb are also found,

The representatives of the breed are also impressed by the power of the neck, not only for roosters, but also for chickens. It is medium in length, but due to the beautiful and lush mane it seems that it is very large in diameter,

the beak is very small. In shape, it is slightly bent to the bottom, painted yellow,

Due to the rather large size of the body and its large weight, the legs of the Rhode Island breeds are quite strong and short, which gives them good stability and allows them to move easily. No feathering on the legs

wing sizes are small, but they are distinguished by rather wide feathers,

the tail gives the birds refinement and elitism, although it does not differ in large size. It is rather short, rounded and well feathered. The color of tail feathers is usually black, but their ebb has bright green, silver or purple colors,

the color of the eyes of the representatives of the described breed is red, the same as the earlobes,

  • the rites of the Rhode Island are colored yellow, low, have no plumage, as an exclusive feature of the breed a red stripe is allowed on the sides.
  • In the poultry industry, there are very strict requirements for the breeds, and if all the Rhode Island attributes described above are not inherent to a particular individual, they can be immediately rejected.

There is even a whole list of signs that can most often be found among the offspring of the described breed, but are evidence of the breed’s degeneration, the presence of incest with other birds. So, Unacceptable breed disadvantages of these chickens are considered:

the shape of a triangular shape,

    overstated torso,

too massive with coarse skeletal bones,

underdeveloped back and tail parts, as well as a roof-like or too high tail,

back with a hump or too big cavity

    elongated head shape

    light colored eyes

formation of pillows in the feather cover of birds,

too light or dull plumage color,

  • patina in the form of specks on feathers of wings,
  • Chickens and roosters also have many different features. In particular, a great advantage of the Rhode Island breed is that it is possible to determine gender from an early age.

It helps to make a special gene of goldenness, which is manifested in the first day of the life of the chicken and gives the accuracy of determining its sex up to 80%.

To do this, you should well examine the features of the color of the fluff on the wings: in the purebred representatives of the breed, it can have very different variations - from light brown to darkest with spots and black stripes.

on average, roosters can reach 3.1–3.9 kilograms by the age of one and a half years, although with good fattening, you can grow up to 4 kilograms, although it’s worth being afraid of obesity,

  • Chickens at the same age weigh significantly less, because they are also smaller in size, only 2.5-2.9 kilograms.
  • Thus, even with one carcass of an ordinary chicken you can get a sufficiently large amount of meat. This Rhode Island product has exceptional tenderness and very good taste.

When describing chickens of the Rhode Island breed, experts always focus on the very good incubation qualities of the eggs of this breed, which, if properly incubated, can almost 100% produce new offspring.

What features are different breeding chickens of Rhode Island?

Even in spite of the aforementioned lack of poorly developed chickens instinct in chickens of this breed, it is quite simple to develop new generations. The task is facilitated by well-fertilized eggs, which representatives of the breed will inflict a huge amount of you in a year.

If there is a hen among the Rhode Islands who vehemently wants to hatch eggs, you can safely use it, all the more so because she will take maternal care quite well. If you do not have such an opportunity, you will have to use a hen of another breed or lay eggs in an artificial incubator.

The period of incubation of eggs for this breed is the same as for other hens - 20-21 days. It is not necessary to lay more than 15 eggs under one hen, as it will be difficult for them to shelter them and warm them. It is best to lay out 13. It is best to plant the chicken in mid-April, so that the chickens appear at the onset of this May heat, and it was easier to grow them.

Necessary conditions for chickens and adults

First of all, chickens need to be provided with food. You can give them millet, corn and dairy products. Also, from two weeks you need to start to interfere with eating green feed.

With this diet, they will quickly grow and gain weight. The diet of adult individuals is more diverse and should include, in addition to a nutritious food, products containing many trace elements that are useful and necessary for the health of birds. To do this, they buy special additives, give shell, or egg shells, try to use as much as possible green fodder.

The most important components of the Rhode Island diet can be:

a variety of cereals, from wheat to corn, which should form the basis of all feed,

    root vegetables, raw and cooked,

fruits and berries, but in very limited quantities,

dried nettles, alfalfa, ordinary finely chopped hay mixed with other feed,

  • clean and fresh water, which should always be in the house and near it.
  • By the onset of cold weather, you need to take care of a good poultry house, otherwise you will not be able to rejoice at the healthy population of chickens and their high egg-laying. The temperature in it should not fall lower than + 10ºС. Although in the summer, you also need to take care of good ventilation, which will help to reduce the summer heat. In winter, additional lighting will help maintain the productivity of birds and their sexual activity.

To obtain good productivity, it is also recommended that at the end of the summer or at the beginning of autumn, to sort the chicken population. It is necessary to select only those young chickens who demonstrate excellent egg production, the rest is usually allowed for meat.

In the content of these chickens it is important to provide them with regular walking on relatively large spaces. Then, in the summer, you can pretty much save on feed.

Do not forget to install a special tank with sand or ashes near the house, in which chickens can take “baths”: clean their feathers and get rid of various pests.

    How did the breed appear?

The homeland of the hens of Rhode Island breed is the USA (40-50s of the 19th century), in particular, two states in which territory selection works were conducted:

To obtain this species, the poultry farmers engaged in mating of local hens and the Malay red, as well as the Shanghai fawn males. Mixtures that turned out at the exit underwent further selection, now with leggorny (brown). It is from the last breed that the Rhode Island inherited scallops in the form of a leaf.

In 1880, an agricultural exhibition was held in Massachusetts, USA, where new chickens were presented for the first time. 1904 was marked in the history of this breed by assigning it to the standard of excellence.

1926 - the time of appearance of Rhode Island chickens on the territory of Russia.

    Features of appearance

    Chicken Rhode Island with chickens

Birds are characterized by a small round head, planted on a powerful middle neck. The decoration of the latter is a magnificent mane. Crowned head comb, having a leaf shape with five teeth. It is flat and upright. Sometimes individuals come across with a scallop in the shape of a rose.

The head ends with a yellow beak, most often short or medium in size, which bends at the tip. On the sides of the head there are developed red ear lobes. The eyes of the representatives of the breed are also painted red.

The body of the body of Rhode Island chickens is rectangular, planted horizontally. The poultry breast is wide and massive. The same characteristics are different and back. Small, short wings covered with broad feathers are pressed to the body. Rhode Island members have a short, rounded tail with thick and fluffy plumage. The body stands firmly on strong, albeit short, legs that do not have feather cover.

A typical feather color for chickens of this breed is considered to be brown-red, shiny. Its brightness is lost with increasing bird age. The tail is painted black (the males are more intense than the females), has bright green play, which in some individuals may be purple or silver. The feather cover of the bird is thick and dense. This description is confirmed by the photos below:

A specific feature of the breed is the so-called “gene of goldenness”, which allows to visually distinguish chickens from the first day of life by gender, practically unmistakably - the accuracy is about 80%.

To do this, you need to pay attention to the color of the wing wings:

    • the rooster is white,
    • the hen is brown, decorated with white stripes.

If you can look at the spot on the back of the head of a chicken, this is definitely a future layer.

    Breed characteristic

Representatives of the Rhode Island breed have quite good qualitative and quantitative indicators of productivity, thanks to which breeders used them to get new breeds of chickens (New Hampshire, May Day, Zagorian salmon and many others). The main parameters of Rhode Island are presented in the table:

This breed was bred by breeders in the United States in the middle of the XIX century. These birds appeared due to mating with Malaysian and Shanghai roosters. The bred chicks, in turn, were crossed with the Leghorn.

The standard was first described in 1904, and 12 years later these birds appeared in Russia. Today, about 70% of farms own chickens of the Rhode Island breed.

    Appearance Description

These birds are unpretentious and hardy. They perfectly tolerate low temperatures, which is very important in Russian conditions. It is worth considering the basic requirements for this breed.

    Table 1. Breed Description

These are the basic standards on which the hens of this breed should be leveled. There are a few drawbacks that are not allowed. Birds from which they are identified are immediately sent for meat:

    • triangular body shape
    • high position
    • unsightly skeleton,
    • overweight,
    • the back of the body is poorly developed,
    • tail above normal
    • violation of the shape of the back or head,
    • the presence of white formations on the lobes or on the plumage,
    • the eyes are not red,
    • the presence of white fluff in the feathers,
    • black strokes along the stem of the feathers.

Important. An adult can weigh up to 4 kg. However, females usually weigh no more than 3 kg.

What is a dwarf rhode island

This is a subspecies that was bred in Germany. It is significantly inferior to the original in performance. So, these birds bring up to 120 eggs per year, the mass of which is only 40 grams. Carcasses have a weight of not more than 1 kg. This subspecies is used as a genetic reserve. In industry, it is not in demand, but some farmers breed it in their own farmstead.

    Features and key benefits

Rhode Island chickens possess a genome of goldenness associated with sex. Already on the first day you can determine the sex of the chicken with a high level of accuracy. For this you need to carefully consider the color of the plumage. Thoroughbred babies have a brown color with black spots or stripes. If they are at the back of the head, then this is usually the female. The males on the wings should be white fluff.

Here are the main advantages of this breed:

    • often used for breeding, with its help appeared New Hampshire, May Day, salmon and other types of chickens,
    • the first clutch is already 7 months old; however, a poorly expressed incubation instinct gives a low hatching rate in a natural way (up to 75%),
    • excellent endurance and vitality,
    • layers make eggs at any time of year
    • egg production up to 220 pieces / year with a weight of 58 - 63 grams,
    • the survival rate of young stock up to 95% with the right content,
    • birds can eat grass,
    • high taste characteristics of the meat of these chickens.

Thus, it is best to use an incubator for breeding these chickens, in this case the efficiency can reach 85%. This is a great option for aspiring entrepreneurs who do not have extensive experience working with poultry.

Important. If the farmer selects only for external characteristics, then puberty of birds slows down, and therefore they begin to give eggs later. Also egg production is reduced. Therefore, it is important to find the best option for culling.

    Conditions of detention

Rhode Island chickens are unpretentious, but they need an equipped room where they will live. Also require high-quality feed to their performance was at a high enough level.

    Free Range Birds

    Coop Requirements

There are no special conditions for keeping this breed, however it is important:

    • the presence of straw litter not less than 10 cm,
    • take care of the presence of ventilation to replace the air in the room,
    • build nests, where birds will hatch eggs, at the rate of 1 nest for 5 - 6 chickens,
    • set several perches at 0.5 meters from the floor,
    • put a few feeders and drinkers so that the birds do not fight for food and water,
    • make the switching on and off of the light gradual, so that the chickens do not get scared and create the impression of dawn or sunset (the length of daylight hours for birds should be 14 hours),

It is necessary that there are no drafts in the room, otherwise the chickens will fall ill. Comfortable air temperature from 18 to 21 degrees. If it is low or high, the activity of chickens will decrease, which will negatively affect their performance.

The place where the chicks will hatch should be slightly obscured. It is also recommended to make several zones. In one will live the main livestock, and in the other young. If possible, it is better to place the young in another room.

Important. Rhode Island chickens do not tolerate life in cages, their productivity is sharply reduced. However, many farmers keep them exactly to save space in the barn and increase livestock. In such conditions it is required to carry out the change of livestock more often.

    Aviary requirements

If the chickens are in the summer on the walk, then you need to make an aviary. It must meet the following requirements:

    • the presence of greenery that chickens will tweak on their own (in this case, it will be possible to save on feed),
    • chain-link mesh with small cells, so that birds can not get stuck in it, thrusting its head out,
    • the fence on top of the same grid or roofing material so that predators could not get into the aviary,
    • building a small house with a roost (this will allow to control those chickens who decide to carry eggs in the open air, as sometimes, if the birds can walk outside, they themselves make nests and carry eggs there).

    Coop with aviary

It is important to ensure that its size is sufficient. If the chickens do not have enough space, then they begin to fight. You also need to install water bowls on the street. How to make a drinking bowl for chickens with your own hands, you can read in our article.

    Feeding features

Chickens need a well-chosen diet for rapid weight gain and to maintain egg production levels. Rhode Island chickens, like any other, eat the same feed. In particular, they can be given:

    • legumes, soybeans, bone meal, cake, meal and earthworms to replenish the body's protein,
    • oats and corn make fats,
    • various vegetables and whole grains are rich in carbohydrates.

Vitamin complexes are also required. They are given with food or added to water. Lime, gravel, shells and chalk are needed to improve the digestive tract and the formation of a normal shell in eggs. If the chicken does not have enough calcium in the body, then a thin film may appear instead of the shell. Such eggs cannot be used.

    What can not feed chickens

In order not to store a large amount of diverse feed, you must buy ready-made feed. It already has all the necessary minerals and vitamins. However, additional will have to take care of limestone and seashells. They can also be purchased in specialized stores.

Roosters and chickens Rhode Island in the hen house

The water of the hens should be changed once every two days, the chicks should be replaced every day. Feeding adults at least 4 times a day, chickens every 2 hours with a gradual increase in the interval.

In addition to dry food, you must also give cottage cheese from cottage cheese or other dairy products. However, they must be removed after 30 minutes, so that the birds do not eat sour cottage cheese.

    Rhode Island Chicken Purchase

It is best to buy birds of this breed from breeders. Large poultry farms closely monitor the health of chickens and have the required documents that indicate the presence of vaccinations. When buying in the bird market, there is a risk of being deceived, since there are quite a few other breeds in nature that resemble Rhode Island.

Here's how to buy chickens for your farm:

    The history of the breed

Joint work on breeding was carried out in America, in Rhode Island (hence the name of the new variety) and Massachusetts in the years 1840-1850. The selection was carried out in several stages:

    • mating of local breed females with males of red-brown Malay and pale yellow Shanghai hens,
    • connection of a new hybrid with a brown leggorn rooster,
    • cross the obtained mixture with the Corniches and Wiandotas.

The main focus of the breeders was on productivity, the new breed showed very good results. After that, it was decided to work on the color of chickens, as a result, the ridge shape was also changed. The bird was standardized at the beginning of the 20th century; it was brought to our country in 1920.

    Description, breed standards

Rhode Islands has a dense plumage, dense without pads, feathers are shiny dark reddish-brown, brown swelling, light. In pullets the color is bright, saturated, with age it dims a little, but remains decorative. The tail and wings adorn black feathers with a blue-green sheen. The core of the feathers is salmon or reddish.

Despite the availability of variety, some vendors go to the deception, selling less productive breeds under the guise of Rhode Islands. In order not to be mistaken, make purchases in proven, reliable places. The following signs will tell about the purity of the breed:

    • triangular hull shape
    • head extended,
    • massive, highly set body with coarse bone,
    • underdeveloped back,
    • too light eyes
    • high tail
    • flaws in the back (hollow or hump),
    • pillows in feather cover,
    • matte color of plumage, specks on feathers of wings.

There is a dwarf subspecies of Rhode Islands, it was bred in Germany. Standards for a small bird are the same as for a large one, only the weight is different - the bird does not grow larger than 1, 5 kilograms, the egg of dwarf chickens weighs no more than 40 grams.

    Productivity Indicators

Chickens reach sexual maturity at the age of 6–7 months; in a year one layer gives 160–170 eggs, rarely up to 220. The weight of the first eggs is 50 grams, then 58–65. The shell is light brown, rarely brown. Dwarf chickens produce no more than 120 eggs per year. The peak of egg production falls on 1, 5 years, then the number of eggs gradually decreases.

The maximum weight of the hens is reached when they turn 1, 5 years. The rooster weighs 3-4 kilograms, and the females are no more than 3, 5. The flesh is tender, very tasty. The quantity and quality of all products directly depends on the conditions of detention and the diet of birds.

    Advantages and disadvantages

The fame of Rhode Island spread like lightning, literally 2-3 years after the appearance of the bird in Russia, these chickens were in almost every yard. Now the situation has changed little, what is so attractive breed:

    • decorative appearance
    • in winter, immediately after molting, chickens continue to be carried as well as in summer,
    • unpretentiousness to food and conditions of detention,
    • good meat and egg products,
    • excellent immunity to disease
    • high survival rate of chickens and young stock,
    • fertility 80–100%,
    • пол цыплят можно определить в суточном возрасте,
    • малый расход корма.

Из недостатков внимания заслуживает только слабо развитый материнский инстинкт курочек, он проявляется только у 50% самок. Nowadays, more productive breeds are known - they give more eggs, grow larger, start to nest earlier, but mostly they require increased attention and a more refined diet.

    Adult chicken diet

Rhode Islands give the most simple purchased or hand-made mixes of crushed grains. For a good weight gain, sunflower seeds are added as complementary foods, but egg production may be reduced. The breed is well adapted to feeding grass, birds gladly peck out all the greens in the aviary, look for treats in the ground, crawling and digging.

Boiled, chopped root vegetables are excellent additives to grain mixtures. Rhode Islands can be given the same vegetables as other breeds, with the exception of potatoes. All because of the tendency of the bird to obesity, which leads to a decrease in the number of eggs. For good digestion, chalk, shell rock and crushed egg shells are added to the feed.

    How to care for chickens

Hatching chickens are immediately relocated to a brooder or to a box with a warm bedding, they provide standard light and temperature conditions. Daily chicks are fed boiled eggs, dairy products, boiled fish. Then, green dandelions, scalded nettles and special feed for chickens are gradually added to the diet.

The water (boiled, settled or filtered) in the drinkers should always be fresh, as well as food, the remnants are immediately discarded. Young roosters can be relocated to an adult herd and transferred to normal food at the age of 2-3 months, chickens a little later.

    Breeding breed

If, before selecting eggs for incubation, vitamins, fish oil, corn are added to the feed, then almost all eggs will be fertilized. In the case of Rhode Islands, incubation is the best breeding option. Even if a chicken sits on eggs, there is no guarantee that it will not lose interest in them in a week or two. It is better to lay eggs in the incubator in mid-April, so that the chickens hatched in warm May weather.

Thanks to the golden gene, the sex of the chicks is easily determined the next day after hatching. Daily chickens can be painted in different shades of brown, the males have a uniform gun tone, the females on the back of the head have dark stripes and specks. Another sign appears on the wings - they are almost white in roosters, and brown in the hens with light streaked patches.

In large poultry farms and reliable breeders, prices vary slightly, an incubation egg costs between 50 rubles, day-old chickens are about 200–500 rubles, and the price for an adult bird starts at 1,500 rubles. Chickens Rhode Island - a great option for novice breeders or for farmers who do not have much time to care for the bird. However, even among the most sophisticated poultry farmers who have tried many new breeds, there is a place for an unpretentious bird, giving large, tasty eggs and excellent meat products.

Rhode Islands are attracted by their unpretentiousness, they have good productive performance, but still slightly inferior to newer breeds. I feed the poultry with the simplest haystacks, be sure to add shell rock, root vegetables and greens, fruits and berries I give a little. For many years, the content of the breed has never limited the amount of food, did not notice obesity in chickens, always rushing regularly, the meat is delicious.

Chickens of the Rhode Island breed started 7 years ago; I myself breed. At first I used the incubator, and last year one hen was all striving to sit in the nest. She took a risk, laid 13 eggs to her, she sat them down, and even Mommy was good. Pleasant, but it is rather an isolated case. The birds are very calm, I keep them away from the snooty chickens, the aviary is closed, otherwise they roam all over the yard, they will peck out everything that they get. Rhode Island quickly get used to any conditions, but in crampedness they produce far fewer eggs.

It is necessary to maintain a constant temperature in the house (not lower than + 10 ° C), otherwise chickens may stop rolling. In winter, it is necessary to increase the illumination to maintain productivity.

In addition to Rhode Island, there are other breeds of chicken meat and egg directions.

For example, as mentioned above, the hens of New Hampshire were bred with the breed in question. The weight of the rooster is from 3500 to 4500 g., Hens - from 3000 to 3500 g. The egg production is about 200-220 eggs. The egg mass is 65-70 g. Unlike the Rhode Island chickens, the New Hampshire chickens have a much better incubation instinct.

Another breed obtained with the help of Rhode Island is the Kuchinsky Jubilee. The weight of the rooster reaches 3500-3800 g., Hens - 2400-3000 g. Egg production is about 160-200 eggs.
