General information

How to plant a cactus at home?

Cacti are becoming increasingly popular for growing at home. The plant is unpretentious in the care and resistant to drought, even if you forget to water it, the cactus will not experience discomfort.

How to choose a cactus

There are several most adapted and favorite flower growers of plant species for indoor conditions.

Echinopsis - spherical cactus, well propagated by children, produced by the mother plant. This is a blooming look.

Cereus - a tall cactus with multicolored spines, a few lateral sprouts grow on the main trunk. The plant practically does not bloom, propagates by seeds or cuttings.

Prickly pear robusta - flat-shaped cactus with elongated bristles, grows quickly and reaches large sizes. Propagated by cuttings.

Mummily - cactus tolerates the lack of moisture, spherical, not ribbed. Blooming pretty bells.

Phyllocactus - this is a leaf-like plant, which does not have nevertheless leaf plates, the leaf resembles the trunk of a cactus. The cactus with the right care in the home blooms with large flowers.

Choosing a variety that you like, pay attention to the appearance of the plant: it should not be mechanically damaged. Check also for insects or suspicious stains. Check with the seller conditions in the store.

Choosing a place for cactus

It is important to understand how to grow a cactus at home, what place the plant is most suitable. Cultivators divide cacti into two large groups: desert and forest.

  • Desert plants are more suitable southern window sills, they love sunny color.
  • Forest cacti are more comfortable on the eastern and northern windows, direct sunlight can burn the plant.
Both groups are united by the fact that full shadow equally harms them. In the shade cacti deform and do not bloom, if they are flowering, and may even die. From spring to autumn, up to the rest period, the cactus can be located on the balcony, in the open air.

Choosing a cactus pot

Before planting a cactus in a pot, it is necessary to determine the capacity for it. The choice of the pot should be taken seriously, given the characteristics of the form.

The volume of the tank should not be much more than the expanded root system of the plant. Ariokarpus cactus needs a deeper pot, and a mummily - with a large volume, because it has many children. The size and volume of the pot depend on the size and shape of the root system of the plant. For the roots of short but branched need a wide and low pot, long roots - narrow and deep.

Pot shape

The shape of the pot for the plant does not matter. But for your own convenience it is better to purchase a square or rectangular container - this will significantly save space with a large number of plants.

At the bottom of the tank you need to put high-quality drainage - this is important in the care of cacti at home. You can use coarse sand or small river pebbles. Drainage material is divided into two parts: one is placed on the bottom, the second - after a layer of soil on the surface.

The optimal composition of the soil is selected individually for each species. Cacti at a young age is suitable soil with a lime impurity, adult plants - peat. As part of the soil for prickly plants, it is desirable to use leafy, soddy soil and sand. The quality of the soil depends on the health of the root system of the plant; in dense and heavy mixtures, the moisture will stagnate, leading to rotting of the roots.

Planting and transplanting cactus

Consider how to transplant cactus after purchase. It is better to buy the plant in spring, as the best time for planting and transplanting is April-May. Carefully remove the seedling of the purchased plant from the pot, clean it from the ground. Plant roots need to hold for twenty minutes in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Then dry well. From the old soil is better to get rid of. Lay a layer of soil on the drainage layer, straighten the roots, sprinkle with soil and lightly tamp. Water the plant and wait until the soil has settled slightly, add more soil and top layer of drainage. Novice flower growers are wondering whether it is necessary to replant the cactus after purchase? In stores, cacti are most often found in peat. Without the addition of turf land, peat will retain moisture too much, and this is detrimental to the root system of the plant. Large species of cacti are replanted every two years, the rest of the plants are subjected to the procedure every three years. At respectable age, cacti are transplanted with full replacement of the soil. When transplanting, the pot is changed to a larger or wide one.

Watering cactus

Let's figure out how to water the cactus at home. Frequent watering require plants contained in a hot and dry place. In the summer, cacti need to be watered once a day in the morning. Plants in small pots need to be sprayed, on cloudy days do not spend watering. For watering cacti use boiled water, preferably at room temperature.

Fertilizer and dressing

For fertilizing cacti it is better to use humic liquid preparations. These dressings contain all the useful elements necessary for the plant, ensuring both growth and development. Cactus is fertilized twice: before the formation of buds and during flowering.

From March to October, forest cacti are fertilized once a week (10 ml of the preparation per liter of water). For desert cacti make a lower concentration of the drug (5 ml per two liters of water). In the winter, do not contribute to top dressing.

Light and temperature

Lighting in the growth and development of cacti plays a big role. These are sun-loving plants, their content should be well lit most of the day. The plant growing on the northern window-sills should be illuminated with artificial light. LWhen there is a large amount of dust, especially in urban environments, cacti should be protected with a film dome. Young plants do not put in direct sunlight: delicate spines and shell will burn.

Cactus reproduction

Some species of cacti live for hundreds of years, and the collection of these plants can be passed on from generation to generation for a long time, if properly cared for at home. Any collection begins with the first instance, and in the case of plants, it can be obtained in several ways:

  • purchase an adult plant, sometimes even a flowering one,
  • to buy children - shoots broken off from an adult cactus,
  • cut from the mature plant tip - stalk.

If the plant breeds with a process, the baby is carefully separated from the parent organism with a knife. For the growth of its roots, it must be planted in damp ground to a small depth.

The stalk is already quite wet, so it can take root in the sand. After the plant has taken root, it is transplanted into a separate pot.

Excess moisture should be avoided to prevent decay. To do this, cut off part of an adult plant must be slightly dried before planting in a pot for rooting.

Replanting cactus

An adult plant or a rooted bone must be planted in a larger pot for active growth and root spreading. Choose a new home pet is very simple.

  • The diameter of the pot should slightly exceed the size of the stem - although wild plants take root in a huge area around them, the home-living succulent cannot boast a powerful root system - there is enough water and nutrients without it.
  • The pot material can be any - besides the traditional clay versions, popular models from polystyrene, which have a cubic shape.
  • It is advisable to choose the color of the pot to be light so that the ground in it is less heated.

You can pick up and improved version - a pot with a retractable bottom, which will help to gently remove the plant when re-transplanting.

Before you plant a cactus, you need to prepare the dishes for it. The bottom should be filled with a small layer of drainage, which will allow water to freely pass through the holes and not accumulate in the soil, causing rotting of the plant roots.

Transplantation can not be done during the flowering period of the plant.

Land selection

For the cactus is not suitable for any land. In order for the plant to be strong and healthy, the soil must have all the necessary nutrients, not to let in excess moisture and air. In addition, a weakly acidic medium must be maintained in the pot.

The easiest way to acquire specialized land for a particular type of succulent. It consists of the following substances, selected in optimal proportions:

  • purified river sand,
  • brick baby
  • humus from leaves and sod,
  • peat,
  • nutritional supplements.

This will create ideal conditions for the growth and development of the cactus. However, good results can be achieved by mixing simple ingredients at home in a 1: 1 ratio:

  • sand - river, coarse (1–2 mm), thoroughly washed,
  • cleaned land with small lumps,
  • humus.

To create a weakly acidic environment, peat is added, the proportion of which should be two times less than the proportion of sand. The finished mixture is treated with hot steam, which will kill various parasites.

There is no need to change the land - the composition of the earthen mixture should be relatively constant throughout the life of the cactus. The only caveat - dressing, which is carried out in the presence of problems with the plant.

Features care for the cactus

Properly planting a cactus is not enough for its long and happy life - you need to carefully look after it, water it in time, follow the rules of placement and protect it from diseases. What features has growing succulents at home?

Fertilizers for cacti have one important feature - they contain a small amount of nitrogen. If standard fertilizers are used, the plant will begin to grow too actively from excess nitrogen, its stem will elongate too quickly, it will weaken. On the surface of the stem will begin to appear wounds that can rot.

Cacti need the following inorganic substances:

Liquid fertilizer "Cactus" contains all the necessary trace elements, as well as vitamins and organic acids that protect the plant from diseases. The fertilizer is sold in the form of a concentrate, and already at home it is diluted in the amount of 8-10 ml per liter of water. Top dressing is carried out in the period of growth through watering. In winter, the land should not be fertilized.

Watering rules

Water cacti need soft, purified water. Suitable, filtered or boiled water will do. Water temperature should not be below room temperature.

The frequency of watering during the growth period is the same as that of other plants, as the land in the pot dries. On hot days, watering is not necessary so that the sun does not burn the cactus. In winter, it is enough to water once a month.

Where to put the cactus?

It is widely believed that succulents absorb radiation from a computer and other electrical appliances - this is not true, if there is harm from a computer, plants suffer from it no less than people. This does not mean that planting a cactus near the monitor is a bad idea. The main thing is to have enough sunlight.

Despite the fact that wild cacti grow in deserts, you do not need to put a plant pot next to the battery, trying to provide it with a desert atmosphere at home. In winter, the heat is all the more unnecessary - for the period of hibernation, it is advisable to put the cactus in a cool lighted place, the ideal temperature is about 15 degrees.

Planting a cactus and taking care of it is quite simple, so it will surely please its owner every year with beautiful flowers and new processes. The main thing is not to forget to water it in time, especially in winter, when he needs water very rarely.

Failure to care for and grow cacti at home can lead to the death of the plant. Among the most typical hazards are damage by pests and diseases, unfavorable wintering conditions, or the appearance of mold due to excess moisture. To avoid mold, the pan and bottom of the pot are periodically cleaned and washed.

The technology of proper cultivation and care of cacti at home

The experience of growing and caring for cacti, familiarity with the relevant literature leads to a paradoxical conclusion: almost all cacti (like the overwhelming majority of other succulents) cannot be counted among the indoor plants proper. Of course, growing and caring for homemade cacti can be done in rooms — as millions of people do, but at the same time, first, you have to change the usual indoor conditions (highlight the plants, isolate them from dry and warm air, etc.) secondly, cacti admirers still use every opportunity to “expel” their pets from the window sills to the will (out-of-window greenhouses, balconies, hotbeds), and thirdly - and this is the most important thing - it’s impossible to grow full-fledged specimens of most species . Only rare representatives of cacti owing to their biological features seemed sufficiently adapted to the conditions of the dwelling and, therefore, they became common in room floriculture.

In temperate climates (Europe, North America, Japan), where ornamental succulent cultivation is most developed, the best results are obtained in greenhouses, but many species are grown all year round in open ground (even in northern Europe and in Canada).

Thus, there are three main directions of cultivation of cacti and other succulents for decorative purposes - indoor, greenhouse and garden. Each of them involves its own, specific agricultural practices.

It is important to note that, no matter how different the methods of growing cacti in home or other conditions, they are all based on a few common biological features of these plants. This is, above all, slow growth and its pronounced frequency. Virtually all cacti, even giant treelike Cereus and lush epiphytic bushes with leaf-like shoots, grow relatively slowly in nature. Neither their root system, nor stem tissues are able to quickly absorb a large amount of nutrients and water from the environment, and consequently, they cannot quickly form a growth. In addition, regardless of the place of natural growth, almost all cacti have pronounced periods of growth, flowering and, most importantly, rest.

The correct methods of growing cacti at home take into account primarily these particular traits. It is curious that the venerable cacti growers sometimes argue fiercely, defending their often diametrically opposed ways of maintaining and growing their favorite plants, but usually the disputing parties have equally good collections, since their different methods are still based on an understanding of the nature of cacti. But most failures are due precisely to ignorance of this nature.

In general, cacti farming has accumulated a huge number of different rules, recommendations, methods and technologies for growing cacti, in addition, different rules and recommendations often contradict each other (especially regarding the content during periods of rest, the composition of substrates, watering, germination of seeds). It cannot be said that the formal methods are wrong, but, when evaluating them, we must bear in mind two circumstances.

First of allBefore growing cacti at home, keep in mind that in nature these plants are plastic to a certain extent. Most of them can grow in markedly different conditions. One and the same species can be found, for example, in the crown of a tropical forest, and on bare, sun-drenched rocks. It is this ability that allowed many species to spread widely around the world (for example, the notorious conquest of the world by the Opuntia). Further, the needs of cacti vary noticeably with age, and what is unacceptable for a two-, three-year-old seedling is quite suitable for a veteran plant (and vice versa). In addition, like other plants, cacti get used to certain conditions (for example, it is possible to train them to tolerate stronger sun light or lower temperatures by hardening).

SecondlyWhen studying information on how to properly care for cacti, do not forget that, like any living organisms, these plants do not react to any particular environmental factor (temperature, humidity, etc.), but to a complex of these factors. Adding humus to the soil mixture under some conditions of irrigation, illumination and temperature can lead to the quick death of plants, and under others - to ensure excellent development.

Each serious cacti starter has its own set of practical methods of care for cacti at home, and each such set has certain advantages and disadvantages. But, of course, there are some general principles of growing cacti, and unacceptable methods.

How to grow cacti at home: the choice of location

Before you can grow cacti, you need to choose a suitable place for them. In the room, cacti always lack light and are too warm during the winter dormancy. In addition, even for these drought-resistant plants room air is rather dry. Therefore, the best place for them in the house is on the windowsill of the sunniest window, closer to the glass (glass, of course, must be clean).

Как видно на фото, при уходе за домашними кактусами ставить растения нужно у нижней части окна:

Если на окне сооружены полки, то растениям на верхних полках достается только боковое освещение, что приводит к уродливому искривлению стеблей. Typically, this placement of cacti does not cause technical problems, since most other plants do not compete with them for this - near the glass itself.

Problems arise when the fascination with succulents becomes so serious that, due to dozens or even hundreds of pots with hedgehogs, there are not enough suitable places in the rooms. Then for the proper care of cacti plants can be placed in the house only for the winter period, and in the spring and autumn time to find the opportunity to place them outside the apartment (in the greenhouse at the cottage, on the balcony, in the outside window hothouse). In the period of winter dormancy, the abundance of light to most cacti is not so important, and they can be kept near the northern windows, on the upper windows, and even in full shadow.

What pot is needed for a home cactus

Deciding to start breeding succulents, you need to imagine what pots are needed for cacti. The main requirement for capacity for planting succulent plants - matching the size of the root system. The pot should not significantly exceed its volume in the expanded form, as a rule, choose the capacity of a much smaller volume. If a plant has shallow roots that stretch widely near the surface of the substrate, it needs a relatively flat pot. In the same flat boxes (flat dishes) usually sow cacti and planted seedlings. Conversely, cacti with deepening, especially rod and turn-shaped, roots need a deeper dish.

The nature and development of the root system during transplantation of cacti will be estimated by a non-specialist, but it is better to consult reference books. Of course, when planting relatively fast-growing cacti (large prickly pears, echinopsis, crossworms, epiphytes), the dishes may be more capacious - “for growth”.

Which pots for cacti are used most often? Usually for these plants take plastic pots. But this is not a dogma. Pottery is also widely used, and you can use dishes from other natural and artificial materials. It is only important to imagine the possible consequences.

One of the features of cactus care is that the state of the substrate in plastic and clay pots under completely identical conditions will be different (in an earthenware pot, naturally, it dries out faster and cools more strongly after watering). At the same time, in some cases, quick drying is a plus (for example, during winter irrigation and for cacti with sensitive roots), in others - a minus (for young, rooting plants or when irrigating in hot weather).

Which pot is better to choose for the cactus

For a long time, answering the question “which pot of cactus is better”, experienced cacti operators answered that planting these plants requires rectangular containers that are convenient for more dense installation of succulents. However, the trends of modern design gradually lead to the return of round dishes. Indeed, a spherical plant in a rectangular pot does not look perfect. Round pots have functional advantages: firstly, both the aboveground part of the cactus and its root system develop in all directions, filling the pot more evenly, secondly, with a tight installation, there is a lot of space between the round pots, which provides a more favorable moisture regime and air exchange, than in the case of standing rectangular containers.

When deciding which pot to choose for a cactus, do not forget that almost all succulents, even the most moisture-loving, do not like stagnant water. Therefore, pots for cacti should have reliable drainage holes. Many kaktusovody make them in several pieces in the bottom, sometimes capturing the side walls.

Rapid flow of water occurs in pots with a retractable bottom, they are also convenient for transplanting plants. Retractable bottom is easy to build in any pot, putting on the main bottom a shard or a plastic plate slightly smaller than the main bottom, size. Small legs under the external bottom help to avoid stagnation of water in the lower part of the pot. Epiphytic cacti are particularly sensitive to deficiencies in drainage (that is, to stagnant water). For them, you can use the "Orchid" dishes (ampelnoe baskets).

It was noticed that with free care for cacti at home, the succulents grow better and faster if they are planted together in a single container. Of course, this selects neighbors that require similar care. In this case, the conditions of development of the root system partly approach the natural ones, and the biological environment, chemical composition, water and gas conditions of the substrate become more stable.

Pay attention to the photo - with decent care for cacti at home, such groups are very decorative:

In many ways, such groups facilitate the care of plants. Collective plantings and purely collectible cultivation of cacti do not contradict - co-planted plants representing forms of the same species or closely related species of the same genus, each with its own label, are quite an acceptable and convenient form of the content of the collection. However, it is necessary to imagine the disadvantages of such a landing: difficulties of transplanting and manipulating plants - they are almost impossible to move, take pictures, donate, sell, exchange, quarantine or treat one by one, separately from the rest.

The selection of dishes, of course, must meet the aesthetic requirements. Too bright or fancy pots interfere with the perception of the beauty of the plant itself. The cacti standing in different-type and multi-colored pots look ridiculous next to each other. It is bad if the color of the pot is not combined with the color of the cactus flower, but the color of the container also has a functional meaning: the black color that is strict and neutral for the plant's perception causes the roots to overheat in the sun, and white, on the contrary, reflects the sun's rays.

In recent years, pot-shaped receptacles in which a plant pot is inserted are becoming more common. It is important to observe two conditions: the edges of the pots should not be significantly higher than the edges of the pot with cactus, and water should not be in the pots.

It is convenient to place pots with cacti in common pallets. They are easy to irrigate from the bottom, as well as carry plants. If the pallet has high sides, the pots standing in it can be covered with a coarse-grained substrate (pebbles, expanded clay, etc.). Such external drainage prevents them from drying out too quickly (which is important especially when using clay pots), overheating or overcooling of the roots. In addition, this technique will make a group of cacti more decorative.

How to properly care for cacti at home: feeding and fertilizer

On the use of fertilizers for cacti in cacti farming there are diametrically opposed views - from their complete negation to the mandatory use. In the literature there are a variety of recipes for nutritional formulations for feeding cacti at home, but there is practically no experimental evidence that a particular substance (mixture) is really necessary or gives the best results.

We must not forget that cacti is not a one-year, but a perennial culture. On perennial crops, the individual effects of fertilizers for cacti at home are usually not traced. Again, we emphasize that to grow an unusually large, wildly flourishing, monstrously paged specimen, which does not exist in nature, is not at all an achievement! Collectible (and aesthetic) value of such plants is low. But since cacti in collections are in conditions that are completely unnatural for them, fertilizers are not prohibited in principle.

Different compositions are used, which are also used for other indoor plants, but with a few reservations: much less often - usually 1-2 times during the whole growing season, in a lower concentration, with a relatively lower nitrogen content and preferably mineral. Organic fertilizers and top dressing for cacti at home in the form of relatively weak (compared to those used for other plants) solutions can be applied only under hardy, fast-growing large-flowered succulents.

Planting cactus

No matter how the cactus appears in the house (it was acquired by a plant in a store or from other gardeners, it multiplies by itself), it is impossible to avoid planting in a permanent pot.

Choose the right pot

It should be chosen, given the characteristics of cacti. For many adult plants, it is recommended to use clay, but not glazed containers.

Clay passes air to the roots, providing them with oxygen, and absorbs moisture. Because of this, the earth dries out faster, and when watering cools faster. This is important for wetting in winter.

Plastic capacity does not allow to evaporate to water and prevents salinization of the soil. Newly rooted young plants are recommended to be transplanted to such pots.

But in the bottoms of all pots, it is imperative to make drainage holes so that the excess water flowed into the pan.

The height of the pot is determined by the root system. He should not be much bigger than her. For a cactus with small roots fits low wide pot, and for plants with rod-shaped root - deeper.

Vases are planted before planting: they must be washed with the addition of antibacterial agents. The clay pots inside are covered with boiling water, then dried.

A layer of drainage is placed in the prepared container and filled with the prepared substrate. Then they plant a plant. How to transplant cactus at home?

The right substrate for cacti

The composition of the soil is prepared for each species in accordance with its characteristics.

But common to all of these plants are such components of the soil as leaf earth and washed river sand in equal volumes.

Peat and charcoal are added to make the soil loose and air permeable.

For some species of young cacti, limestone admixture is recommended.

The health of the roots depends on how well the soil is prepared, whether they will rot or mold or not.

How best to plant cactus

This should be done in the spring. After a drainage from coarse sand or medium-sized claydite is laid at the bottom of the pot, fill the pot by three-quarters with soil.

In it, lower the roots of the plant.

After that, sprinkle them, adding another substrate to the top of the tank. Sprinkle with river sand or small stones on top so that the soil does not trap excessive moisture.

Before transplanting cacti at home, be sure to clean the roots of the old soil and remove dead or sick parts. Put the cactus in an empty container (without land), keep warm for some time, so that the wounds on the roots, obtained during their processing, healed.

Some growers also use a special bath for prevention. Cut out a cardboard stand, in the middle of which make a hole for the roots. The roots of a cactus placed on such a stand are dipped through a hole in the water with a temperature + 50-55 for 15-20 minutes. Then the plant is dried for several days. After the above steps, you can start landing.

Mandatory requirement of this stage of care at home for the cactus: sanitize any used soil before planting. In the process of sterilization, spores of soil fungi and larvae of harmful insects will die.

Disinfection can be done in the oven, microwave, on the stove.

Care after transplant

How to care for cacti at home after transplanting?

It is impossible to water just transplanted plant. After the stress caused by the transplant, the roots should dry out and harden. Wet soil will cause rotting roots.

Water the transplanted healthy plant should be about a week after the procedure.

If the roots are treated before transplanting, arrange watering even later - after 10 days.

The first watering should not be abundant, and the water must be heated (degrees to 50). In addition, the cactus is best experienced in the penumbra rooting time after transplantation. Light is needed a lot, but without direct sunlight.

Independent breeding cacti

At home, reproduction is done by stalks or children, depending on the type of plant.

The easiest way to propagate those cacti in which children often form on their trunks.

These processes are easily detached. They already have the beginnings of the root system, so after planting in a separate container with the ground, the children quickly root. In a few weeks they are already going up.

But before planting, it is recommended to remove the remains of the mother plant and dry it in a dry and warm place.

For propagation using cuttings overgrown trunk, which is cut off with a disinfected knife. Slice the remaining part of the barrel to dry and sprinkle with charcoal powder. Dry stalks dry weekly.

Then it is planted in the ground, the surface of which is sprinkled with large river sand. Having deepened a shank on 1 centimeter, it is tied up and covered with a glass jar. Until the final rooting is allowed only to moisten the sand. When watering the sprout will die from rotting.

One more rooting method of cactus - using disinfected foam rubber. A piece of this material is placed in a jar or glass, moistened. The water slightly covers the surface. Install the stalk and cover with cellophane.

Water should not dry before the roots grow. When they grow up, transplant the cuttings into the soil and grow them in a permanent pot.

Before planting babies or cuttings must be treated from pests.

How to water the plants

One of the main conditions for the care of cactus plants is their proper watering. Excess moisture leads to their death.

Irrigation rules are simple:

  • water should not fall on the trunk of a cactus,
  • pour water, the temperature of which is not lower than 12 degrees,
  • in the summer to do watering with softened water, the rest of the time to arrange irrigation.

It is in the right watering is actually growing and caring for cacti. Purified water is desirable. If there is a possibility - use rain or thawed. In other cases - boiled and settled.

Water during the growing season - from late spring to early autumn. Water in winter, these plants are not needed if they are kept in a cool place.

Flower growers have made a special calendar in which they painted everything that needs to be done to care for cacti in each month of the year.

Cacti: care at home in different periods of the year

In the first month of spring, they begin to take care of the fact that the plant is “awakened”: first they start spraying, then watering.

Spraying is done in the morning for the first time every three to four days, later adjusted to once a day.

When “reviving” the cactus, it is accustomed to sunlight again after resting. When flower buds appear, stop watering again and return to spraying with warm water.

In April, make a cactus transplant, if the pot for the plant became small. Before that, they do not water for several days, so that the earth dries out and crumbles well from the roots.

Young individuals are transplanted once a year, and adults - every few years, as needed.

In late spring and in the first month of summer, watering becomes intense, the plants are best taken out on the balcony, terrace or garden.

At the height of summer - in July it is recommended to provide penumbra to cacti and water no more than once a week.

From the end of the summer, from August to the end of September, watering is gradually reduced, the cacti are treated with pesticides.

The last two months of autumn to keep cacti on the balcony until the temperature drops below +3 degrees. In case of more severe cold conditions, it is necessary to arrange them in a cool place in the house for the winter and to control the temperature. And at the end of winter to check the health of the plant, the appearance of pests, whether there are seedlings.

Flowering cacti

How to care for a cactus to make it bloom? These plants bloom when they are properly cared for.

Flowering occurs at rest time, in the cold months. This is preceded by several stages of preparation for such an event.

Throughout the growing season, until September, cacti are regularly fed with calcium phosphate-potassium fertilizer.

There are also special organic fertilizers for cacti. They are rich in essential micronutrients. Feeding them during the growing season will increase the late flowering time.

If the cactus blooms in winter, it is not fertilized.

A lot of light and heat in the summer - a prerequisite for the future of the flower. And in the period of flowering (dormancy) it is imperative to provide plenty and fresh air in abundance.

In addition, experienced cacti growers believe that the secret of good flowering lies in a close pot: it stimulates the appearance of buds.

If you meet all the conditions of care for cacti at home, they will become a real decoration of the house.
