It always seemed to me that in order to have such a beautiful plant as a thuja at home on a personal plot, you need to spend a lot of money.

After all, these plants are quite expensive. But it turns out that it is quite possible to grow such a beautiful woman on her own without spending money on it. Since I managed it, I want to tell you how to do it on my own and completely free of charge.

If you have a dream to grow a luxurious and luxurious tui on the plot, then the cutting method will be an excellent solution that can be implemented without problems and costs. And subject to the rules will give an excellent result.

Thuja can be propagated in two ways: by means of seeds and grafting.

Reproduction using seeds has no popularity, since this method is longer, and it is possible to see the result of your work only after a few years. While breeding thuy cuttings is much faster and more convenient.

It is best to reproduce tui by cuttings in spring or autumn. This method is the most simple and effective. Its advantage is the ability to preserve varietal qualities, and the opportunity to get a full-fledged small tree in a couple of years.

With this method, there are drawbacks, since such trees are not very hardy.

How to cut cuttings Tui

Strong and healthy individuals are suitable for this purpose, since harvested cuttings from diseased plants will also be weak and diseased. In addition, the cuttings, not cut from upstream shoots, can grow not upright, but have a curvature of the trunk. Therefore, the best material will be the twigs cut from the apical part of the plant.

As a material for grafting one should take shoots already woody, 2 or 3-year-old, grown to 10-15 centimeters, cut from the ends of the shoots. Older plants lose their ability to form the root system.

It is recommended not to cut off the branch for cutting, but to tear off along with the heel. This is a piece of last year's bark, which contains nutrients accumulated from last year. For the best rooting of cuttings, it is these branches that are most suitable.

Roots of thuja can be rooted at different times of the year, but the autumn period is considered the most promising. Although rooting occurs faster in cuttings harvested in the spring. For this we need to wait for the formation of the root system for about three months.

But the roots of the Tui, chopped in the fall, will have to wait much longer. These plants can take root only next year.

Nevertheless, these seedlings suffer less from water shortage, because sap flow stops in the fall. Consequently, a greater number of plants can take root. Although rooting will take longer.

The collection of material is best done in October, when the leaf fall is already over. A day for harvesting cuttings is better to choose overcast. And if the thuja is pyramidal, then the cuttings are better to choose from the side shoots. Of great importance is the appearance of the top of the cutting, its color should be green.

Starting a further stage of rooting, you should remove small branches and leaves to a height of 3-4 centimeters from the bottom. Excess needles at the bottom of the cutting can further contribute to decay, so you can even slightly shorten the needles from the bottom of the stem.

After that, the cuttings are placed in a solution of a root formation stimulator for 10–12 hours (for this “Epin” or “Kornevin” will be suitable).

Keep cuttings can not, because they deteriorate and become unsuitable for rooting. If it is not possible to start rooting right away, they are wrapped in a wet cloth and stored in a cool place.

For rooting thuja cuttings, light soil with fairly good drainage is best suited. Very good in this sense, the usual river sand. It is also possible to prepare a soil mixture by mixing peat with sand and leaf earth in equal proportions.

For planting cuttings use a small depth of capacity, which must necessarily have good drainage and be breathable. If you use ordinary sand as a soil, then it is very important to boil it well for at least five minutes first, and then cool it.

In addition, in the sand, and in the soil mixture before planting should be added 3% solution of potassium permanganate, mixing it with the substrate.

As a drainage it is possible to lay expanded clay or small pebbles on the bottom of the tank. Then, the prepared soil mixture or boiled sand is poured on top.

Rooting cuttings

The rooting process itself can be reduced to the following instructions:

  • Cut thuja before planting are processed in a growth stimulator,
  • Insert the twigs in the prepared soil at an angle of 45 degrees, deepening 1.5-2 centimeters into the ground,
  • When planting observe the distance between seedlings of at least five centimeters,
  • After planting, the soil is slightly compacted and irrigated,
  • Capacity with cuttings cover with a film or plastic bag,
  • Alternatively, you can use a plastic cup, covering the top with another such glass.

If the rooting process goes well, then after some time after planting the cuttings in the ground, you can see the appearance of young shoots on the branches.

Non-standard rooting method

You can also root the cuttings in a non-standard way - in potatoes. After all, the potato contains nutrients and starch, which contribute to the successful rooting of the cutting.

For this purpose it is necessary to choose fresh and healthy potatoes. They are thoroughly washed and removed the eyes, and then nails are made recesses of about 4 centimeters in length, which put the prepared cuttings of thuja.

Then, a fertile substrate is poured into the prepared containers, in which potatoes with cuttings are instilled.

Sprig covered with a plastic bottle, which is pre-cut the bottom. The cap from the bottle is then periodically removed, and the plant is watered through the hole.

Rooting cuttings in water is also possible, but this method is not very effective.

Caring for plants until planting in a permanent place involves the observance of a certain humidity and temperature content.

An indispensable condition is high humidity, not less than 70%, and also air temperature - 20-23 degrees. In addition, it is necessary to conduct regular airing of seedlings. The container with seedlings should be in a well-lit place, but at the same time, the bright sun is dangerous for delicate young plants.

Watering plants should be carried out with maximum caution to prevent exposure "heels" and avoid wetting the needles.

It is best to use a spray gun to moisten the soil. In addition, it is necessary to water the plants only after the top layer of the soil dries out, since over-wetting can ruin young thujas.

With the onset of autumn, when the plants take root, they are transplanted into slightly larger containers, or into a special school - a bed allocated for this purpose in a secluded garden area.

When planting in containers prepare the nutrient mixture. To do this, mixed with peat garden soil in equal proportions.

The rest of the care will consist in timely watering, feeding and removal of weeds.

Before the onset of cold weather, young saplings must be covered to protect them from the winter cold. As covering material you can use spruce leaves, sawdust, fallen leaves.

With the onset of spring shelter with seedlings removed. At the same time, you must be completely sure that the frost will not return. Further care is carried out in the same way as before. And you can land young tui on a permanent place in two years.

Rooting cuttings can be another simple way. This will require: peat moss, plastic bag, baby diaper and root growth stimulator. The sequence of actions will be as follows:

  • Cooked in the fall to get the seedlings of the twigs should be placed for 12 hours in the root solution.
  • Spread the diaper so that the absorbent layer is on top.
  • Soak peat moss (sphagnum) with cold boiled water and place in the center of the diaper.
  • Lay the cuttings on top of the moss, leaving free space between them.
  • Bend the diaper so that its layers are between the heels.
  • Roll up the roll so that the heels are on one side, and the tops of the shoots peep out from the other.
  • Put the received roll in a plastic bag and hang it on the window or place it between the frames.
