Nature gave man an incredible array of herbs and fruitful plants to strengthen and restore health, to preserve youth and beauty. Many of them are known for a long time, but they continue to amaze today with their miraculous properties.

These invaluable gifts include Centella Asiatic. Its other names are tiger grass, thyroid and Gotu kola. This is a perennial creeping plant of the umbrella family, which was opened to the world by Ayurvedic medicine more than three thousand years ago. Due to a rather extensive range of beneficial properties, this herb is used not only for medicinal purposes.

Description and distribution

Centella Asiatic (Gotu Kola) is easily recognizable. In nature, it is found along ditches and in marshes, spreads over the ground along small ground, has small, rounded, bud-like leaves on short petioles with a voluminous hole and inconspicuous yellowish (reddish) flowers. The Centella Asiatic, despite the geographic prefix, is distributed not only in Asia, but also in Northern Australia, Papua - New Guinea. In Asia, it can be found in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

According to popular opinion of biologists, the observation of the animal world contributed to the discovery of the medicinal plant. So, for example, Asian tigers, having received wounds during a fight with an enemy, on a hunt or experiencing internal ailments, found thickets of centelles and literally rolled on them with their backs. It is probably from here that the plant got its other name - tiger grass.

Growing up

The plant is unpretentious in the care and does not require feeding, fertilizer, loves wet low places. Most often it grows wildly, but it is easy to reclaim. In nature, the plant reaches a height of no more than three centimeters, in private areas with moderate fertility of the soil can grow up to 15 cm. Centella is able to quickly and strongly grow and seize other plots of land. So that it does not turn into a weed, it is necessary to thin out the shoots periodically.

In the absence of a plot, Centella Asiatic can be grown as a houseplant. This will require a wide low pot with drainage holes, maintaining the moisture of the earthy coma and the absence of direct sunlight.

The healing properties of Centella Asiatica have long been known. If earlier it was used only for treating colds and fast healing of wounds, today the range of useful qualities has expanded significantly. Among the main ones are anti-aging, moisturizing, healing, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and firming effects.

The extract of Centella Asiatica (centella asiatica) activates collagen synthesis in the dermis, increases blood microcirculation and skin regeneration, and smooths wrinkles. Ayurvedic medicine ascribes anti-bacterial properties to Centelle of Asian, which help in regulating the body's metabolic processes and fighting infections, as well as strengthening and stimulating the action against brain and nerve cells.

Ointments with Centella extract are effective for venous lymphatic insufficiency and slow cicatrization, for trophic ulcers, abrasions, wounds and minor burns.

History reference

The birthplace of the Centella Asiatic is the subtropics of the Indian Ocean. Locals from ancient times use the plant as a remedy. Ceylon residents have seen more than once how elephants eat this seemingly nondescript plant, and even Bengal tigers often roll in pain at the Asian leaf dam. Hence the name "tiger grass". In Chinese legend, it is referred to as Fo-Tl-Tieng. Herbal Professor Lee Chun Yun constantly drank tea with Centella leaves and lived for 256 years.

Scientific interest in the healing properties of the plant arose in the middle of the 19th century. Spanish and French doctors used “tiger grass” to treat leprosy and lymphedema. In 1941, the extract of the plant was isolated.

Technology of growing and harvesting Centella

Centella, besides growing in the wild, is successfully cultivated artificially.

Centella is not demanding on soil fertility. The main thing is that it always contains a sufficient amount of available moisture, and it was not very acidic. Medium-fertile light loam or sandy soils are most suitable for tiger grass.

It is better to locate the Centella plot away from the beds with cultivated plants, in the shade of trees, walls of buildings, near artificial reservoirs or drainage ditches.

Care is a constant watering during the drying of the topsoil in dry years.

The weed control in plantings is irrelevant - the tiger grass, despite the small height of its stem, very quickly takes up all the space around it, preventing other plants from developing normally. Because of such aggressiveness, it is necessary to monitor the centella plantations, not allowing it to grow beyond the plots.

Choosing a landing site

It is possible to grow Centella in pots and open ground, in light shade, avoiding direct sunlight, especially in the middle of the day.

Centella tolerates warm winters well, if in your region there are other climatic conditions, it must be transported to a room. In early spring, when the risk of frost is still high, it needs to be covered with a film.

Breeding

Centella is propagated by Asian seeds or ground shoots. When planting seeds, keep in mind that in such a way it is better to propagate in a greenhouse or at home in pots, and replant already grown seedlings.

  1. Choose a place for a pot.
  2. Prepare the soil, fill it with water
  3. Put a seed, lightly press it, the depth should not interfere with the seedlings.
  4. The time of germination of seedlings - from 1 month to six months, depending on the season and temperature.
  5. For planting in open ground, select a place, loosen the soil.
  6. Dig a hole 2 times the size of the roots.
  7. Lay out peat and compost.
  8. Tamp the earth a little, pour it abundantly.
  9. Transfer the seedlings, sprinkle with earth.

Ground shoots Gotu Cola breeds independently.

Collecting and harvesting

To get the maximum effect from the plant, it is harvested before flowering begins - in early spring. For this purpose, the centella is dug out entirely, along with the roots, leaves and stems.

Dried the plant without access to sunlight, avoiding high temperatures, then crushed.

It is necessary to store the prepared raw materials in a dark, dry, warm (but not hot) place up to 2 years.

Pests, diseases and prevention

Known pests of the Centella Asiatic plants are not striking, problems may arise if:

  1. The plant is not watered enough - dry soil is the enemy of the plant, it can dry out.
  2. The plant has been subjected to the influence of low temperatures - freezing also damages the thyroid and leads to its death.
  3. The soil is too acidic, depleted - the growth of tiger grass in such conditions becomes more complicated.
  4. In the area where Gotu Cola grows, there is no shadow at all - the plant will get burns.
  5. It is not warm and humid in the place where the seeds are planted - the thyroid seeds sprout only when the necessary conditions are met, otherwise the germination period is increased.

To avoid this, follow the specified breeding recommendations.

Thus, Centella Asiatic has long been known to residents of Asian countries as a tasty seasoning, additive in cosmetic products and an effective drug. Many interesting legends have long formed around her.

Today, you can feel the effect of this plant far from its homeland, taking dietary supplements based on it, using cosmetic means or growing it yourself.

Seeds can be in the soil for a long time. Of course, they can wait for the most favorable conditions for germination. You can sow seeds in a greenhouse. However, even in such conditions, it is necessary to ensure that the soil is well breathable.

When planting seeds in the ground, you need to push them a little into the ground. The term of emergence of shoots is relatively long. Plants can be transplanted into wetlands. There must be a bit of compost in the pits. Cola grows even in water and can float on its surface. It must be remembered that overdrying the soil is deadly.

Centella is a very useful plant for people suffering from a whole bunch of diseases. And if you take drugs from a grassy plant correctly and carefully, you can soon achieve a striking effect. If there are doubts about the beneficial effect, you can always consult a doctor.
