General information

Tomato cosmonaut wolves cultivation

The development of breeding allowed to create completely new varieties of vegetables and fruits, and even with the given parameters. Tomatoes, perhaps, the favorite "field for experimentation" of breeders. Tomato "Cosmonaut Volkov" - the fruit of amateur breeding, awarded the title of "the most delicious tomato in the world" on one eminent competition, below in the article we consider its characteristics and description.

Description and characteristics of tomato Cosmonaut Volkov

The origin of this hybrid has a prehistory: amateur breeder I. M. Maslov, in the past, an engineer of space technology, after retirement he started breeding new varieties. One of the tomatoes he received, a handsome hero, Maslov gave the name "Cosmonaut Volkov" in honor of his friend-hero.

"Cosmonaut Volkov" - indeterminate type hybridi.e. bush growth is not limited and can reach a height of 1.6m to 2m or more.

On a single stem along the entire length, the formation of brushes takes place: the first is laid in the sinus of an 8-9 leaf, and then - every 2-3 leaves. On the hands, an average of 3 to 7 ovaries are formed. For the season with one bush can be obtained up to 7 kg of tomatoes.

Sugary, very sweet and fragrant, large fruit - from 200 to 400g on average, but lower instances can reach mass 600-800g.

The variety has large fruits, average weight is 200-400 grams.

The shape of the fruit is rounded, the fruit stem is ribbed. Color may be different - from yellow orange to red. Fruits contain up to 4.5% sugar, about 7% of dry substances (i.e. all useful substances, except water).

Tomatoes of this variety are recognized leaders in a balanced content of sugars and acids, high content of vitamins.

This grade is intended for growing in a greenhousewhere you can get the highest yield, but in a warm climate with a long summer, the Cosmonaut Volkov tomato also gives a good result. This is due to the fact that the hybrid belongs to the mid-early varieties, the term of maturation is 120-130 days.

Tomatoes can be harvested immature, milky-brown in color, and then poured, to acquire even greater sweetness.

Main advantages and disadvantages

Very many gardeners choose this variety for planting both in open ground and in greenhouses. Negative reviews practically does not occur, who tried to grow a tomato, note the following advantages:

  • great taste and aroma of fruits,
  • very large size of tomatoes,
  • high yield
  • good disease resistance.
The large size of the fruit and high yield - the merits of the variety Cosmonaut Volkov

Seed and soil preparation

We start with the preparation of seeds for sowing. To do this, you need to calibrate, process the solution of manganese and harden. Calibration is to select very large, healthy, symmetrical grains.

After selection, the seeds need temperso that occasional cold snaps or frosts are not terrible for future seedlings. To do this, the seed is wound in a damp cloth, cleaned for a couple of days in a cold place - on the balcony, in the refrigerator, but the temperature should not be below +1, +2 degrees. Sow seeds in the ground without drying.

Seeds Tomato Cosmonaut Volkov

Seeds can process solution of potassium permanganate (this is the easiest, most affordable, and at the same time effective way). Planting material should be put in a gauze bag and dipped in a pale pink manganese solution for 2 hours. This will kill bacteria, fungal spores, and prevent seedling diseases at an early stage of growth.

The soil is prepared as usual for any seedlings - 1/2 soil, 1/2 humus, you can add 1 cup of ash to a bucket of prepared soil. Sleep it in wooden boxes for seedlings or plastic containers / cups with drainage holes.

Sowing seeds

Planting plants in open ground can be made when the probability of frost is completely excluded, and not earlier than 60-65 days after seed germination.

Each gardener can calculate approximate dates of sowing of seeds, taking into account local weather conditions, they usually fall out mid-end March.

Seeds are sown in tare at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other, buried by 1-1.5 cm, the soil is slightly moistened and cleaned in a warm, well-lit place.

Growing seedlings must be done in a warm, well-lit place.

Seedling care

With the emergence of the first shoots seedlings need to feed. It is best to use complex fertilizers, potash.

When the sprouts appear 2 true leaves, their diveby pinching the root in a separate container. If you plan to grow tomatoes in the greenhouse, you can put in a permanent place. On one square meter, 2-3 plants are placed, if the bushes form into 1 stem - 4 plants.

This variety of tomatoes is unpretentious to the soil, but since the plant is tall, has a high yield, large fruit, additional feeding is necessary, and in several stages. Carry it after landing in the ground during flowering and formation of ovaries.

The main care for adult bushes is timely feeding, removing weeds, loosening the soil after watering.

Be sure to conduct cradlei.e. removing side shoots and tying bushes so that they do not get damaged by the weight of the fruit. At the end of July, you can pinch the main stem, so that the plant directs all its forces to the growth and ripening of fruits.

The Cosmonaut Volkov tomato is resistant to typical diseases, but it is necessary to monitor the health of the bush and the fruits and to carry out preventive treatments in time with the usual preparations, boric acid.

Tomato "Cosmonaut Volokov" has the best qualities of tomatoes: excellent taste, yield, unpretentiousness. Many gardeners prefer this variety in order to enjoy the taste and aroma of sugar fruit, for which it is worth trying to grow this crop.

Description of the bushes

Tomato bush - indeterminate (has unlimited growth, with good weather can grow quite high). The bush is powerful, up to 2 m high, therefore it should be cut if necessary.

Fruit Description

The fruits of this variety of tomatoes have the following characteristics:

  • rounded flat shape
  • ribbed around the stem,
  • color: interlacing of lemon, orange and red colors,
  • fleshy, have a sweet taste,
  • weight: 200-400 g (with proper care reach 600 g).

Capacity and soil

It is advisable to use fertile soil. You can take any kind of container: wooden boxes, plastic pallets, etc. The main thing is to ensure proper drainage, water should not stagnate in the container.

Conditions for germination

For quick and friendly germination planted seeds covered with foil. The box with the future seedlings must be placed in a bright place, but so that the sun's rays do not directly fall on it. It is not necessary to water much, only moderate watering to refresh the soil. With all the rules, the first shoots should appear 5-6 days after planting the seeds. The main thing - to properly handle the seeds and comply with the landing scheme.

Hardening seedlings

10-14 days before landing in the ground, seedlings need to be hardened, that is, prepare it for more severe real conditions. To do this, the seedlings are transferred to a cooler room, so it becomes accustomed to lowering the temperature, which should not fall below +8 ° C. The hardening of seedlings on drafts and on the ground with direct sunlight is prohibited.

When hardening, seedlings must be carried out to fresh air, but for no more than 30 minutes. The hardening process should be systematic. Subject to all rules, the plant will be able to tolerate frosts down to -5 ° C. A couple of days before planting the seedlings in the ground, it must be sprayed with a solution of copper sulphate, adding to it any biological preparations for fungal diseases.

Watering, weeding and loosening

Watering the bush is rare, but abundant (especially watering is important before flowering and before the ripening of tomatoes), the dose of water increases at the moment when the ovaries are already formed. After watering the ground need to loosen. Also, loosening is carried out as needed, but not less than 1 time in 2 months. Around the bush you need to regularly remove weeds.

Masking - removal of excess shoots that are in the plant's sinus, between the stem and leaves. Different bushes stepsons differently. The Cosmonaut Volkov Tomato is an indeterminate plant, therefore it stepson by cutting off shoots 7-8 cm long, while shoots need to be cut off, leaving about 1-2 cm from the edge of the base, to prevent re-growth of stepchildren. This method removes all stepchildren, the bush does not thicken and the level of yield does not decrease.

Before the formation of the fruits, each tomato brush is tied up so that the ripe fruit under its weight does not damage the bush.

Preventive treatment

The Cosmonaut Volkov tomato is susceptible to diseases and pests, regardless of whether it grows in a greenhouse or in open ground. Late treatment ensures poor tomato yield. Consider potential diseases and ways to treat a plant:

  • tobacco mosaic - forms a mesh on the leaves, and also provokes their twisting (with this disease, the affected branches of the plant are to be removed, and the cut points should be treated with potassium permanganate),
  • brown spotting - occurs when the temperature is poor and the watering is inadequate, respectively, for treatment, you need to adjust the irrigation process and adjust the temperature,
  • insects such as the greenhouse whitefly (when growing tomatoes in a greenhouse), slugs, spider mites (when growing tomatoes in open ground) can also attack tomato bushes. In the fight against the greenhouse whitefly, the Confidor solution will help (1 ml of solution per 10 liters of water), the soap solution will remove the spider mites (just wipe the affected areas of the bush with it), and the zoling of the soil will remove all slugs from the plant.

Fertilizing lay in the ground at the time of planting tomatoes, and after the plant fertilized every 10 days. Before feeding the bush is watered, it promotes uniform distribution of fertilizer in the ground. Complex (phosphate and potash) fertilizers are suitable for top dressing, their nutritional elements contribute to better growth of tomatoes.
