One of the most popular garden beds has always been strawberry, as it is difficult to find someone who would not like these sweet and fragrant berries that appear in mid-June. In order to annually receive a quality crop, the plant must be properly maintained. Without this, strawberry bushes will wither and gradually disappear. To care for strawberries in the fall everyone who grows it on the site has to learn.

Processing strawberry beds before winter consists of several stages. It is not difficult, but must be carried out in a certain sequence and in optimal time. Autumnal care starts from the moment when the fruiting phase of the crop is fully completed, and stretches for a considerable time. All work on the care of strawberries consist of the following stages:

  • trimming
  • weeding,
  • loosening
  • fertilizer application
  • watering,
  • soil renewal
  • transfer,
  • shelter

If you disrupt the sequence in the care, you can only hurt your plantings and in the summer do not get enough berries.

Cut leaves

Regarding pruning strawberry bushes, there are 2 radically opposite opinions. One group of gardeners is 100% sure that cutting the leaves helps to improve the condition of the bush, while the latter with the same firmness state that this is harmful for strawberries, as the plant loses the possibility of photosynthesis due to the absence of leaves.

Plant growers who deal with culture professionally believe that cutting the bushes for autumn strawberry care is necessary, but only reasonable. You can not just take and strip the strawberries of all the leaves. It is necessary to remove only those leaves that are sick, dry up or damaged by pests. Healthy leaves are not worth cutting.

If it is decided, nevertheless, to completely cut off strawberry bushes, then this should be done at the end of August in order for the plants to grow to the first frost and leave for the winter in good condition. You can not use the braid for cutting. Cut the leaves should be sharp scissors, which will cut, not tear the leaves. Stems can not be touched. Cut only need sheet plates. Leaves remaining after pruning, if they are sick, are thrown away. Healthy leaves can be applied as mulch.

Weeding and loosening

To weed and loosen the beds should be immediately after pruning. To do this, first, with the help of a small shovel, they cultivate the land between the rows to a depth of no more than 10 cm. Loosening the soil around the bushes is carried out with a small hopper, and very carefully, so as not to damage the roots of the bush, since it can die. When loosening strawberries at the same time and spud, sprinkle with earth the base of the bush.

Weed beds simultaneously with hilling. From the ground it is necessary to remove all the weeds along with the root. After weeds are weeded out, the ground between the rows is covered with sawdust or, if they are absent, with small dry sprigs. This will prevent the growth of new weeds. If they do appear, then after 30 days weeding is repeated.

Fertilizers and watering

Strawberry processing in the fall without fertilizing is inadequate. Feeding is carried out using organic and mineral compounds. The best option is chicken droppings (can be replaced by pigeon or duck, but in a lower concentration). The source of mineral substances is wood ash, which is easy to get on your backyard. If you want to use mineral fertilizers, you must use potash salt or superphosphate.

Fresh bird droppings are bred in a ratio of 1:20 chicken and 1:25 duck or pigeon and watered with the resulting composition of strawberries at the rate of 1 l per 1 bush.

If you apply horse manure, then it must be laid out near the bushes. When watering and in the rain, it will dissolve, it will allow the plants to get food as long as possible.

Soil renewal

It is necessary to update the soil if you have to grow strawberries in the same place for more than 2 years. To do this, slightly raise the bed with the help of humus taken on the compost heap. You can also make peat in the soil, having an additional loosening.

Bushes replanting

Autumn care for strawberries also implies a transplant. Bushes are used at the age of 1-2 years, divided into several plants, or antennae. If you do not update the beds, the plant grows old. In old bushes, the yield drops sharply, the berries become small and sour. Strawberries should be planted and transplanted in autumn, as the soil during this period is as wet as possible and at the same time is well heated. The optimal time for landing is from mid-August to mid-September. Strawberries will have time to settle down in a new place and over-winter quality, and in the spring berries will show off on the bushes.

The drawbacks of the autumn transplant are the risks of early frosts and a snowless winter. In this case, most of the bushes will die.

When preparing for the winter, strawberries should be covered if there is a risk of scarcity of expected snow cover or severe frosts. Mainly 2 materials are used for this. The choice of means of wrapping beds remains for the owner:

  1. The branches of coniferous trees - they have good thermal insulation, and the bushes beneath them breathe easily. It is necessary to cover spruce branches all the rows completely, leaving only the spaces between them open. Under the branches of the bushes will not shed, and therefore will not die in the thaw.
  2. Covering non-woven materials with a density of 60g / m2 - fabric is stretched onto the arches. Such a shelter allows you to create a greenhouse, in which even in cold weather the temperature will be 2-3 degrees higher than outside. It is impossible to cover the material without arches, because the soil will freeze over it because of this. This feature is important to consider.

Sometimes gardeners cover strawberry beds with tops that remain after harvesting carrots and beets. To do this is undesirable, as the bushes under it can defrost. This happens for the reason that the tops are gradually compacted and cease to pass air.

Having provided your strawberry with the right care in autumn, you can be sure that in the new season you will receive a high yield with excellent taste.

September - time to prepare strawberries for winter

In September, the leaves of strawberries are already beginning to grow. During this period, the plant prepares for future fruiting, so care must be careful. If strawberries have not yet been fed, then it's time to start them. At the same time, it is necessary to water the bushes so that the nutrient fluid flows towards the root system. Watering strawberries continues until autumn, trying to sate the plant with moisture.

In addition, in the autumn it is necessary to conduct a series of works on preparing strawberries for the winter. First of all, you need to qualitatively mulch the soil and aisle. Naked land without snow and frost have a detrimental effect on the condition of the bushes. In regions where such a winter is not uncommon, bushes should be especially carefully covered.

Straw will serve as a good shelter for the winter period. It will not only hold the snow in the garden, but also serve as organic mulch. If there is no such material, you can use peat with compost. Some gardeners use dry leaves, spruce branches, corn stalks to shelter the beds. The thickness of the mulch layer must be at least 5 cm.

For those who do not want to mess with organic shelter, today there are enough cover materials on sale that are successfully used on strawberries.

Summing up

In fact, taking care of strawberries in the fall is not so difficult. Enough to loosen the beds, pour the land, cut off the old foliage, feed and cover. The harvest of the next year and the health of the planting directly depend on all the work performed.

It is important to remember that in addition to all works strawberries need rejuvenation, which is carried out once every four years. If this is not done, the amount of the harvest will noticeably decrease. The best predecessors for strawberries are spicy herbs, mustard, siderata, onions, garlic and beans. It is highly undesirable to plant a plant after potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers and cabbage, as well as after flowers.

Autumn transplant combined with the preparatory work and carried out no later than September. It is important to remember that the plant needs sufficient time for rooting.

And a little about the secrets.

The story of one of our readers Irina Volodina:

My eyes were especially frustrating, surrounded by large wrinkles plus dark circles and swelling. How to remove wrinkles and bags under the eyes completely? How to cope with swelling and redness? But nothing is so old or young man as his eyes.

But how to rejuvenate them? Plastic surgery? I found out - no less than 5 thousand dollars. Hardware procedures - photorejuvenation, gas-liquid pilling, radio lifting, laser facelift? Slightly more accessible - the course costs 1.5-2 thousand dollars. And when to find all this time? Yes, and still expensive. Especially now. Therefore, for myself, I chose another way.
