General information

Growing tritheley, caring for rare bulbous plants

Triteleya belongs to the family Lileinaya, which includes several species suitable for cultivation in apartments or in sheltered places in the garden. Originally from North America. The flowers are bell-shaped, purple, blue, white, planted on a stem that is about 30 cm tall. The leaves are narrow, several of one bulb. Tritylea friable - with blue or purple flowers and reaches up to 60 cm in height.

Growing up

Triteleya needs a well-lit place, well drained, rich in humus, fertile soil and a protected quiet place. The bulbs are planted in spring (April-May) in the ground to a depth of about 10-15 cm, at a distance of 8-15 cm. Triteleya is suitable for growing in pots. If the plant is grown in the ground, then at the turn of September-October, it is necessary to dig it out for the winter and leave it in a cool room protected from frost. Growing a plant in the house for the winter period, you need to put it in a sandy substrate in a cool place (about 10 ° C), watering is very rare. When it blooms, we transfer it to a warm room. After flowering, a dormant period is required, so they are watered very economically and put on a sunny place. Propagated by adventitious bulbs or seeds sown in March, seedlings are capable of flowering after a long time up to 5 years.

Description of the plant triteleya

Tritheleya (Triteleia) is a genus from the Asparagaceae family (Asparagaceae), but is sometimes referred to as Liliaceae and Alliaceae. These are bulbous, perennial herbaceous plants. With flat linear leaves. Their stems are straight. Long peduncles, umbellate inflorescences, funnel-shaped perianth. Bell-shaped flowers of different colors: purple, blue, pink. In the open ground blooms in June. In the greenhouse can bloom and twice a year. The genus contains 10 species.

Care and planting tritheley

It is grown in open ground, in greenhouses and in room conditions. Triteleye will be good in the sun. However, the light shadow still carries calmly. Just bloom can not so bright. But from drafts it must be protected.

In places with a warm climate, tritheleu is planted in September, with a cold one in April. Before that, you can fertilize soil with organic matter. Add compost or rotted leaves.

Drought tolerant plant. But in the period of growth he needs abundant watering. However, it is important that there is no stagnation of water in the ground. Therefore, good drainage is desirable. Sensitive to tritheleya and temperature changes.

In winter, the plant should be insulated with sawdust or spruce branches. It is even better to dig out the bulbs when the leaves are dry. Then the bulbs are dried and stored in sawdust. They form a lot of babies if you feed them in a dormant period.

Breeding tritheley

  • Seeds should be sown in containers with light soil. Better to do it in April. And leave them in a lit place before germination. In the open ground they are moved depending on the climate. In areas with warmer winters this can be done in the fall. In the same place where winters are harsh it is better to sow in spring. With this reproduction, the plant may bloom after 3-4 years. But some species bloom in 1-2 years.
  • Children from a bulb need to be separated at its digging. And plant them well in the spring so that the earth is already warm. Add sand to the well before planting. Then you need to fill up with soil and water well.

Some germinate bulbs at home. And then moved to the open ground. But this is not recommended. At this time, triteleya is actively growing and transplanting it will hurt. That is why it is desirable to plant the bulbs immediately to a permanent place.

Types and varieties of tritheley

  • Tritheley Bridges (T. bridgesii Wats.) View with purple flowers.
  • Large-flowered triteleya (T. Grandiflora) Up to 70 cm high with blue flowers.
  • Henderson's Tritheleus (T. hendersonii) Flowers of a plant of salmon color with purple stripes.
  • Triteleya Hauel (T. Howelli) Height can be up to 60cm. The flowers are dark purple.
  • Triteleya loose (Triteleia laxa Benth.). Flowers are usually blue-violet, but they are also white.

Triteleya Plant Video

Last year, at the garden fair, I stocked up with crocuses, bought 25 -30 bulbs of different varieties. The seller could not get enough of me that he would not offer - I take everything, everything is interesting to me. I knew where I was going, I stocked up for this denyushku. However, only crocuses did not cost, even brought home 3 rose bushes and astilba in a small pot. Well, just a flower shopaholic.

So, the same seller offered me to buy tritelia bulbs. He did not have pictures, but the words gave the impression of a beautiful flower. I bought myself a little "on trial."

I got a grade of trithelei Rudy or Rudy. An interesting name for a flower blue color. I'll tell you my experience of growing this flower.

Planting material was treated with a pink solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes. By analogy with Ixia, I planted tritheles in pots to the recommended depth - 8 cm. By the way, I had 10 Dutch bulbs, and what do you think? Kapusyanka or another name Medvedka all ate. Here she is such a glutton does not disdain

Almost 2 weeks I waited for the appearance of sprouts. But, then I realized that the depth of planting for tritilei bulbs was too great. Carefully dug them and planted to a depth of 5 cm.

During the transplantation, I examined the planting material - all sprouted with thin roots, a cone of leaves formed at the top of the bulbs. Shortly after transplanting, graceful leaves appeared above the soil surface.

Tritheley grew very slowly. I came to the conclusion that she does not like pot content. The tips of its long, narrow leaves dried out with the slightest lack of water. My beautiful trithelia, Rudi, blossomed only after 3 months.

At the top of the peduncle a tuft-like inflorescence of tubular flowers formed. The flowers of the tritheley are simple, but beautiful bright blue. The inner petals are folded so much that it is almost impossible to examine the contents of the pharynx. Flowering lasted about a week, after which the flower was cut off.

As with all bulbs, the leaves soon began to turn yellow. After they dried they dug up the bulbs with the babies. In late September, she planted her on the garden near the bow. The buds of the trebley will bloom and decorate the flowerbed, and the bow will have faded by that time and will lose its decorative effect.

This flower has such a feature. All the bulbous flowers familiar to us bloom in spring, and the trithelia blooms in July, provided that it has already wintered. And the first time can bloom in the month of August.

these are the bulbs

You can plant bulbs in spring and autumn. Again, it winters fine in the southern regions, but in the northern regions it can freeze, so it is best to dig it out. Store at a temperature of 6 - 8 degrees.

Care for trittels is not difficult - watering as the soil dries out, loosening. Remember, bulbous water cannot stand any stagnation. Prefers sunny places. It simply does not tolerate transplants, so many plants disappear.

Before direct planting in the ground, it is better to germinate in a pot, and only then do the transshipment.

Flower is the real mother of the heroine, if during the rest of the plant to make feeding, a lot of children grow. Hence another funny name - “Fool’s Onion” fool's onion.

expressive yellow color

The tritheleus is so charming thanks to her little flowers bells. Plant it near the gate or at the entrance to the house. She will always meet you with a slight twitching in the wind, as if she is singing now ...

A genus of perennial bulbous bulbous plants of the family Brodiaeoideae, growing in nature in western North America and in California, both in open spaces and in partial shade. The name of the genus "Triteleia" comes from two Greek words - ‘tri-three teleios’ - ideal, emphasizing the distinct tripleness of the petals of the flower.

A small corm (about 2.5 cm) produces several narrow, erect leaves 20-60 cm long. The inflorescences with beautiful funnel-shaped flowers are located on top of a bare peduncle, which in penumbra can reach up to 50 cm in length.

Flowers depending on the variety can be blue, blue, purple, white, pink and yellow.

Plants grown in the greenhouse bloom twice a year - in May and in October. In the soil and in the pots perennial blooms once in mid-June, and flowering lasts several weeks. The fruit is a box with numerous black seeds.

Corms are edible and taste like boiled potatoes.

Planting and care

Triteleya develops best in full sun, protected from drafts. With a lack of lighting, the number of peduncles decreases, and the palette of flowers is not as saturated.

Territory landing period - mid-April. Corms are planted to a depth of 5-8 cm and they emerge quite quickly. The main requirement of the soil is its nutritional value and good water permeability. Therefore, before planting, add crushed rotted leaves to the soil, a little compost or any other organic matter.

Provide perennials with good watering during active growth. In the summer he tolerates drought well.

The plant looks beautiful in thick plantings, in rockeries and is ideal for mixed borders. As companions, they planted crops such as hayssoris, escholzia, tigridia, levkokorina, as well as bright ground cover.

Breeding methods

Triteleya reproduces either by bulbs or seeds. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.

  • Seed propagation:

  1. Seeding is carried out in the spring in greenhouses or trays with light ground.
  2. Seeds are germinated in a bright place, but it is worth protecting the seedlings from direct sunlight.
  3. Watering is carried out as the soil dries.
  4. Planting in open ground is done in the fall (in a mild climate) or in the spring.

Flowering with this planting will begin on the 3-4th year.

  • Bulb reproduction:
  1. Young bulbs are separated from old bulbs in the autumn when they are dug for wintering.
  2. Overwinter bulbs in a dark place.
  3. Landing is carried out in April-May, when the earth is well heated.
  4. They are planted in boxes with light soil at a distance of 10-12 cm from each other, deepening into the soil by 8 cm.
  5. Watering is moderate. The soil should always remain slightly wet.
Tritheley bulbs

So, you have bulbs or seedlings obtained from the seeds, and everything is ready for planting in open ground. Now we will understand what is needed for this.

Planting in open ground should be done in the warm season - April-May. In order to properly plant a trilogy, we need:

  • shovel - for digging holes,
  • bucket with water,
  • sand bucket
  • prepared soil.

Choose a place to grow in a well-protected from the draft area.

We start landing:

  1. We dig a shallow hole 8-10 cm deep.
  2. Pour some sand or rubble into the hole (to ensure drainage).
  3. From above the drainage pour out the prepared soil to about half of the hole.
  4. Install the onion or seedlings.
  5. Fill the soil to the top, slightly compacted soil.
  6. We water.
We make the next well at least 10 cm from the previous one.

Flowers like a slightly wet, light soil. Therefore, before planting seedlings or bulbs, provide drainage for your plants to avoid stagnant moisture. More soil must be nutritious.

To do this, mix two parts of peat, one part of the earth, two parts of sand. Instead of peat, you can use compost, humus.

This mixture is suitable for all types of treble.

The best site for planting these flowers will be a place open to the sun, protected from the wind.

If the sun is not enough, the flower will grow slowly, its development will stop, the number of flower stalks will decrease.

When planting, pour about 3-4 liters of water into the hole. When the plant is planted, the hole should be watered again from above.

While planting in the hole, you can throw a little compost or humus. After a week or two, after the plant has taken root and adapts, you can water it with nitrogen fertilizer.

In general, the flower can be considered drought resistant. But he needs watering during growth. Because in the spring and before flowering do not be afraid to water it several times a week.

But avoid excess moisture. After flowering and until the end of the season you can water less often.

When you pour, do not forget to loosen the ground to provide air access to the roots of the plant.

Special requirements for feeding do not impose. You can restrict the growth period of nitrogen fertilizers (nitroammofoska, urea). During flowering periodically add superphosphate to water.

In winter, trithelei in places with a mild climate should be sprinkled with sawdust and lapnik. If the winters are snowy and cold in your places, then in the autumn you need to dig up the bulbs, dry them and, pouring sawdust, put them in a dark, cool place until spring.

The greatest threat to treleley is the wrong care.

With excessive feeding or too dry air, her leaves turn brown and fall. If you water it more than necessary, the plant will begin to rot.

From insect pests most often deliver the troubles of nematodes and aphids. To combat them should be the usual methods - spraying with soapy water, insecticides. It happens that the flowers begin to hit gray rot. To combat this fungus, use "Vectra", "Skor" or "Maxim".

With proper care, this rare visitor from the American coast will look great in rockeries, thick landings, curbs. Care of him is not complicated, and you can grow tritheleu without much hassle in your flower garden.
