General information

Diamond Eggplant: basic characteristics and growing principles

Eggplant is a very common vegetable crop with a large variety of varieties. The differences between them are mainly in the form of fruits, color and taste of the pulp, as well as in terms of ripening. The mid-season eggplant variety diamond is very popular with gardeners. If you wanted to try growing eggplants on your plot, stop your choice at Almaz. Its advantages are high yield, resistance to pests and the taste of fruit pulp.

Description of the variety.

Eggplant diamond - a long-established, proven experience and time grade. It is universal when planting: in warm latitudes it is grown in an open area, and in colder areas - in greenhouses and greenhouses. The height of the plant is quite high - about 60 cm, but the fruits grow compactly on the lower part of the stem, up to 30 cm from the ground. There are no thorns on the eggplant cup, which significantly reduces the risk of hitting your hands during harvest.

An important advantage of "Almaz" is its high yield. The average number of harvested vegetables per square meter of planting is about eight kilograms. Fruits in the shape of a cylinder grow from 14 cm to 18 cm long and about 5 to 6 cm in diameter. The average weight of one eggplant 130-140 gr. Technical ripeness of vegetables is determined by the dark purple color. The pulp of eggplant is dense, greenish, without bitterness.

"Diamond" is resistant to stolbur (phytoplasmosis) and mosaic virus. It tolerates fungal diseases with moderate persistence, such as fusarium, late blight and top rot of the fruit. Eggplants are distinguished by good transportability, intended for use in cooking as snacks, salads, hot dishes, and also canned food.

Eggplants can be grown in two ways: using seedlings and seedless, i.e. immediately from the seeds.

Transplanting. Seedlings begin to engage in the last days of winter or in early March. Seeds are sown in boxes or, in order not to damage the roots during handling, into separate bags or pots.

Seedlings grown in separate containers, when transplanting, take root much faster, yields a higher yield and 2-3 weeks earlier than the same seedlings from the common box.

The soil should be soft, nutritious and loose (a mixture of turf, sand, peat and fertilizer). Seed containers are plentifully watered with water, covered with polyethylene and set aside for 10 days in a warm (about + 25ºС) place. After germination, the temperature must be reduced to + 15ºС. It is necessary for the formation of a strong root system. Every 14-16 days shoots need to be fed. A solution of urea is suitable for this (per liter of water is 15-20 g.). After two or two and a half months, the seedlings will get strong enough and will be ready for landing in the ground.

For open ground suitable seedlings with 4-5 leaves. Planted in a well-lit area in the soil, well composted. Before planting, seedlings are watered abundantly. Between the rows they adhere to a distance of up to 60 cm, between the holes 35-40 cm. For planting in greenhouses, young plants should be more mature, with 6-7 leaves. The landing pattern is the same as on an open piece of land.

Seedless method. Sowing should be soaked in water or already germinated seeds in a soil heated to 15ºС. Sowing density - 3-4 gr. seeds per 10 sq. 2.

Experienced gardeners sow radishes along with eggplants, which will later protect the shoots from weeds.

Overgrown eggplant shoots eventually break through, leaving more mature and strong plants with a distance of 20 -30 cm from each other.

Care for eggplants.

Growing diamond eggplants from the cultivation of other varieties of this vegetable is no different. After planting, it is recommended to carry out regular watering every 3 days, and during the dry period and every day. The focus in the care of young plants is given to weeding from weeds and loosening the soil. The first time you can feed in 18 - 20 days after planting with a solution of urea. The second time is fed after another three to four weeks with the same solution with the addition of superphosphate. When the first fruits appear, it is better to feed a solution of mullein.

Bushes need to be formed in a timely manner: three stems are sufficient for optimal size, all other shoots break off. Since the eggplant diamond itself is quite a heavy vegetable, the bushes must be tied up. Very often, eggplant bushes suffer from Colorado beetles, so you need to regularly inspect shoots, remove the pest and its eggs. If there is no time for this, you can treat the plants with a solution of chlorophos (per 10-liter bucket of water 30 grams of funds) or another insecticide.

"Diamond" is really a universal grade, and the description of its qualities is not exaggerated at all. These are eggplants with excellent taste, dense pulp, fruitful and unpretentious. Of these, you can cook a huge number of varied, tasty and nutritious dishes, especially if these vegetables are collected from their beds.

Store eggplant Diamond best in the refrigerator. It is possible in boxes in the cellar at a fairly low temperature and the presence of a ventilation system. The Diamond grade is used for preparation of various dishes, conservation, frosts.

Diamond Eggplant Description

Eggplant diamond. Recommendations for growing

Diamond belongs to mid-season varieties of crops, can be grown both in open and closed ground, it all depends on the region and climatic features. From sprouting sprout to full ripening, about 120-150 days pass, depending on the soil in which the crop is planted. Under adverse climatic conditions, it is recommended to plant seedlings in greenhouses or greenhouses. Diamond is resistant to drought, shows excellent yield in the northern regions.

Seedlings and adult bushes are resistant to mosaic and stolbur.

Eggplant Leaf Mosaic

The height of the bush does not exceed 55-60 cm. During the growing season, the bushes are distinguished by early and amicable branching, which affects the good formation of the crop. The leaves of the plant have a green color with green and purple veins. Fruits are formed on the bottom of the bush, eggplant cups do not have thorns, which simplifies the collection of ripe fruits.

The variety has a high yield, under favorable conditions it is possible to get up to 8 kg of fruit per square meter. Ripe fruits have a thick and durable skin that allows you to transport the crop over long distances.

What you need to know before planting eggplant

Eggplants are light and heat-loving plants. The optimum air temperature for normal development and high crop yields should be 20-25 degrees. When the air temperature is too low, plants tend to shed flowers and leaves, which adversely affects the future yield. It is also contraindicated for culture and too high a temperature - plants slow down growth.

Culture feels good on mineral-rich soil. Not too in need of phosphorus, since the long roots well absorb the mineral from the soil, but the presence of potassium and nitrogen in the top dressing should be necessary.

A distinctive feature of the culture is that eggplants do not need too long a day of light. The norm for them is no more than 14 hours a day, it is precisely at this rate that the most active flowering and fruiting are noted. To obtain maximum yield, the following method is used: a frame of a black opaque film is constructed over the greenhouse or film arch. This frame is shown to shoot at 12 o'clock so that the plants get their norm of light. For example, you can open the eggplant from 8 am to 7 pm.

Preparing eggplant seeds for planting

Eggplant seeds "Diamond"

The variety Almaz has a high seed content in the fruit, so many amateur vegetable growers independently stock up with seed from the previous crop.

To obtain good germination seeds should be carefully prepared.

Characteristics and description of the variety

Diamond eggplant variety is quite old. He was bred by Soviet breeders in 1983. However, it has not lost its relevance today. Diamond eggplant seeds with approximately the same characteristics can be found at many manufacturers. They are willing to buy for cultivation in different regions of Russia.

Diamond refers to the mid-season varieties of eggplants for open ground and greenhouses. However, to grow this heat-loving crop in a garden can only residents of the south of the country, in the northern regions will need a protective shelter. Depending on the growing conditions and climate, from the moment of emergence to the collection of the first fruits in the stage of technical maturity, 110-150 days pass. Fruiting plants for a long time - you can shoot the fruit every 8-10 days.

In the description of the variety Almaz it is indicated that it is compact, of medium plant height with the height of bushes up to 60 cm. Differs in amicable ripening, the absence of thorns on the cup makes harvesting work simple and safe.

Eggplant variety Diamond tying the fruits of the classical form - oblong, cylindrical, slightly thickened to the bottom, in technical ripeness - glossy, bright dark purple color. Their average size is 14–17 cm in length, up to 6 cm in diameter, and a mass of 100–170 g. In biological ripeness, the fruits have a matte shade and brown color of the skin. The flesh of young eggplants is light green in color, dense, with no signs of bitterness. Longevity and transportability of fruits are excellent.

The average yield of eggplant variety Diamond is 6-8 kg. That is how many fruits can be removed for the entire vegetation period of plants with 1 m 2. According to reviews, plants demonstrate high resistance to phytoplasmosis and mosaic, medium - to late blight, vertex rot and Fusarium wilt. The main pest of landings is the Colorado potato beetle.

Agrotechnics of cultivation and care

Diamond Eggplants grow well and bear fruit on light, warm, nutrient-rich soils. Not suitable for growing culture salt marshes, heavy clay and acidic soils. The proximity of groundwater is also not desirable for plants. The place where the eggplant will grow should be well lit by the sun.

So that the bushes are well developed, the soil is prepared in autumn. Under digging, 7-10 kg of humus is applied to 1 m 2, as well as any phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Fresh manure and mineral supplements containing chlorine are not recommended.

Diamond eggplant seeds can be immediately sown in the ground when it warms up to at least 15 ° C. For earlier production and for planting in the greenhouse, it is better to grow seedlings first. Depending on the region and location, do it in February or March. Formation of plants suitable for planting will take from 2 to 2.5 months.

For Diamond Eggplants, seedling cultivation begins with seed preparation. They are pre-pickled in a weak solution of potassium permanganate and optionally soaked in solutions of stimulants. Planting material is sown in cups, cassettes and shallow boxes filled with fertile soil, which is moistened before planting. Eggplant seeds are small, so they are buried in the soil by 1-1.5 cm, cover the container with a film.

For quick germination of eggplants in the room maintain the air temperature of 25 ° C. Sprouts begin to appear on the 5-10 day. After the mass emergence of shoots, the temperature is briefly reduced to 15 ° C, so that the seedlings do not stretch out and form good roots. Further cultivation and care consist in irrigation and 1-2 feedings with complex fertilizers with high nitrogen content.

Planted in a greenhouse or garden beds begin after they have 3-4 leaves. It is at this moment that eggplants are ready for intensive growth and the laying of fruit buds. Place the seedlings according to the scheme 60-75 * 40 cm.

If you practice early landing in open ground, monitor temperature changes. When cooling plants temporarily cover, so as not to slow down the development of the growth point and not to provoke the fall of the ovaries. A critical indicator is below 15 ° C.

Water the plants rarely, but plentifully. On average, they do it 2 times a week. In hot weather, a little more. The first feeding is given 2 weeks after transplanting, following every 2-3 weeks. First use nitrogen fertilizers, and then phosphate-potassium.

Formation of the bush is considered to be optional for the culture. However, in order to obtain earlier production and a good harvest, especially in the greenhouse, the plants are seedlings like tomatoes, and during flowering they also remove part of the leaves. This allows to improve the illumination and breathability of landings. In the ground eggplant can be tied up.

Harvesting of fruits is carried out as they ripen. Eggplants are cut with a sharp knife or raised up and gently break off (try not to damage the bush).
