At the beginning of the 20th century in Ukraine, in Nikolaev (then in the Russian Empire), this interesting breed appeared. Long before this time about the serpastine pigeons was known only in Turkey and Syria. These countries, by the way, have not decided where the breed was bred for the first time.

Many wanted to get a sickle-headed pigeon into their dovecote, therefore selection works were carried out with this species. It happened in the city of Ochakovo, Nikolaev region. Three more subspecies were obtained there:

In the process of selection, only those birds were selected whose flight qualities were unsurpassed, which favorably distinguished them among their relatives.

Features

The specific flap of wings is the main advantage of these pigeons. It is believed that the climate of the Black Sea coast influenced the further development and improvement of their flight abilities.

Strong sea winds, often interfering with the free soaring of other birds, have contributed to the development of strong muscles in sickle-headed pigeons, as well as resilient feathers on the tail and in the wings, therefore, these birds are very hardy, able to quickly adapt to changes in the direction of air flow.

The bend of the so-called sickle in pigeons is insignificant and pronounced, i.e. feathers at the ends of the wings can be only slightly curved or close in a ring.

In addition, some of them are able to rotate the wings, which is popularly called "crowbar".

If the name “Ochakov serpasty” or even “Ochakov vyvortnye” occurs, it is all about the same pigeons. Ochakovskim began to call them because of the place of their distribution and work on improving the breed. Exports, however, because their extreme feathers, due to which the stroke occurs, turn out during the flight, touching the tips. The result is a solid circle.

Due to the fact that the wings can be folded in this way, the birds have specific flight characteristics.

Sickle-headed pigeons without circles hover smoothly and very easily, horizontally in relation to the ground. From the side of their flight seems somewhat slow.

A distinctive feature of the described pigeons is an elongated massive body (this is, in general, small parameters, about 40 cm). The head and legs of the birds are small. Paws grow to only 7-8 cm and are not covered with a feather. In profile, a rounded head is arched. Breast too narrow.

The body of the bird is covered with thick plumage, especially on the wings, where along the length they are the same as in the tail. In the fourth joint of the wing there is a bulge. It gives them a unique feature in the form of bends.

Color can be very diverse:

  • white
  • black
  • gray
  • ashen,
  • with shades of red, blue, orange, etc.

It does not affect the belonging to the breed.

The main sign of the species are the eyes. Just like in Rostov, for example, they can be exceptionally light. The lighter the better. Otherwise, the purity of the breed is not in question.

Lifestyle and nutrition

By nature, serpastine pigeons are very energetic birds, but at the same time completely undemanding. Being able to adapt even to unfavorable conditions of detention and climate, they are unusually viable. So to breed them under the force of any novice pigeon. They breed well and nurse their offspring.

However, there is still one condition, without which it is extremely difficult for pigeons to survive: they need space, therefore balconies, attics and other rooms with limited space are not for them. Dovecote must be kept clean and transmit light.

Flying pigeons can fly in a flock, however, prefer single flights or pair.

They feed pigeons with mixed food, where wheat constitutes a small part, and legumes and millet constitute a large part. This is due to the small length of their intestines. For this reason, it should be easily digestible food.

Clean breed today

Although the breed of sickle-headed pigeons is one of the most popular with breeders, there is a gradual deterioration in its flight qualities. This is due to the fact that the bird needs a regular and well-conducted training.

Plus, pigeon breeders often overlook the fact that such pigeons do not pair with other breeds. In the offspring as a result, the years deteriorate markedly, its peculiarity is lost, and the individual becomes not so interesting.

Bred birds are not very quickly oriented in space. Rising to a great height, they sometimes manage to return to the pigeon-house only in 2-3 days, or even not at all. Also, being in the clouds, they easily lose their balance.

By the way, this is another reason for their crossing with other species: golubevody trying to bridge the gap with poor memory and coordination.

History of origin

The exact history of the emergence of serpastus pigeons is not yet known. The breed was bred in Nikolaev at the end of the XIX - beginning of the XX century. Supposedly, for the creation of the breed were used pigeon from Turkey and Syria, as well as local birds.

Stimulus for breeding was an unusual flight of these birds. The wings of a pigeon in flight form the shape of a sickle, swinging feathers turn inside out, which gave the name to the breed - sickles, or inversion pigeons.

Appearance

Exterior crescent pigeon:

  1. A large pigeon with a weight of about 300 g and a body length of about 30–40 cm. It has a streamlined elongated body with an inclined body setting. In sickles, the pectoral muscles are well developed. The transition of the body to the tail is harmonious, smooth. Chest convex shape. The back of the pigeon is straight, somewhat elongated. Legs are small, strong, non-plucked, red-brown or gray.
  2. Feather cover thick, dense, usually two-colored. The wings are equal in length with the tail. The average length of the wing is about 30 cm. Fly feathers are long, thin, collected in a bun. Color may be different. The tail plumage is 12–16 white feathers.
  3. The head is small, rounded and elongated with a proportional small beak. Ceres can be any shade, from white to black. Small eyes of golden color or brown with a pearl shade. Eyes are considered the standard of purity of the breed - the lighter they are, the less impurities from other rocks. The neck is relatively short, with lush plumage.

Lifestyles and habits

The breed is special poor terrain orientation, because of which birds may lose their way to the pigeon house. Attempting to minimize this deficiency by crossing with other breeds leads to the disappearance of a special flight pattern, so it is not yet possible to correct this deficiency.

Sicklefish, like other species, form a pair once for a lifetime. When creating birds, pairs of breeders are trying to consolidate the breed signs and, if possible, change the shortcomings.

Birds have an energetic temperament, high activity and vitality. They are unpretentious to the conditions of detention, food and can be grown even by beginners. Representatives of the breed are easy to train, while preferring morning classes.

Breeding

Pigeons are monogamous birds that form a pair once. During the marriage ceremony, the male takes care of the female, coos loudly, fluffs feathers, dances. To build a nest in the wild, a couple finds an inaccessible place - under the roof of the roof, in an unattended attic, etc. In order for the female to not interfere with the dovecot, she needs to create a nest with a small window. The male brings building material to the nest - twigs, blade of grass, and the female equips it.

Birds are able to mate year-round, so the female lays about 7 clutches throughout the year, and both parents incubate them for 16–19 days, replacing each other. In the clutch there are 1-2 white eggs.

The hatched chicks are blind and completely helpless. The first days they are fed "pigeon milk", which is a mixture of protein-based nutrients produced in the goiter. As the chicks grow, plant seeds are added to the diet. After 35–37 days, the young are fully ready for independent living and can fly. If the pigeon breeder is going to train a new generation, then at the age of 35 days the chicks are taken away from the pigeon-house of their parents to a new place of residence and begin training.

Is it possible to keep in captivity

Pigeons need a separate room. In the wild, they nest in small caves, rock crevices. Today there are 3 types of pigeon houses:

Freemen is a closed room from which pigeons can fly out through small manholes. The light source in this room is narrow windows. If you attach an open-air cage to the freemen, in which the pets can walk, but cannot leave it, you will get a dovecot with feeding grounds.

It is important that predators, wild birds and rodents could not enter the room. It should be clean and dry inside. Unlike farm birds, pigeons do not need additional lighting or heating. They tolerate cold and can even live in an aviary, if it does not get rain and snow. The door to the room is equipped with a threshold, so as not to crush the bird sitting on the floor.

The dovecote equipment consists of boxes-nests with an obligatory roof and a small entrance, perches, perches, feeders and water bowls. Perch should be smooth, painted. Its width is 2.5–3.5 cm, the cross section is round or rectangular: it should be convenient for grasping with a paw. The width of prisad perches is 30–40 cm. Mineral feed, grain and greens should be poured into separate feeders. Housekeeping consists of:

  • cleaning litter - once every 1-2 weeks,
  • washing feeders and drinkers weekly,
  • dovecote disinfection at least 1 time per quarter.

The presence of litter will greatly simplify the cleaning of the litter. You will also need equipment for cleaning and cooking feed.

External characteristics

Serpasto inverted pigeons attracted the attention of breeders due to their specific flight. The view is not adapted for long flights at low altitude. During the flight, the wings of pigeons take the form of a sickle or month. This is also supported due to their appearance.

At the present time there is a tendency to strengthen breeding work in relation to improving the quality of flight. Serpasto inversion pigeons often lose their balance and fall in the process of flight. Mixing species led to the loss of their distinctive abilities by Nikolaev. Therefore, the selection of this species has led to undesirable results.

Cultivation carried out with Ochakov pigeons allowed to derive the following subspecies:

  1. kalachat pigeons
  2. music pigeons,
  3. harkushinsky pigeons.

The appearance of Nikolaev is characterized by a massive physique. Their head grows to small size, just like legs. Plumage wings densely located. Their length is equal to the length of the tail. The presence of a bulge in the fourth joint gave the Ochakov pigeons the difference in movement. The color of feathers is very different. But belonging to the species is explained by the color of the eyes. Purebred Nikolaev pigeons have bright eyes.

At the age of two months, the preparatory stage of the rearing of Ochakov pigeons begins. At this time, they are taught a peculiar style of movement. The main difference between pigeons is the absence of circular movements at the time of the flight.

Serpasto inverted pigeons are characterized by short legs and a small head.

Ochakov pigeons are accustomed to making a long movement, preferring single movements. The best time for learning birds is morning and evening hours. It is not recommended to use the night for training if you do not want to lose the bird. Thus, the flight of sickle pigeons is produced.

Origin

The breed was bred in ancient times whether in Syria or in Turkey, scientists still have not given an exact answer. And only at the beginning of the 20th century they appeared in the Ukrainian city of Nikolaev. Birds interested pigeon lovers and quickly spread through the territory of Ukraine. In the town of Ochakovo, the pigeon breeders Kirichenko and Krayzer were engaged in selection work and brought out three species of birds:

  • Harkushinsky,
  • kalachovsky,
  • muzikinsky.

They selected the best individuals, carried out the crossing, were engaged in the improvement of flight abilities, as a result of which the birds mastered new elements of tricks. The birds became the pride of the city and received the name Ochakov inversion pigeons.

Serpast pigeons in Zimovniki

This is one of the most famous species that is common among pigeon breeders. They are bred everywhere because of the unusual flight that they make. So, and Kulagin N. I., a resident of the Rostov region p. Zimovniki, has its own dovecote. He not only admires the flight of these wonderful birds, but removes them on video and puts it on the Internet, collecting a lot of views. In flight, pigeons soar one by one, in pairs and in a group, with a strong wind beautifully rising and falling, or even hovering in the sky.

Conclusion

The breed of serpastic pigeons begins to degenerate gradually. This is mainly due to insufficient work regarding long training flights. The peculiarity of the breed is that its representatives are not adapted to long-distance flights due to the special structure of the wings.

Inverted poorly oriented in space, often can not find the way back home and lost. Therefore, they are crossed with other species, and this leads to the fact that the flight of serpastic pigeons loses its features.

Breed specificity

Serpast pigeons, perhaps, one of the most famous breeds among domestic pigeon breeders. It is difficult to name the city in which they would not be bred. The reason for such wide distribution was the unusual flight that the bird makes. In it, she seems not only to flap her wings, but also tries to turn them out. From this breed has a second name - inversion pigeons. Such a bend of the wing reminds some of a crescent or sickle.

Flight features do not allow long-haul flights of these birds. Often they prefer to rise high above the house, hang over it and gradually lower.

In today's time, it can be said that the breed is slowly degenerating or is going through difficult times. Her lovers continue to actively buy her, but serpast pigeons need not only care, but also long training sessions that are not carried out sufficiently. In addition, some pigeon breeders make a parish of sickle birds with other pigeons. Brood comes out not as high quality as the parent. First of all it affects the beauty of the flight, which is not so pretentious and special.

Perhaps the reason lies in the fact that not everyone likes turnout pigeons. They can not fly long distances and poorly oriented in space due to the characteristics of the wings. Sometimes because of this, pigeons cannot return to the pigeon house, they often get lost and disappear. In order to level these qualities of sickles mixed with other breeds.
