Maranta, which came to our latitudes from the Brazilian tropics, arouses interest in the diversity of foliage and a bright spectrum of green-red color. As a sign of gratitude for the proper care in the home conditions, the plant, although rarely, throws out inflorescences. In fact, they are inconspicuous and not as attractive as broad linear-lanceolate leaves with a clear pattern and multicolored veins. In addition, not only their appearance, but also their behavior is striking. In this article we will tell you all about the flower of arrowroot: from legends and beliefs to requirements and whims.

What conditions to create for arrowroot in the house

To make the whimsical flower comfortable in your abode, take care of the correct temperature, moisture and lighting conditions, do not forget to fertilize it and transplant it to the best of growth. Maranta does not forgive mistakes when growing at home, which means that the more you love it and bother it, the brighter it will glow with chic foliage, but it is worth it to cool down a bit - the plant will die (it’s not for nothing that got into the list of Caprials). However, do not let this fact scare you. The main task in care is to bring room cultivation as close as possible to the native culture environment. Having got used, you learn to please the beauty.

The "praying grass" has special requirements for placement, and where you put the pot, you will understand by observing its leaves. Their mobility complements the uniqueness of an exotic flowerpot. During normal development, plants, in the evenings and on rainy weather, the arrowroot leaves curl up in a tubule, rising slightly, and in the mornings and on bright sunny days, they are widely stretched to a horizontal position.

If the old foliage turned pale and began to wither, and the new one grows shallow, has lost its juiciness and sank down very much, it means that the flower is uncomfortable due to an excess of light. While the loss of the pattern on the leaves, their constant torsion, on the contrary, speaks of poor lighting.

An ideal option for placing a flower would be the northern windows, where there is always partial shade and there is no burning direct sunlight. If this is not possible, east-west sides are acceptable. In extreme cases, the flower can be placed away from the window, somewhere on the table or on the floor stand. The irreparable mistake of many flower growers lies in the fact that they push the arrowroot into dark corners. In such conditions, it cannot develop and perishes.

Optimal temperature

In its natural environment, the plant grows in heat and moisture. Therefore, low temperatures will adversely affect the tropical guest. The permissible limit is +15 ° C, and if you do not water the plant abundantly. Do not forgive the "praying grass" drafts, sudden changes in temperature and heat. In summer, she is comfortable with +22. +25 ° C, and in winter the thermometer should not fall below +18 ° C. With increasing temperature, the need to increase the humidity of the air increases.

How to care for arrowroot at home

The leaves of the culture, often act as an indicator of the correctness of its cultivation. Therefore, they are regularly sprayed and wiped, and it is important to ensure that the water does not leave untidy spots (it is best to use a spray bottle and a soft brush). Be aware, arrowroot is a fragile representative of the flora that is easily damaged.

In summer, it is advisable to take a flowerpot to the balcony, and even better to the garden, but not in the sun. You should also take care of protection from wind, exhaust or industrial gases. Fresh air is necessary for the full development of the plant, but at the same time it can be destroyed by airing near a busy road.

From time to time the bush should be cut. Dry stalks of a nondescript inflorescence and dead leaves do not look aesthetically pleasing. Therefore, they are carefully trimmed with sharp scissors, which should be disinfected before work. Also come with strongly elongated shoots, distorting the form of green scenery. With a favorable content, the annual growth of the pot is from 4 to 6 leaves. With age, arrowroot, of course, will lose the decorativeness and pomp of "hair", but this problem can be solved by cutting.

Watering and humidity

The most important requirement of the arrowroot flower for home care is to moisten the soil and air. It can be carried out simultaneously or alternated. Usually, tropical plants need abundant watering in the summer and moderate in the winter. Also make sure that the potted earth does not dry out, but you should not turn it into a swamp. In both cases, the culture risks getting sick and dying.

Water for moistening should be soft, room temperature. In snowy weather, you can use the thawed. If you take water from the tap, leave the container for a few nights to properly settle.

The number of irrigations depends on the temperature conditions that contain the pet room. Some growers are advised to fill the tray under the tank with a plant with gravel or moss, and only after that pour water there. Naturally, there should be a hole in the bottom of the pot.

Elegant maranth requires daily spraying. In the cold season, when central heating or other heating devices are active in the apartments, the procedure should be repeated in the morning and evening. A naughty flower and a warm shower will invigorate, just remember to cover the ground in a pot with a polyethylene patch. This procedure is recommended once a month, and the water should not be warmer than 40 ° C. Keep in mind that in rooms with overdried air, all humidifying procedures will be in vain, which you can identify from the dry, rusty tips of the leaves.

Top dressing and fertilizer

The exhausted maranta begins to be fed in early spring, and the approximate feeding period covers the time from April to August. Fertilize the plant twice a month, introducing in turn organic and mineral complex fertilizers. The latter is diluted to light concentrations.

Of organics, the most valuable fertilizer is chicken manure. It contains large quantities of nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium necessary for the flora. These beneficial substances are absorbed gradually. Nevertheless, in some cases, beginners of room pottery lovers are afraid to overdo the proportions and bring only purchased mineral dressing, adhering to clear instructions. When preparing fertilizer from chicken excrement, it is important to consider the following recommendations:

  1. Never use fresh manure as a feed, as it contains uric acid, which can burn the roots.
  2. In order to reduce excessive concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus, leave litter at night in the open air.
  3. To prepare a liquid feed dilute the collected excrement with water in the ratio of 1:20. The mixture should be more than a week on the street. Do not pour it under the roots. In addition, for the beginning it is necessary to water the plant abundantly with ordinary water.

How to transplant

For the transplant of arrowroot, in the spring they are looking for a shallow container (a few centimeters wider than the previous one) and preparing the substrate. In the absence of the necessary components, you can use the purchase soil for arrowroot. At home, it is prepared from coarse sand, garden soil and peat in a ratio of 1: 3: 0.5. If desired, you can add charcoal. Another way is to mix equal parts of humus, leaf and peat ground.

Regardless of the option you choose, the soil should be loose and slightly acidic. You can check the acidity with a special decoction: in a glass of boiling water, a couple of leaves of black currant are brewed, and when it is well drawn and cooled down, throw a small earthen ball there. Observe: if the reaction results in a slightly reddened water - the soil is sour, the green tint indicates a slightly acidic environment, and the bluish one indicates a neutral one. Now, when everything is ready for transplantation, let us examine in detail how to transplant the arrowroot. To begin with, lay a layer of expanded clay on the bottom of the pot, carefully roll over a moist earthen tuber with a rosette from the previous tank and sprinkle it with fresh substrate. Take care not to damage the root system. At the end of the procedure, water the plant and spray it with a spray bottle. It will need increased attention until rooting.

Reproduction by division

To get a second copy of the plant, it is enough to cut off part of the root when it is being transplanted:An earthen tuber is simply cut in half and planted delenki in different containers. If the planted parts with poorly developed shoots, they are watered, covered with a plastic bag and sent to a warm place, creating greenhouse conditions. When the bush goes to growth, sheltered remove, continuing to regularly spray the leaves.

Reproduction by cuttings

This method interests a lot of people, but based on the number of questions frequently asked in various forums, it can be concluded that there is a lack of knowledge in this direction. Many scientific articles have already been written on how to propagate arrowroot cuttings, but in order not to go deep into scientific terminology, we only note that the technology is simple and accessible to everyone.

Planting material taken from the annual shoots in summer or autumn (cut the tips of the shoots must have at least 4 leaves). Then, for several months they are placed in water, and when the roots appear, the cuttings are deepened 6 cm into the substrate, the preparation of which we mentioned above. Further care for the young pot is the same as when dividing the rhizomes.

Solving possible problems when growing arrowroot

Do not even doubt: the slightest error in the care will be obvious. The appearance of "praying grass" often deteriorates due to inappropriate conditions that lead to diseases. Besides maranth is very sensitive to pests. Her love to "squat" spider mites, thrips, scale insects, often taking up the entire inside of the sheet. This usually happens with dry indoor air.

In the fight against harmful parasites insecticides have an impeccable reputation. At home, you can try to wash the healthy and infected foliage with a solution of soap and a weak extract of tobacco. However, proceed with extreme caution so as not to tear the perennial. Processing plants with crushed sulfur also helps. 2-3 hours after the procedure, put the pot under a cool shower. Be prepared: it will all have to be repeated several times, right up to the complete disappearance of the hated bugs. There are cases when it is no longer possible to save a copy.

In order to avoid pests, diseases of arrowroot and to avoid possible treatment, increase the humidity of the air and water the soil.

When it is sour, the roots will begin to rot, which will result in the appearance of nematodes. You will learn about this by education on the leaves of brown spot. Salvation will only cut off the damaged parts on the living edge. It is important to process slices with potassium permanganate. Only after that the root socket can be transplanted into fresh soil and further follow the rules of watering.

Seeing that the arrow has dropped the leaves, do not exhaust yourself with the thought “what to do?”. To start, inspect the pot and check it for pests. If you find nothing, pay attention to the lighting. Located near the battery or in direct sunlight flower immediately relocate. However, at the same time, too much moisture, dryness and total darkness are also useless.

Pay attention to the leaves:

  • if they twist and begin to fall off - increase moisture,
  • dried and brown on the tips - review the irrigation mode, there may be an excess or lack of moisture,
  • became yellow and faded slightly - water more often,
  • lost the picture and acquired a pale lifeless color - rearrange the pot in partial shade.

general characteristics

Maranta is a decorative herbaceous perennial, the size and appearance of which depends on the particular variety. On average, the height reaches about 60 cm. The stems are initially erect, but the older the plant, the more it leans towards the ground.

Maranth tubers are used in cooking in different countries of the world. As in other tuberous, they contain a lot of starch.

The annual growth of the flower is small. The flowering period is summer. Rare and tiny graceful inflorescences-panicles appear directly from the stem. Maranth flowers tiny and inconspicuous, white, pastel yellow or salmon pink hue. By their decorative qualities, they are not able to compete with large and beautiful leaves, but in their place are boxes with seeds.

Types of arrowroot

There are a great many varieties of arrowroot, but at home and on the farm they usually breed several of them. Basically, these are decorative varieties. Breeders constantly display new and interesting colors. Most of them can be classified into two categories: bicolor and tricolor, by the number of colors in which the sheet plate is painted.

Belozhilchataya maranth

The compact perennial shrub gradually grows to a semi-amber shape. This category includes a number of varieties and subspecies with different leaf color.

But the general outlines remain unchanged: oblong, pith or wide leaves from about 7x10 to 10x15 cm. Regarding the petiole, they grow at an acute angle. Bush rhizome - developed, with oval tubers resembling potatoes. White veins appear on the sheet plate, which is why the variety got its name. The reverse side of the sheet is usually reddish.

Red-leaved arrowroot or fascinator

This is a bright representative of the tricolors. The main background of the sheet plate is dark green, sometimes brownish. To the edges of the leaves brighten. In the center passes a light strip, from which the pronounced transverse strands diverge. They are painted in red, the saturation of which varies from very pale to deep purple. Another feature is the broken direction of the stems.

Comb marantha

The shrub of medium size reaches about 40 cm. The succulent creeping rhizome is short, with spindle-shaped bulges for accumulating nutrients and moisture. Leaves - wide or oblong, up to 15 cm. The edges of the plate are slightly wavy.

The feature of combed arrowroot in its coloring. A continuous lime ridge appears on a green leaf, from which broad dark strokes diverge. They form a continuous border, and the ridge gradually sharpens.

Reed Maranta

One of the most interesting and unusual species stands out against the general background. The height of erect stems sometimes exceeds 120 cm. The leaves are elongated, resembling an egg in shape. By the ends they sharpen. The edge is painted in a dark gray shade. Rhizome densely dotted with tubers.

Maranta Kerhoven

This is the most common and well-known variety. On the dark sheet plate appears central vein. On both sides of it are symmetrical strokes, which darken and turn brown as they grow. However, they remain separate and do not merge into one lane. There are longitudinal veins, although they are practically invisible.

Maranta Massange

This is an exquisite variety, which is also called black arrowroot. Externally, he was not far from the classic white-toed stalk. The difference is that the base green background is saved along the edge. From the main vein sharply diverging longitudinal, maximally light or even white. Contrast give dark strokes between them.

Caring for arrowroot

The secret of successful care for arrowroot in compliance with the temperature and humidity conditions.

The ideal soil for continuous growth is a mix of leaf, humus and coniferous soil mixture mixed with sand and charcoal. But the standard fiber peat will not work. Also avoid lime. At the bottom, arrange high drainage.

The plant does not tolerate the heat and heat above + 28 ... + 30C. Avoid direct rays of the sun, drafts, as well as sudden temperature changes. Optimum in winter - up to + 20C. In winter, it is undesirable to lower it below + 14C. At this time of the year it is important that the leaves do not touch the cold window.

During active growth, use complex fertilizers. Now sold specialized solutions for decorative and deciduous varieties. But do not abuse, because it is equally important not to overfeed the arrowroot.

Abundant watering is recommended to repeat only as the top layer of the substrate dries. For colds, reduce the frequency to avoid rotting rhizomes. For irrigation, take filtered water, at least - soft settled. Maranta is sensitive to any extraneous impurities.

The ideal air humidity is about 70%. You can compensate for it by systematically spraying the leaves. This is especially important in the summer and during the heating season. Locally increase the humidity will help the pan with water, but in this case, make sure that the moisture does not get to the roots.

Most comfortable maranth feels in partial shade. Under direct sunlight and bright light, it fades. In the apartment, pay attention to the windows that face north-west or east.

Transplantation and reproduction

Maranth reproduces by three classical methods:

1. When sowing seeds, grow seedlings immediately with the arrival of spring. Take a wide pot or box, peat-sand substrate and seeds. The first shoots appear in the next 2 weeks. The main thing is to maintain a stable temperature, around + 16 ° ... + 19 °. Как только на саженце появляется несколько полноценных листочков, его можно пересаживать.

2To root the cuttings, cut shoots from the mother plant up to 10 cm with several healthy leaves. The whole process takes about 4 weeks. Rooting is possible from May to September. Once the root is formed, transplant the arrowroot into the peat substrate.

3. Adult and healthy shrubs can be propagated by division. Dig and clean the shrub, and then carefully cut the rhizome. It is important that each seedling has several healthy leaves and tubers. Before transplanting, cut the sections with coal for disinfection. After that, they can be seated in a wet, loose soil.

The adult plant is recommended to replant annually, in early spring.

Pest and disease control

Maranth problems are typical for tropical plants. With a lack of moisture or heat, it weakens and fades, but with an excess of water, root rot appears and fungal diseases develop. This can be prevented by maintaining a stable regimen and periodically treating the flower with antifungal preparations.

Leaves sometimes strike scutes. They suck the juice, because of which the plate changes color, it appears damaged and sticky drops. Remove the parasites mechanically, using soapy water. After that, spray the leaves with a special preparation.

With excessive dry air, spider mites appear. You can get rid of them with a hot shower, but this should be done quickly and carefully. But in this way you can destroy the parasites without chemistry, and this is especially important in the apartment. There are also special acaricides against pests.

Maranta belozhilkovaya

The height of the stem is about 30 cm. The leaves are up to 15 cm long and up to 9 cm wide. The shape of the leaves is oval. Leaf color: the upper side - on a dark green background, silvery streaks and gray-green patterns, the bottom side - gray-green or reddish. The plant is unpretentious and easily propagates..

Maranta tricolor

Recently, this varietal variety is becoming increasingly popular due to its spectacular tricolor leaves..

Leaf size - up to 13 cm in length and up to 6 cm in width. The shape of the leaves is oval. Leaf color: the upper side - on a velvety green surface (from dark in the center to lighter to the edges) red veins pass, in the center there is a row of merging light green or yellowish-green spots, the bottom side is crimson in color with pink veins. The flowers are light purple.

Maranta Massangeana

Outwardly, it resembles Marantu Kerhoven, but differs from it in the color of spots - from brown-olive to black, in their shape - more like stripes, as well as the presence of a light central band and silvery veins. This variety is the most demanding to care, therefore it is rarely found in home gardening.

Maranta reed

As a houseplant is grown another species - Maranta reed. It is a shrub plant up to 1.3 m high. The length of the leaves is up to 25 cm. The shape of the leaves is elongated with pointed ends. Leaf color: the upper side is dark green with asymmetrical light spots, the lower side is dark green with a bluish tinge, pubescent. The flowers are white.

Maranta bicolor

Among the indoor plants, occasionally you can find Marantu bicolor, which is a separate species. She is often confused with Maranta Kerhoven. The main differences are this species does not form tubers, and the leaves on the back side are purple.

The length of the leaves is from 10 to 15 cm. The shape of the leaves is oval with slightly wavy edges. Leaf color: the upper side - on a green background - spots of dark green or brown shade, the lower side is reddish or purple, pubescent.

Maranta tricolor

The second name is tricolor. This is a perennial bush, an adult copy of which can reach a height of 30 cm and the same in width.

The tricolor leaves are oval, growing up to 12 cm, green above with a pattern of red veins, crimson below. Flowering in arrowroot tricolor delicate light purple flowers.

Choosing a place

Maranta loves the light, but he must be distracted. For growing advised to choose windowsills to the West or East, where there is sufficient light, and there is no direct sun.

If the arrowroot is placed in a place with a lot of sunlight, the leaves may begin to roll and shrink, and the pattern on them will be faded. In winter, arrowroot is better to additionally illuminate the lamp, for example, fluorescent.

Temperature

From late spring to autumn, the flower should be maintained at a temperature of 21-26 ° C. In the remaining months, the optimum temperature is 18-23 ° C. When lowering below 12 ° C, the plant may not survive.

Air for arrowroot needs medium humid. With increased dryness of the leaves will not be so decorative, the picture will not be clear, and the tips dry up.

The plant needs daily spraying with warm, settled water.

To moisten the soil, use only water at room temperature, which has been settled for several days. Maranta loves moderate watering. Do not allow overflow and overdrying.

Before a new irrigation should be checked that the earthen room was dry After watering in the saucer water should not remain. Excess water is important to drain. 1 time in 10-15 days to carry out feeding with complex means.

To plant or transplant, take ready-made universal soil from the store, or prepare it yourself, combining in the same proportions:

Then some charcoal and coniferous soil should be added to this soil substrate.

There is another option. The mix includes peat (1,5), garden soil (3) and coarse sand (1), as well as some charcoal.

Fortunately for some flower growers, frequent transplanting marante is not required, as it grows rather slowly. Most often, it takes 2 years from transplant to transplant using a larger pot.

When transplanting a plant, they simply transfer to another pot, filling up the empty places with a new earthen mixture. The right time is March and April. Do not forget about the drainage.

Cuttings

Experts advise to carry out this process in May or June. For this:

  1. Cut a stalk from the shoot (7-8 cm) with a pair of leaves,
  2. Put in a glass with warm soft water,
  3. In a month, roots will grow from cuttings,
  4. To land in a tank with peat,
  5. Cover the sprout from above with a jar or place it in a plastic bag so that there is a greenhouse effect,
  6. Periodically, the soil must be ventilated and moistened.

Diseases and their causes

  • Cold and overflow lead to rotting of the stems and roots - to eliminate the problem, remove the flower into heat and reduce watering,
  • When infected with Putin's mite, the leaves gradually dry, become covered with sticky webs and fall off - special insecticides or folk remedies will help to get rid of the parasite
  • Yellowed leaves with dry tips signal dryness of the air - to solve the problem, humidify the air more and spray the plant daily,
  • The faded drawing will tell about the sun surplus - in order to acquire past clarity and decorativeness, place a container with a flower with a shaded place.

Maranta - not simple, but very beautiful indoor flower. If you follow all the important conditions and requirements of care for him, he will decorate the interior of the house for more than one year.

General characteristics of arrowroot

In nature, this herbaceous perennial grows abundantly in the swampy forests of central and southern America, in Western India. There are different types of arrowroot there, but they are not very different from each other. The main signs by which you can recognize the culture:

  • height - usually up to 30 cm
  • root - branched, oblong shaped tubers appear on thin processes,
  • shoots - creeping or erect,

  • leaves are large, 5–9 cm wide, 9–15 cm long. The shape is broad, oval, oblong or lanceolate. They can have a variety of colors, ranging from whitish to dark green and reddish, with dots or lines,
  • flowers rarely appear, usually in late May or summer. They look like panicles of white, lilac and other tones.

Attention! In any type of arrowroot, the upper part of the leaf plate is very different from the lower.

If one of them is bright green, then the other is dominated by pink or yellowish shades. In addition to the motley variety of color combinations, the foliage of arrowroot is famous for another feature: the change of direction. In a good climate, with proper care, the plates are arranged horizontally. But at the slightest discomfort, they fold together and rise vertically. Religious British such a picture reminded folded palms of believers who read a prayer. Therefore, they gave the marante the apt nickname "praying grass."

Description of the most famous species

  1. Maranta leuconeura or Belozhilchataya. Densely found not only in the tropical forests of Brazil, but also on the windowsills of domestic summer residents. Large leaves are shaped like a heart. Their outer side is painted in dark green, with a silver stripe in the center. White veins are clearly visible on the surface. The bottom of the leaf plate has a reddish tint. This species is considered one of the most common and unpretentious.

Attention! In total, there are about 30 genera and about 4 hundred species of arrowroot.

Reviews of flower growers on varieties and culture

Many lovers of indoor plants praise arrowroot for many positive qualities:

However, growers warn that the culture is not without flaws. They are mainly associated with the care, because the flower:

  • afraid of hitting the direct rays of the sun,
  • requires maintaining high humidity. It is necessary to periodically spray the bush, otherwise it will lose its decorative properties,

  • may fade in winter, and then grow back, closer to the spring-summer season,
  • reacts poorly to drying out of the soil.

It is known that domestic plants purify the air and affect the microclimate of the room as a whole. Elegant maranth protects the house from domestic differences and quarrels. It reduces the degree of increased excitability, soothes the nerves, helps to solve problems with sleep, and discharges the situation. It is believed that the flower even protects against diseases associated with hypothermia: acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory viral infections, etc. Therefore, those who believe in the miraculous properties of indoor flowers, it is very useful to have an unpretentious arrowroot on the home window sill.

Description of arrowroot

From the photo of arrowroot you can see that the plant is low, most often not exceeding 20 centimeters. Undoubtedly, the unique color of the leaves attracts attention - the smooth basic background has streaks that are colored in a reddish tint with light spots in the center.

The foliage itself can be completely different shapes: linear, oblong or oval in structure. The shape of the leaf depends on the type of flower.

By the leaves of arrowroot, it is possible to recognize its general condition, that is, with a lack of natural light, the foliage stretches to the top and comes into contact with each other. It is thanks to this fact that the plant received the name “Praying Grass” among the people.

Basic rules for the care of arrowroot

Maranta at home will require enough attention. Experienced growers recommend watering the plant as often as possible, since it needs moisture. But do not overdo it with watering.

So, in the summer you should water the soil in a pot at least once every two days, keeping the soil constantly moist, but avoiding stagnant water.

It is better to make watering with settled soft water, keeping the room temperature.

Maranta, like any other indoor plant, requires regular feeding. For this you need to use a special solution for home flowers. It is reasonable to apply fertilizer during growth. In the summer and spring months, it is recommended to fertilize arrowroot no more than twice every 30 days.

How and when does the arrow blossom?

Observing competent care, the plant arrowroot will surely delight you with flowering. Among the leaves will appear a thin flower with a white, pink or yellow flower.

Florists recommend cutting off inflorescences, as they have a not very attractive appearance and, moreover, can weaken health and growth.

Even after quite a long flowering (2-3 months), arrowroot has the peculiarity of throwing off the leaves and leaving for a dormant period for several months. Resting plant, usually from the middle of the autumn period to the end of winter.

After getting out of sleep in some species of arrowroot is recommended to completely trim the foliage. After about 40 days, a strong root system of the plant will produce new, brighter and more beautiful leaves.

Rules for transplanting and breeding arrowroot

Florists recommend replanting an arrowroot flower to a permanent pot immediately after it has been purchased. It is better to choose a pot of small size, since the root system of the plant is small.

At the bottom of the pot the first layer should be expanded clay or any similar drainage. It is better to prepare the soil mixture yourself:

  • 3 pieces of leafy ground.
  • 1 part coniferous soil.
  • 1, 5 - peat.
  • 1 - dry humus or manure.
  • 1 part of sand.
  • A little dry ash.

Before transplanting, you need to remove the extra shoots, cutting them to one internode. You should not fertilize the soil at all in the first 30 days after transplantation. Consider that at greater humidity, the flower will root more quickly in the new capacity.

Propagation of arrowroot

Maranta, as a rule, breeds only in two ways:

Division of a large bush

It should carefully remove the flower from the pot, dividing its roots into several parts, so that on each of them there is a growing point and the root itself.

Having planted a new shoot, it is worth pouring warm water over the ground, creating a greenhouse effect for the plant, putting a plastic bag on top of it. When there are new layers, the greenhouse must be removed.

Maranta: home care

Watering and humidity

I deliberately began to describe the care for arrowroot from this point. For he is perhaps the most important in the care. The plant comes from a tropical, swampy area with high humidity. The same conditions it requires at home. But with irrigation you should not be especially zealous, although it is recommended to keep the ground constantly in a wet state, this should not be done. Let the top layer of the earth dry up a bit, then water it. The regularity of irrigation of arrowroot depends largely on the air temperature at which it is contained. In winter, when the plant is resting, watering is reduced.

But the air humidity is given maximum attention. When dry air arrowroot quickly wither. Moreover, unlike most indoor plants that prefer moist air, but are not sprayed in the winter, it is possible (and necessary) to spray the arrowroot throughout the year. For irrigation and spraying, use only well-settled and preferably soft water at room temperature. But only spraying will not be enough, especially in winter, when the air in the house is dry. The most common way to increase humidity is to put the pot in a pan with wet clay (for information on how to increase the humidity of the air, read here). It will be very cool if a couple of times a month you give her a shower under warm water.

Lighting

The second most important item for the care of arrowroot. By choosing a place for her, we must approach carefully. This plant does not like bright lighting. In any case, the window sill is not at all the right place for it. Direct sunlight is out of the question, they are absolutely excluded. It would be possible to call arrowroot a plant for the penumbra, but only no one has yet clearly defined the term "penumbra." Let's just say: the pier between two windows, the angle at the window, the wall opposite to the window - are quite suitable for placing arrowroot. It grows very well with artificial light. Therefore, she is so loved by florists-designers in the design of offices. The main thing to know is that with an excess of light, arrowroot leaves turn pale and diminish in size, with insufficient light, the pattern becomes blurry and the leaf itself also fades. If you notice these signs, pick another place for the plant.

By the way. Marantu tricolor is often called the "prayer plant." If the light is low, then it raises the leaves - "hands" to the top, closing them into the socket. If there is enough light, then the leaves take a horizontal position. With the natural change of time of day, this is a normal and very impressive sight, but if the leaves do not want to go down even during the day, look for another place for it.

Feeding

Caring for arrowroot implies mandatory feeding. BUT! You can not get involved in them. She is very sensitive to feedings. You can feed it with complex mineral fertilizer for decorative leafy plants, planting them, not as recommended in the instructions, but on the basis of a gram of fertilizers per liter of water. A good result is the alternation of mineral and organic fertilizers, but the concentration of organic matter should also be at least halved. Marantas are fertilized twice a month, from the beginning of the growing season until the beginning of autumn. Winter dressing is also allowed, but the concentration of fertilizers should be even lower, and the frequency less often (every 30-40 days).

Temperature

Maranta is a heat-loving plant. Moreover, it does not tolerate temperature drops and drafts. Although it is recommended to lower the temperature for it in winter (right up to +18 degrees!), Keep it in a warm room, at a temperature of + 20-25 degrees. Especially try to avoid overcooling the roots, the lower limit, this is the very "frosty" +18 degrees. Of course, in the summer of arrowroot plant "restricted to leave", you can not take it to fresh air.

Transfer

Пересадка любого растения дело серьезное и ответственное для любого комнатного растения. Поэтому пересадка маранты особо ничем не отличается. It is held at intervals of once every two years in early spring (with the beginning of active development), in a pot of a slightly larger size. Given the fact that the roots of arrowroot develops in breadth, then the pot should be chosen wide and not particularly high.

Land, novice florist, in order to avoid the risk of a mistake, I would recommend to buy ready-made. But if you decide to prepare it yourself, then keep in mind that alkaline, containing limestone, earth, is not suitable for transplanting arrowroot. It should be slightly acidic. We can recommend a simple recipe for such a dough.

It is highly desirable to add a little coniferous land (it will add "sourness") and charcoal to the mix.
