General information

Botanical and varietal varieties of corn

Corn belongs to annual herbaceous plants, often tall with a stem up to 3 m. The main agricultural destination of cultivation of this crop is cobs and edible grains. The plant has a developed multi-tiered root system. The leaves are large, 10 cm wide, and often grow to 1 m in length. The culture loves heat, tolerates drought well, and grows poorly in the shade. Vegetation takes from 65 to 150 days. Corn blooms around the 60th day (depending on the variety), the stage of milky ripeness reaches 70-80 days.

The nutritional value is difficult to underestimate: the cobs contain vitamins of the B, C, E group, in addition to this, potassium, fluorine, phosphorus, calcium, iodine, boron, iron, that is, all the elements necessary for a healthy human body. Also there is a high content of fats and proteins, which are several times higher than the amount of these elements in other cereals. Caloric content of 100 g of corn kernels - 85.7 kcal.

It is possible to grow a crop, as using grain, from which seeds are obtained after processing, and previously growing seedlings.

Subspecies of ordinary corn

Types of corn shine with variety: siliceous, dent-like, bursting, starchy, waxy, sugar, membranous. Culture hybrids are numerous, combining the key characteristics of different species.

Dental corn has a large, slightly elongated and flat grain. The grain is covered with a solid shell on the sides, but at the same time the center and the upper part are powdery, friable. Of all the varieties, it is the dental one that is most often planted in home gardens. Seeds are used not only for planting next year, but also for creating cereals, alcohol, animal feed, flour. It is also grown for silage.

Rounded, smooth grain of siliceous corn. The shell of the grains is horny, and the powderiness is noted only in the center. This is the most common species in the world. Siliceous grain is grown for the production of cereals, flour, flakes, beloved corn sticks.

Starchy is most common in South and North America. Plants of this variety are usually medium tall, late ripened. Their grain is round, smooth, friable. Basically, this species is grown to create alcohol and starch.

Waxy corn is a modification of dental varieties and is characterized by a two-layer shell. It is the external similarity with a drop of wax that served as the name of the species; however, in terms of strength, this shell is close to a bursting variety. The inner part is powdery, contains a large amount of amylopectin, which is sticky.

One of the most popular species is bursting. It is made from it crunchy, fragrant popcorn. Grain is rice and pearl barley, has a high specific gravity, flouriness is observed only around the embryo.

Sweet corn has a high content of sugars, highly valued worldwide for the tenderness of the grains. Their shell is thin, contains a minimum amount of starch, which causes the grain to shrink when dried. By the way, beloved by all “Bonduelle” mainly consists of various varieties of sweet corn.

Finally, the rarest variety, in view of its uselessness, is filmy corn. It is characterized by an abundant growth of spikelet scales, which cover the grain with an armor. The farm does not use it.

Red corn (also known as “black corn” in some regions) is a variety of maize coming from the depths of Peru. Its grain, which is used in food and seeds, is colored maroon, almost black due to anthocyanins. Black maize cultivated in Peru has many beneficial properties due to the large amount of antioxidants. Often, black corn is included in the diet menu to improve the metabolism in the human body.

Sweet Corn Varieties

Sugar corn varieties are very diverse, have high yields and often a short growing season. Of these, as noted earlier, consists of products that many mistakenly consider the variety “Bonduelle”.

Corn Dobrynya has an incredibly sweet taste, as well as large cobs. Early ripening, helps to get juicy cobs first and either eat them on site or send them for processing. The bush grows up to 170 cm in height, unpretentious to the type of soil, has a high resistance to mosaic, rust and wilt.

Another variety that has a sweet grain structure is Lakomka 121. The variety is distinguished by high yield, increased immunity to most diseases, as well as a short growing season. Having reached the stage of milky ripeness, the cobs of this variety are very tasty both boiled and canned.

Early gold 401 refers to undersized varieties with an average duration of the growing season. Cobs grow up to 19 cm long, are used at the stage of milky ripeness. At the same time, the variety is generally resistant to most fungal and bacterial diseases.

Describing the varieties of corn, can not be overlooked Spirit F1. This variety is one of those that is convenient to grow through seedlings - so it gives a crop within 2 months after planting in open ground. Spirit grain is high in sugar, making it one of the sweetest varieties. Ears in length reach 20 cm.

But the numerous brands of canned corn “Bonduelle”, “Vernet”, “Eco” are actually used in the production of not a certain sort of corn, but a mixture of different varieties.

Favorite delicacy of cinema visitors - popcorn is made from grains of bursting corn. Low starch content, but at the same time high fat, protein content and strong, but thin shell make possible a small “explosion” of each grain when heated. The fact is that the shell does not crack immediately, but allows moisture to build up inside, fluffing the flesh outwards when critical pressure is reached.

Variety Volcano is one of the best, whose grain is suitable for making popcorn. The bush grows up to 2 m, and cobs up to 22 cm. Grains are yellow, rice. The grade shows high resistance to diseases and weather conditions.

Variety Burdoe-mid-front shovel with yellow grains and cobs up to 21 cm long grows up to 1.7 m, it is characterized by good resistance to diseases.

Zeya variety is the very red corn that Peru is so fond of. The bush grows up to 1.8 m, the cob is up to 20 cm. The early-ripening variety in dry weather looks like a species very close to the range of origin called black corn.

Care features

It does not matter how you planted the crop - through seeds or seedlings, the care for it is the same. After rain or watering, you need to loosen the ground so that the roots get enough oxygen. Be sure to remove weeds from the garden. These two points of care clearly show why the wild variety of corn does not grow large, sweet and is rarely good for food.

After a phase of 5-8 leaves, stepchildren will appear on the stem, which must be removed in order not to slow down the growing season of the plant. Be sure to thin out the seedlings in the first weeks of the life of the corn in the garden to grow only the strongest sprouts, which will give greater yield.

Also, corn hybrids respond well to organic and mineral fertilizers, so do not feel sorry for manure, potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen for the beds. And then you will grow corn, which to taste is not inferior to the product brand “Bonduelle”.

Botanical Corn Varieties

For a long history of existence, this grass was cultivated on different continents, in different climatic conditions, therefore today there are many high-yielding varieties. Depending on the cob structure, grain quality and composition, it is customary to divide this crop into several botanical species:

  1. Dental corn got its name for its external resemblance to the tooth. This is one of the most common varieties, often giving white and yellow grains, large and flat in shape.
  2. Sweetcorn is so called for its high sugar content in the grain. In some cases, it ranges from 20%. Grains have a white or bright yellow color. This type is the most popular in the food industry - it is widely used in canning.
  3. Siliceous is most often used for the production of corn flour and cereals, cornflakes and chopsticks. This is one of the most ancient species, characterized by resistance to pests and temperature extremes. Grain is rounded in shape, large, almost entirely composed of starch.
  4. Starchy - one of the oldest varieties of cereal culture. The starch content in the grains is about 80%. Basically, this type is used to make alcohol.
  5. The bursting type is used to produce popcorn and other popcorn varieties. Its grains contain little starch, but are rich in fats and proteins, and the thin shell of the grain allows it to burst even with a little heat.
  6. Waxy got its name for the similarity of the opaque outer part with wax. It has a smooth round grain of reddish color, almost 100% consisting of starch. Used in the alcohol industry.
  7. The membranous appearance is of no value to industry, since not only the cob, but also the grains themselves are covered with a multilayer shell.
  8. Semi-tooth is a hybrid variety obtained by crossing the siliceous and toothlike types.

This classification was developed at the turn of the XIX - XX centuries. Engaged in the study of maize F. Kernicke, Stervant and N. Kuleshov.

Varieties of cereal in color and size

In addition to the well-known classification, there are other varieties of this cereal, differing not only in the shape and quality of the grains, but also in color and cob size. In accordance with this parameter are highlighted:

Red corn is so named because of the characteristic color of the cob. Color gives it a record number of anthocyanin - a powerful antioxidant, which prevents the development of tumors, diseases of the cardiovascular system.

It reduces high pressure, cleans blood vessels. The grass is widespread mainly in South America, in Peru and Mexico, where it has been cultivated for many centuries,

Blue corn got its name because of the blue color, in which mature ears are painted. Sometimes it is called lilac or purple maize because of the transitional color of the paint. Blue corn contains a huge amount of anthocyanins, which makes it antioxidant and antitumor properties.

Blue corn is widespread mainly in North America, where blue chips and popcorn are made of it, which are very popular among Americans. In addition, blue corn is widely used in Mexico for the production of local fermented alcoholic beverage,

Black corn, like other colored maize, is grown in Peru, South America. In black, it is due to the same anthocyanin, which is contained in the red and blue varieties. Black corn is rich in minerals and vitamins, as well as proteins and essential amino acids. Healing properties are not only grains, but also the stigma.

They are brewed and used as a tea for many ailments. Black corn is widely used in the alcohol industry - to obtain the Peruvian alcoholic drink chicha morada.

Peruvian Indians initially black corn matures with small (no more than 4 cm) cobs, but for many centuries of selection they were able to change not only the taste of maize, but also make the plant high (about 2 meters) with strong large cobs (up to 30 cm). Black corn tastes no different from the usual for European, sugar,

Color corn is a very beautiful hybrid, decorative corn, bred by American farmer Carl Barnes. He crossed, by open pollination, multi-colored species of maize and in the end received unusual specimens in color.

Their uniqueness lies in the fact that in one cob there are multi-colored grains. Colored corn is suitable for making popcorn and decorations. It is not eaten boiled because it is 80% starch. This is corn, the seeds of which are more expensive than other color types,

Mini corn is a dwarf variety of ordinary cereal. Mini corn reaches a length of not more than 10 cm, then it is collected and sent for processing. It is appreciated by miniature grains and milky flavor. Mini corn is grown mainly in Thailand. Its composition is rich in vitamins of group B, as well as A, D, K, E.

Mini-corn is widely used in cooking in Eastern countries. It is used in the preparation of various dishes, most often dietary. Its use contributes to the purification of the body from toxins toxins, so mini corn has long become an indispensable product in the diet.

Corn seeds of different colors are not cheap. Usually they are difficult to find in a wide sale, but on the Internet on many sites you can find ads for selling seeds.

All listed types of corn have varieties cultivated for different purposes. In total there are about three hundred.

Varietal varieties of cereal

The best varieties of corn should be resistant to the vagaries of climate, temperature change, soil characteristics and other adverse factors.

One of the main categories of maize classification for varieties is the time of ripening. Early, mid-season and late-ripening maize varieties are distinguished. Mostly they are all hybrids of corn, i.e. those that artificially bred to improve the quality of the grass.

Early-ripe hybrids include the following popular maize varieties:

"Dobrynya f1" is distinguished by high yield, large-fruited - cobs reach 22-25 cm in length. The time from planting to harvesting is about 70 days. Seeds are produced in the USA, but it can also be grown in other regions. The main agrotechnical requirement is loamy, well-fertilized soils on the sunny side. If these rules are followed, then the corn “Dobrynya” will delight the vegetable grower with excellent taste.

Corn "Trophy" refers to the early ripe hybrids with excellent taste. The main use of the crop is home canning.

In the description of this Dutch variety, it is noted that it belongs to supersweet maize, the ripening period of which does not exceed 70 days. The plant is afraid of frosts, and planted in the soil to a depth of 5 cm only when the soil warms up to +12. If the growing conditions are observed, the cob reaches a length of 20-22 cm, and the weight varies from 200-220 g.

Mid-season varieties include:

Corn variety "Don tall". It has a high yield, and, unlike hybrid varieties, it has a long flowering and is frost-resistant. The plant is tall - up to 3 m, has thick broad leaves. The cobs are cone-shaped and reach a length of 25-30 cm. Corn of this variety is universal in its application: it is used to produce grain, and the stem and leaves are used for silage. The ripening period is 100-120 days.

"Don tall" refers to the dent type of maize and is grown mainly in the Central Black Earth and North Caucasus region.

  • Corn "Pioneer" is not a variety, but a company that produces high-yielding hybrids. They are perfectly mature in different climatic zones, resistant to diseases and pests, cold-resistant. Vegetation, depending on the variety, lasts about 85-100 days. Bushes have an average height. With proper irrigation brings a good harvest.
  • Corn "Megaton f1" refers to supersweet hybrids. This is a very productive variety, giving cobs up to 25 cm long and 5 cm in diameter. Grain, as a rule, large, located in 18-20 rows. The variety is well kept and preserves its taste for a long time.
  • Late popular varieties include:

"Athlete 9906770" reaches maturity in 90-95 days. The hybrid is created for cultivation on garden and small-scale farms. This is a tall plant with an ear up to 20 cm long with 16-18 rows of grains. It has excellent taste and is designed for canning.

"Polaris" refers to late hybrids of the sugar species. A feature of this variety of corn is a long growing season - 100 days.

The bush is a tall plant with one stepsons with large ears - up to 25 cm. It is intended for canning, freezing and eating raw due to its taste.

There are other varieties of corn, which, subject to the agronomic rules, are capable of bringing greater yields.

Fans of this cereal should remember that it loves the sunny side, well-fertilized soil and watering.

    Sweet corn

Латинское название — Zea mays saccharata.

The main feature of the form, as the name suggests, is a very high sugar content. Depending on the variety and degree of ripeness, its amount varies between 6-12%.

In general, this type of crop grows almost in the whole world, where climatic conditions make it possible to grow this heat-loving plant, but the top ten countries with the highest rates in this area include:

    1. USA.
    2. People's Republic of China.
    3. Brazil.
    4. Argentina.
    5. Ukraine.
    6. India.
    7. Mexico.
    8. Indonesia.
    9. South Africa.
    10. Romania.
There are three main uses for sweet corn:

    • eating and cooking various fresh dishes,
    • preparation in the form of preservation or a freezing,
    • processing into flour.

On the variety of varieties of sugar maize, you can write books, in particular, among those varieties that are successfully grown in the middle lane, it would be worth mentioning:

    • early hybrids (ripening period - 65-75 days) - “Dobrynya”, “Voronezh 80-A”, “Early Gold 401”, “Sundance” (“sun dance”) and “Super Sundance” (F1), “Spirit” (F1 ), Creamy Nectar (F1), Treacle (F1), Trophy (F1), Sheba (F1), Legend (F1), Bloody Butcher, Honey-Ice Nectar,
    • middle hybrids (ripening period - 75-90 days) - “Divine Paper 1822”, “Merkur” (F1), “Bonus” (F1), “Megaton” (F1), “Challenger” (F1), “Krasnodar”, “Krasnodar sugar 250, Don tall, Pioneer, Boston (F1), or Syngenta,
    • late hybrids (ripening period - 85-95 days) - “Ice nectar”, “Triple sweetness”, “Gourmand 121”, “Kuban sugar”, “Athlete 9906770”, “Polaris”.

The Latin name is Waxy Maize or Zеa mays ceratina.

The color and shape of the grain may be different, yellow, white, red, but if in other varieties of maize with white grains, according to the standard, no more than two percent of other colors are allowed, then the waxy variety is less stringent: the threshold is increased to 3%.

The sign of waxy is recessive, in connection with which such corn can not only be planted next to other varieties, but also to prevent the mixing of grains during harvesting and storage. Initially, this species was formed as a result of a random mutation, when, due to a change in some external conditions, a recessive wx gene appeared in the plant. For the first time such a mutation was recorded in China, but with climate change, it is increasingly occurring in other regions. In 1908, grains of this species were sent from China to the United States by J. Farnham, a volunteer of the Reformed Church, but did not receive wide distribution: unfortunately, like all natural mutations, waxy maize shows much lower viability compared to other maize species, more often dies and gives smaller yields.

The main feature of waxy corn is a double layer of tissue surrounding the embryo (endosperm), which makes the grain appear transparent, as if covered with a layer of wax. Inside, this fabric has a powdery structure, which gives the starch of such corn completely unique properties.

Due to problems with breeding, waxy corn is not grown on such a large scale as, for example, dentary. The main area of its industrial production is the People’s Republic of China.

The main purpose of waxy maize is starch production, the composition and qualities of which are the main advantage of this species. Thus, in all types of maize starch consists of amylopectin and amylose in a ratio of about 7: 3, while in Waxy Maize amylopectin is almost 100%. Due to this, this variety gives the most sticky flour.

The number of varieties of Waxy Maize is quite limited, and the differences between them are not too large. So, among the most popular varieties of this species is called Strawberry, Oakhakanskaya red and Pearl. All of them belong to mid-season varieties, however, Strawberry matures a little earlier than Oakhanskaya and Nacre. Comparative characteristics of the varieties are given in the table.

    Popcorn popcorn

This type of corn belongs to the most ancient. The grains are small in size, although there are different subspecies:

    • rice - the tip resembles a beak,
    • barley - has a rounded shape, like pearl barley,
    • pearl - the seeds are very small.

The weevil contains an increased amount of protein (16%), fat (20%) and protein, therefore it is used in the production of cereals, flakes and other products. It also has a thin, but strong shell that does not crack, but allows moisture to accumulate inside, with the result that the flesh is "bursting" and upon the onset of critical pressure it explodes from the inside. Thus, the grain is bursting, so this corn is used to make popcorn.

When the grains are heated, the vapors begin to press into spherocrystals of starch, which leads to a breakthrough of the pericarp and peel. At the same time, the upper vitreous layer is turned inside out with a fluffy white mass, due to which an increase in the grain occurs and popcorn is obtained.

Popcorn corn looks beautiful, as it has many branches with numerous cob formation and dense foliage. Grains are obtained in different colors: white, red, striped, blue.

    • Miracle Pine Red. Homeland is considered to be China. The plant is low (up to 1 m), but it is highly bushy and can form up to 10 cobs. Their length is 10-13 cm, they are shaped like cones. The grains are colored dark red and are suitable for obtaining snowy air flakes.
    • Miracle bump yellow. It grows no more than 1 m, has a cob about 11 cm, in shape resembles a cone. The small kernels are slightly elongated, almost like long rice, but they have small whitish specks.
    • Red Arrow. The variety also comes from China. It has a height of up to 1.4 m. The plant branches well, and on one branch there can be up to 6 cobs. They are rather long - they grow up to 14 cm. Seeds of small sizes and rounded shape are obtained very beautiful, as they are colored in burgundy, almost black.
    • Mini Striped. Quite a tall plant - it can reach 1.8 m. Branching, you can get up to 3-4 cobs. They have a length of 11-12 cm, in shape resemble a cylinder. The kernels are small, kidney-shaped, white-red-striped.
    • Bang-bang. The plant height reaches 1.3-1.7 m, gives a cob cylindrical shape, which weigh about 200-250 g. The grains are yellow, rather wide and elongated.
    • Zeya. It resembles the previous variety, but differs in grain. They are colored burgundy or dark red, wide, rounded on one side, and pointed on the other.
    • Vnuchkina joy. He loves moisture, does not tolerate drought and brings a bountiful harvest only on well-fertilized soil. The plant grows up to 1.5 m, gives the cob up to 12 cm long. The kernels have a light orange color and in form resemble “Zey”.
    • Hotel. The plant is characterized by high drought resistance and resistance to lodging. Not afraid of high temperatures, so it can be grown even in the most arid and hot areas. The plant grows up to 2 m, gives a cob about 20 cm long. Grains have green color and the pearl-barley form.

These varieties are early maturing and ripen in about 80 days.

  • Ping pong. Medium early variety with a maturity of 100-120 days. Gives short cobs up to 15 cm. The grains are small and have a yellow color.
  • Volcano (volcano bursting). The variety is medium-sized, loves warmth and is resistant to many diseases. Shoots grow up to 2 m. Cobs can be from 15 to 22 cm and give up to 100-120 g of yellow grain of an oval rice form.
  • Grade "Dobrynya"

The growing season takes about 70 days, so the hybrid is considered early. That corn has a very rich sweet taste, and its ears grow to a length of 25 cm.

Plants in height reach 170 cm. An ear is laid at the level of 70 cm. 1.5 full-fledged forks are formed on one corn stalk. The cobs themselves are very beautiful, full, with a diameter of up to 5.5 cm, 16-18 grains are formed in the same row. Plants are very well adapted to the climatic conditions of the area, can grow on any kind of soil, are immune to rust, mosaic, smut and wilt.

The main advantage of this hybrid is the taste of grains. Hybrid "Dobrynya" is ideal for processing and selling fresh. The collection of cobs is carried out when the grains have entered the stage of milky ripeness, or when the color of the skin has turned slightly yellow, and the grains themselves dry up a little.

    Variety "Lakomka"

The variety is high-yielding, and ripens very quickly - in 70-75 days. The taste of the grains of this corn is very sweet, so the product is used in fresh and canned form. The bushes of this variety of corn are medium-sized, namely, they reach a height of 140-150 cm. The ears of this corn are cylindrical in shape, they reach 18-20 cm in length, and weigh 170- 230 g in weight.

The grains are arranged in long, wide rows, the peel of the grains is yellow. Collect the cobs need in the phase of milky ripeness.
