General information

Growing geese at home

  • White plumage in adults and light down with a dark back in goslings.
  • Feather smooth, tight fit. The disadvantage is the presence of colored feathers.
  • The body is rounded, almost horizontal, slightly descending to the tail.
  • The back is medium long, wide.
  • Stomach with two folds.
  • The average length of the neck, set vertically with a bend in the back of the head.
  • The wings cover the back, but do not intersect.
  • Head neat, not heavy. Eyes blue, eyelid red color. Yellow-red straight beak tip.
  • Hocks are red-yellow, not long. The backbone is not rough. The shin is well developed, covered with lush plumage of the abdomen.
  • The live weight of the ganders is 6.5-7 kg., And the gooseneck is 5.5-6 kg. Geese more graceful and light.
  • Egg production 45-65 pcs per cycle of egg-laying, and for two cycles about 60-85 pcs from each goose.
  • Egg mass not less than 160 g, on average 160-180 g

The content of the Rhine geese are not demanding. They are good foragers, i.e. feed well from pastures. Normally grown in cages on the net floor when fattening to fatty liver. They have no specific diseases. Special requirements for feeding pedigree birds do not impose.

The Rhine breed of geese has a high egg productivity, although the fertilizing abilities of the gander are quite low. Thus, the fertility rate of one-year-old goose is 63-69%, in the second year less than 40% are obtained from it as fertilized eggs. At the same time, the remaining reproduction rates are quite good:

  • hatchability of goslings of the Rhine breed 65-70%,
  • safety of young stock 94-96%.

Geese rarely show the instinct of brooding (less than 5% of the total population). Therefore, the main method of obtaining goslings is incubation.

The advantages of breeding the Rhine breed geese

They have good taste and sufficient precocity. By the 2nd months, the weight of the goose is about 4 kg. Muscled carcasses with a low fat content. Such small sizes are in demand among buyers, since not everyone is ready to buy a big carcass.

To obtain a fatty liver, the Rhine geese are often fattened. With proper fattening, you can get a liver weighing about 300 g. Now it is quite a popular product that is in demand.

The market for goose eggs is small, but if you find a buyer, good egg productivity will be useful.

Overall impression

The Rhine breed of geese is harmoniously combined medium-sized birds, with good indicators of efficiency. Easy to maintain and grow. In the presence of pastures and cheap fodder (for example, puny grain), which are perfectly assimilated by the bird of this species, as well as taking into account its unpretentiousness, breeding and feeding the breed is a low-cost, but profitable business.

Growing geese for meat

Dilution of waterfowl in their own farm is easy. First you need to choose breed , which has a large percentage of meat output.

Goslings can be purchased in specialized farms or on the market. It is possible to breed chicks in the incubator. To do this, use the purchased material or eggs from domestic goose.

Growing conditions

Geese love to live in a company, so it is important to start breeding no less than with 2 individuals. From birth, goslings get used to each other and the stranger will not be allowed into their flock.

The maintenance of small chicks is allowed in small boxes or cages. But this space is enough for them only for a few days. Birds grow quickly and require large premises. Geese spend all the time on the floor. Therefore, care must be taken to create comfortable conditions in the room:

  • dry litter that changes every day
  • airing without drafts,
  • maintaining temperature,
  • lighting 10-15 hours a day.

The size of the room must match the number of individuals in the flock. If the birds are cramped, they will start to hurt, linger in growth. For geese equip walking near the house.

Adults are not afraid of the winter cold, so they walk in severe frosts. In the summer they can be driven out to the meadow for grazing. Follow the stay of the birds in the pasture should be carefully.

The owner of the farm is better to fence a certain area near the house so that the geese do not run away. Poultry are heavy and rarely fly. But the call of nature may be stronger, and they will find a way to freedom.

Food for geese

If other types of poultry are satisfied with ordinary dry food and water, then geese cannot develop normally without green food. Quite little goslings already know how to pinch the grass. Growing geese at home for meat is carried out in two ways:

  • in closed conditions,
  • with access to pasture.

The second method simplifies the cultivation of poultry. Feeding geese is carried out indoors or on a stationary range, and then they are sent to pasture. The ideal option is considered a meadow near the pond.

It is more difficult to grow waterfowl in closed yards, where there is no access to greenery and water. Conditions close to natural for the geese will have to create. For their active growth and development it is necessary:

  • install drinkers with plenty of clean water
  • organize a spacious place for swimming,
  • add chopped grass to the dry compound feed, grass meal in the winter time.

Geese do not sort out food and additives. But it is better to use herbs that contain a sufficient amount of vitamins: alfalfa, clover, nettle, cabbage leaves, beet tops and carrots. In the dosed quantity, birds add fresh vegetables to the diet, chopped on a grater - zucchini, beets, carrots, etc.

Goslings begin to feed dry feed with a small amount of greenery, add bone and fish meal, vitamins. Clean water in the drinkers should be constantly. Geese not only drink water, but also moisten feathers with their beaks, adjusting humidity and temperature.

Waterfowl feathers are greased and do not collect moisture. But the little goslings are covered with fluff, so they can get wet if the litter becomes wet. Change the litter in the room, clean the goose afterbirth on the run regularly.

Growing geese like a business

If the first steps are made, you can develop a business plan and breed geese for profit. Geese are considered a meat bird. They grow to 5-8 kg, of which the output is up to 65% pure meat.

In stores and in the market diet goose meat is in demand. Restaurants are happy to buy goose liver for cooking delicacy food.

Goose eggs are in demand on the market. They are bought for industrial and domestic incubators, used in cooking. Although the goose has low egg production - only up to 50 eggs per year, but it also brings a stable income to the farmer.

Additional earnings can be down and feathers collected during the processing of meat products. They establish sales of down and feather in pure form or are engaged in the manufacture of finished products: down blankets, pillows, etc.

Choosing a profitable direction in the poultry industry, it is necessary to start breeding geese at home. Unpretentious to the cultivation of poultry allow you to get a few pounds of fresh meat for personal consumption.

An enterprising person always has the opportunity to expand the scale of production in order to sell products that are in demand in the market. In any case, the cultivation of geese to a loss will not lead.

Choice of breed

Before proceeding with the cultivation of birds, determined with the breed and choose the most suitable option. What breeds of geese are the most popular:

  • Large gray geese. Their weight reaches 6-7 pounds. In this case, the female annually brings 40-50 eggs weighing 150-200 grams. This breed is different endurance.
  • Chinese geese. The weight of these birds is 5 kilograms. A goose a year gives 50-60 eggs of light weight - 130-170 grams. A special feature of geese is endurance, but at the same time they are quite aggressive.
  • Lindovskaya breed. Adults predominate in excellent weight by slaughter period - 7-8 kg. Laying eggs for a year give 45-50 eggs weighing 120-140 grams.
  • Kuban geese. This is a domestic breed, reaching up to 5.5 kilograms of live weight. The egg production of birds reaches 80-90 eggs weighing 120-150 grams.
  • Kholmogory geese. Breed that has a high rate of body weight, but low egg production. With a weight of up to 10 kilograms, 30-40 eggs weighing more than 200 grams are brought annually. Birds differ calm character, not aggressive.
  • Italian geese. Live weight of adults reaches 6-7 kilograms. During the year the bird brings up to 50 eggs.
  • Toulouse geese. This is a French breed, considered the largest - geese reach 10 or more kilograms. But they are distinguished by low egg production - geese give 30-40 eggs per year, but the weight of one egg often exceeds 200 grams. Despite the calm nature, inactivity, geese are famous for their rapid mass gain.
  • Emden geese. Breed that has a low egg production rate, but a decent weight gain, reaching 8-9 kilograms by the period when you can send animals to slaughter.
  • Rhine geese. This is a German breed. The weight of adults reaches 9 kilograms. For a year the goose gives about 40 eggs.

Large gray geese

Lindovskaya breed geese

Geese are birds that do not accept keeping in cages. This indicates the number of minimum livestock. It is possible to breed this bird if there is free space on the territory of the household for their walking - a pasture with a pond. Geese especially need space. They have to walk and move a lot. Since there are more blood vessels in their muscles, meat prevails in a darker shade than in chickens.

How to raise chicks with a hen?

It is believed that hatching chicks from an egg with a hen is more correct and better than growing birds in an incubator. But if there is only one hen on the farm, it can bring out a maximum of 13-14 heads due to the large size of the eggs. If you give preference to this method, to begin with, you are creating conditions.

What rules to follow:

  1. The room temperature should be 14-15 degrees.
  2. In the house should be dry. It is important to ventilate the room, but watch out for the lack of drafts. The nest is made up for the goose so that it is spacious. It is separated from other livestock and fenced.
  3. Keep hens apart from the rest of the geese, because the geese can, in the absence of the future mother, carry eggs into the already hatched clutch. Because of this, the period of getting the goslings will be significantly delayed, which may have a bad effect on the further development of the chicks.
  4. The nest should be dry and clean. If an egg is accidentally broken, immediately remove it and wipe out all the remaining ones. The partitions between the nests are important - since chicks will not roll other people's eggs to themselves, because geese have a strong maternal instinct. Due to the excess number of eggs in one nest, the goose simply cannot be heated all at once, there is also a risk that they can be damaged.
  5. When the hens return to the nests, each of them must take its place without confusing them.
  6. During incubation, the water in the future mother’s watering system is changed daily - this will prevent her from diarrhea. Geese are fed selective grain. Next, the hen will independently take care of all the processes during incubation.

The goose itself rolls the eggs in the nest for even heating. If for some reason the bird itself does not return to the nest 20 minutes after the food, it is driven into the house.

The first chicks appear on day 28. After that, they are taken from the nests and placed in a separate box, lighting up the lamp, creating the necessary temperature. After all the chicks appear, they are returned to the goose. In the first 48 hours, you can put a mother goose a few chicks from eggs that were bred in an incubator. Do it better in the evening.

Incubation of chicks

Breeding geese chicks in an incubator is quite a laborious process, since eggs not only contain a lot of fat, but also have large sizes. If more than 70% of the chicks hatch from one tab, this is considered an excellent result. Features breeding birds from eggs in the incubator:

  • Eggs are selected within 10 days, selecting only healthy, ideal-shaped eggs,
  • You need to warm up the incubator 3-4 hours before the bookmark, setting the temperature to 39 degrees,
  • you can not wash the eggs before laying, but allowed to disinfect them using a light solution of potassium permanganate,
  • The first 4-5 hours after being laid in the incubator can withstand temperatures up to 38 degrees, further reduce to 37.8, and in the last few days set to 37.5 degrees,
  • turn the eggs 6-8 times a day, preventing the shell from sticking to the mesh or form, as well as for uniform heating of the product.

In order to avoid the accumulation of harmful gases in the incubator, after 15 days of laying it is necessary to periodically open it for 10 minutes for ventilation.

Care, rearing and feeding chicks

It is important to care for the chicks from the first days of their life, because in the first days the formation and strengthening of the body's immune system occurs. Chicks should eat a balanced diet - this will allow to grow a large and healthy bird. For each period of growth and development make up your diet. It is necessary to give good water to the newly born goslings.

Bird care directly depends on their age, therefore not only a beginner, but also an experienced breeder needs to know all the requirements for the maintenance of such animals.

The first days of life

When caring for chicks, feed babies with boiled yolk of eggs for the first 5-7 days. This product is perfectly absorbed by the still fragile organism. Greens are also introduced into the diet, it is better if it is a green onion, which is finely chopped and mixed with the yolk. The first two days you need to feed the chicks at least 7 times a day. It depends on this whether it will be possible to grow healthy birds.

Drinkers choose such that the brood does not choke or drown in them. In the house where chicks are kept should be dry.

First weeks after birth

Gradually, with the growth of chicks, the diet is changed, including various herbs in it, adding them to feed. In addition to green onions, it is recommended to feed the birds with clover, alfalfa. In the drinkers should be clean water. Then gradually introduced into the diet of boiled potatoes and corn porridge. All the necessary nutrients and vitamins must be present in the food, so they put in the menu the sliced vegetables and root vegetables. When cooking porridges it is important to cook them, observing a thicker consistency. It is better if the animals get more dry food.

When the chicks are 21 days old, they are gradually transferred to pasture. It is advisable to give geese the opportunity to graze in a pen in the open air. Together with grass, the birds feed on mixed feed and crushed grain. New food in the diet is administered in small quantities, regularly increasing its dosage.

Drinking bowls should be replaced with more voluminous ones so that the goslings have the opportunity to swim in them - they become small ponds. For this, it is best to use bowls or pots, but in which low sides are provided - it will be convenient for birds to climb into them.

Care in the first months

At the moment when the goslings turn 1 month old, they begin to feed them intensively with compound feed, sunflower cake, grain and greens. Pour out these products on an open small reservoir without a strong current. In addition to grass, geese feed on algae, which has a beneficial effect on the development of birds and the collection of live weight. Be sure to give the birds more greenery - this will not only increase the mass, but also reduce the cost of maintenance.

Arrangement of the house

The main condition for the size of the room for birds is that it should not be closely. It is unacceptable to keep geese in cages, they must move. Be sure to provide free access to water and food. During the period of growing up of young stock, it is released into specially blocked pens in the open air. At night, the birds are in the house.

Depending on the number of livestock, pick the right room. In the early days, chicks must be kept in cardboard boxes on the veranda or in the summer kitchen. Then they must be given a place in the house, where there is good ventilation. It is required to warm the shed, freeing it from drafts and protecting it from the penetration of predatory animals, including rats.

It is recommended to use straw or chaff as bedding. Change litter every few days - it should be dry. This will help to protect weak chicks from hypothermia and various diseases. Prerequisite in the house is the presence of windows. Geese like to be indoors only during the period when they sleep.

After the birds turn 40 days, they are grazed near the reservoir. But until such time as they are strong enough to defend on their own, there must be a person nearby. As soon as the birds gain at least 2 kilograms of weight, they can be sent to grazing alone. It is better to release them early in the morning. At this time, the grass is not only nutritious, but also very juicy.

Geese not only find their own food, but also perfectly oriented, because they can find their own way home. Birds pruned wings - so they will not fly away.

Temperature and proper lighting

And after the chicks are three weeks old, transfer them to the mode of life in natural conditions (if the weather permits). In general, adult geese are considered hardy birds, because they have a lot of fat, a lot of live weight and warm plumage. They can freely withstand temperatures up to -15 degrees. Indoor lighting should be sufficient to maintain normal conditions with an increased daylight of more than 14 hours. For this it is important to use lamps.

Breeding birds

If the chicks that have just been born, weigh only 100 grams, then in 5 months their weight will reach 5-6 kilograms. On average, an animal gains more than 1 kilogram during a month. In order for the birds to be healthy and large, it is very important to carefully and carefully monitor their diet. Depending on the breed, the weight of adults varies between 4.5 and 10 kilograms or more.

If the main purpose of breeding is to obtain meat, then it is better to keep the birds until they reach the age of 2-3 months. During this period, they gain 50% of the mass of one-year-old adult birds. Next is the inhibition of weight gain.

So, it is very beneficial to breed and maintain these birds, since they not only grow quickly, but are also capable of giving large eggs, and you can also get high-quality fluff from them. But to grow successfully, you need to create all the necessary conditions for the birds. They should feel free and well fed.

Features of domestic geese

Domestic geese belong to a late-ripening species of bird. The first clutch of females begins not earlier than six months, but this figure depends on the breed, therefore, in certain species of birds, clutch can also begin at ten months of age.

Egg productiondepends on many factors:

  • Masonry begins in the spring a year after withdrawal when grown in conditions of natural daylight.
  • Nesting instinct, which is much more pronounced in geese than in chickens or ducks, also leads to a decrease in egg production.
  • In addition, the shedding period, which occurs in summer and autumn, also affects the intensity of masonry.

In our country, about twenty breeds of domestic geese are grown. Some of them were bred by artificial selection. Even with poor feeding and maintenance, birds have a low egg production rate, which, however, does not negatively affect their meat qualities and viability. Figure 1 shows representatives of the most popular types of different directions of productivity.

Figure 1. Common breeds: 1 - Kuban meat, 2 - Rhine for receiving fluff and feather, 3 - Italian (production of shukrok), 4 - Toulouse (production of fatty liver)

Pure meat include Kuban, Ural, Chinese, Italian and many others. Representatives of the Rhine, Emden and breed vistines give excellent down and feather, and from the Italian, you can get high quality skins for tailoring.

Toulouse, large gray and Landa are used for fattening for the production of delicious fatty liver. However, they are suitable for breeding for meat.

Large gray

It is considered the most common in our country. It was obtained by crossing representatives of the Romenian and Toulouse breed. Characteristic features of birds include (Figure 2):

  • Strong build,
  • High mobility
  • Fast fattening
  • The body is wide, the limbs are wide apart,
  • The color of the beak is dark red, there is a white tip on the end,
  • Thick middle neck and small head,
  • The plumage of birds is gray, and white on the belly,
  • On the stomach there are two folds of fat.
Figure 2. Large gray breed

The average weight of males reaches seven kilograms, but there are also larger individuals, the weight of which is nine kilograms. Egg production is quite high: up to 45 eggs per year, and the first clutch comes in age from 290 to 310 days. In females, the incubation instinct is strongly pronounced, and from one clutch, up to 60 percent of chicks hatch, whose weight at two to three months of age can reach 4 kilograms.

Chinese breed

Representatives of this species are considered the most egg-bearing. They are descended from wild birds that live in Northern China, Manchuria and Siberia.

A distinctive feature is the high egg production, which begins in November-December, when the bird reaches 270 days of age. Up to 75 percent of chicks hatch from brooding, although the instinct in females is poorly developed.

External characteristicsinclude (Figure 3):

  • White or brown plumage. Birds with brown feathers are characterized by a gray-brown strip from the nape to the back. In white birds, this band is gray,
  • At the base of the beak on the forehead there is a special growth, a lump (black in brown birds and orange in white). The size of the cone depends on the gender of the bird: in males it is much larger.
  • The body is medium and slightly raised,
  • The limbs are medium and also differ in color, in brown geese the legs are dark and in white they are orange.
Figure 3. White and brown Chinese species

Due to the high egg production, it is often used for breeding work with the aim of breeding more productive and viable animals.

This is a very common breed among farmers and owners of private farms in our country. Birds quickly gain weight in pastures. Exterior features include (Figure 4):

  • A big head with an orange-red bump on the forehead,
  • Long neck, under which is a wallet (special skin growth),
  • A lump and wallet do not appear immediately, but only after reaching 6-8 months of age,
  • The plumage is white and gray,
  • The body is large, and the body weight is large.
Figure 4. Appearance of Kholmogory geese

The weight of an adult male can reach 10 kg, and the female - 7.5. At the same time, egg production is up to 45 eggs, which begins at about 310 days of bird life. The geese have a well-developed brooding instinct, and the number of hatching chicks is half the size of the clutch.

Was withdrawn relatively recently. Its representatives belong to the soft type, although outwardly similar to the Kholmogory ones: the middle head, the long and wide body, slightly raised in the front, and the lump on the forehead. Coloring Gorky more diverse. They can be white, gray, gray, and piebald (Figure 5).

Figure 5. Gorky geese

Geese have a high egg production rate, up to 60 eggs per clutch, which begins at 200 days of age. However, females have a weak incubation instinct, although hatchability reaches eighty percent.

Birds are not very large: regardless of gender, the average weight reaches about four kilograms.

Geese Linda (Lindovskaya breed): description and photo

Representatives of the Lind breed can be called the best for breeding for meat. They are distinguished by high precocity and large build (weight reaches 7-8 kg).

Figure 6. Lindov Geese

They have a linda white feathers, a massive body and a large head with a characteristic bump (Figure 6). Despite the fact that birds are bred mainly for meat, they differ in a rather high egg production rate (on average, 50 eggs per year from one layer). In addition, the nestling instinct is well developed in the geese, and when incubating the young in the incubator, most of them survive due to good immunity. Meat has a high taste, but for productive breeding of birds, they need to provide constant access to water.

Toulouse breed of geese

The name comes from the French city of Toulouse, where these birds were first bred. They are large and heavy, and also prone to obesity, which significantly reduces their performance. Adults by weight can reach ten kilograms.

The appearance of the birds has the following features (Figure 7):

  • The feathers are gray, but the back of the birds is dark gray, and the ends of the wings are almost black,
  • The belly is round, large, white. There are fat folds under it,
  • The head is large, the neck is thick and of medium length,
  • Under the neck there is a characteristic wallet.
Figure 7. Toulouse Geese

Birds have a very calm character. The egg production of females is 45 eggs per laying (starts at 305 days of age), the incubation instinct is very well developed.

In addition to obtaining eggs, they are often bred to obtain a fatty, delicious liver. The author of the video will tell you how to properly breed and maintain Toulouse geese.
