The apple-tree branch Zhigulevskoe is often called late autumn or early winter variety. This old variety was bred in 1936 by S.P. Kedrin at the Samara Experimental Station by hybridizing Borovinka vulgaris with Wagner prize.
Zhigulevskoe received wide distribution in the central regions of Russia. The variety was included in 1965 in the State Register of breeding achievements in the Central, Central Black Earth, North Caucasus, Middle Volga, Lower Volga regions, as well as in the form of stanza - in the East Siberian region.
Description apple tree Zhigulevskoe
Late autumn cultivar. The trees are vigorous (up to 5 m. In height), the crown is broad-pyramidal, rather sparse due to its weak pobegoobrazovatelnoy ability.
Recommended for planting in industrial and amateur gardens.
Yield varieties high. Fruits on kolchatka and fruit twigs.
Winter hardiness satisfactory. The best landing sites are the southern slopes.
The variety is not resistant to scab (especially leaves).
Skoroplodnost average. The first fruits will be 4-6 years on the seed stock. The yield is periodic with the age of the tree.
The fruits of the Zhigulevskoe variety are rather large 130-180 g (maximum 350 g) golden with a bright red blush, of a sweet-sour taste.
Fruits are flat-rounded in shape, wide ridge, sometimes with golden-rusted tubercles. The funnel is deep, very wide, medium-rust. The saucer is wide, of medium depth. Consumption time is October-December.
Fruit consumption is from the third decade of September to December, sometimes until January. The length of the consumer period is 70-90 days.
Apple-tree Zhigulevskoe samobesplodny grade. For a good harvest pollinators are needed - varieties with similar flowering period.
The ideal neighbors for this variety will be late autumn apple trees.
To achieve maximum yield, there are several varieties that are suitable for pollination:
- "Anis gray",
- "Antonovka ordinary",
- "Kutuzovets" and others.
Pollination is possible only if the distance between the pollinating varieties and the Zhigulevskoe apple tree does not exceed 50 m.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Zhigulevskoe variety
Like any variety, the Zhigulevskoe apple has its advantages and disadvantages.
- high yield
- high marketability of fruits
- Suitability variety for growing in intensive type gardens.
- average winter hardiness of trees
- poor bind (can be broken off in years with high yield)
- instability to scab.
Reviews gardeners about the variety Zhigulevskoe
Katia: We have an old Zhigulevskoe apple tree. I would not say that the apples are very tasty. Yes, with sourness, yes, big ones, but not so much to gasp from the taste, there is more tasty. The apples themselves are dense, as if stone and the surface is uneven. Not stored for too long. And they love to peck birds.
Danila, Moscow region: We love Zhigulevskoe because the apples are tasty and well preserved. We lie in boxes, with straw and fine.
Features care for apple varieties Zhigulevskoe
We have already written and made a video on this topic about the correct planting of the apple tree. I just want to dwell on the points that are applicable in the care of the apple variety Zhigulevskoe.
When planting, it is necessary to take into account the self-infertility of the apple of this variety and place the sapling next to pollinators - varieties that bloom at the same time.
Seedlings on seed stock will always be less demanding to the conditions of growth and care for them.
When planting seedlings, consider on which stock graft is grafted. For seed plants - the distance between trees is at least 4 m, for clonal semi-dwarfs and dwarfs - 2.5 - 2 m.
The first 2–3 years there is no need to fertilize apple trees, since a sufficient amount was brought in during planting. Mature trees fertilize 3 times per season. The first top dressing in the form of 500 g of urea or rotted manure per tree is brought in the middle of spring. The second time feeding is made at the beginning of flowering. It is best to use mineral nitrogen fertilizers, following the instructions on the packaging, either liquid bird droppings or mullein (¼ fertilizer buckets for ¾ of water buckets).
The use of nitrophoska for 10-15% increases the yield of fruits
After flowering, an apple tree will not be superfluous to feed with nitropha or sodium humate, strictly following the instructions on the packaging of fertilizers.
Sodium humate is a growth stimulator to increase the growth of shoots, reduce fall, increase plant resistance to stress factors of the growing season in dry, wet and cold years
Regardless of the planting season for young trees watering is required. The best time for it is considered early morning or late evening. For each month, there are about 5-6 waterings. During the dry summer period with insufficient soil moisture, it is necessary to water twice a day every 5–7 days. On 1 young tree 2–3 buckets of water are enough.
Protection against diseases and pests
The apple tree variety Zhigulevskoe is resistant to scab disease. Against the powdery mildew, you can use the drug Scor (2 ml per 10 l of water) or Topaz (2 ml per 10 l of water).
The most dangerous pest for this variety is considered moth, and especially its second generation. To minimize the spoilage of trees and apples, you can sprinkle apple trees with wormwood extract (25 ml of infusion in 10 liters of water) before beginning flowering 2 times with an interval of 5-7 days.
Hanging bundles of wormwood in the treetops also scares the moths. When the old bundle completely loses its flavor, it should be replaced with a new one.
Bunches of bitter wormwood, hung in the crowns of trees, scare the codling moth with a sharp unpleasant smell
From other pests, it is recommended to spray trees with a solution of karbofos (70–90 g per 10 l of water) after the formation of ovaries.
In the spring after pruning, the apple trees are whitened to protect the bark from insects and pests. This is best done in dry and clear weather. Young trees covered with chalk solution, and the old - with lime.
Spring whitewash aims to destroy pests that hibernate in the bark
In the winter period, the shtamboue are covered with roofing felt, burlap or tied with spruce fur twigs to protect against rodents and hares. In the northern regions, the apple variety Zhigulevskoe is grown by stanan molding, so in winter it is covered with a special net and covered with a layer of snow.
Since the variety is moderately resistant to frost, choosing the means to protect against mice and hares, it is worth combining them with insulation. For example, tying the trunk with spruce branches serves as a simultaneous protection and warming.
The Zhigulevskoye variety is not self-bearing, therefore apple need cross-pollinators. For this purpose, early autumn and late autumn varieties are suitable, for example, Antonovka ordinary, Anis striped or Borovinka.
Harvesting and storage
The variety is characterized by increased yield, but 5–6 years after the first harvest of fruits the tree periodically bears fruit. With one adult tree with proper care, you can remove 200-250 kg. In order for the collected fruits to retain their taste and appearance for a certain time, it is necessary to properly organize the storage conditions.
The Zhigulyovskoye variety is considered to be high-yielding and skoroplodny, since at the age of 5-6 years the number of fruits collected is up to 250 kg per tree
Harvesting takes place in the first decade of September, and in the dry summer - at the end of August, but the fruits reach full maturity 2–4 weeks after removal.
Ripe apples do not fall off, which facilitates harvesting and preserves the original quality of the fruit.
It is recommended to store fruits in a dry cool room with a temperature of -2 to +4 degrees, in special wooden boxes or cardboard boxes with holes. In this case, apples sprinkle with dry wood chips or wrapped in paper. In such conditions, the shelf life of apples is 70–90 days.
The variety of apple trees Zhigulyovskoe won considerable popularity among gardeners for its unpretentiousness in cultivation, excellent taste and attractive presentation of the fruit. Skoroplodnost, high yields, long-term storage and resistance to scab make this variety unique.
