General information

Ranunkulyus - what is behind the unusual name?

The first association that occurs at the mention of buttercups is the sunshine and freshness of greenery, which give a special spring mood. That is why this culture is popular among florists. And florists often use ranunculus in a pot to decorate living spaces and ceremonial halls.

How ranunculus looks and breeds

Ranunculus is a perennial herb of the ranunculus family. His homeland is Asia Minor. The flower has a few more simple names: Asian buttercup, adonis, fierce color.

The cultivation of buttercups has been known since the 16th century. This culture was spread almost all over the world. It was cultivated in Asia, in Europe and northeast Africa. Therefore, a ranunculus has many additional definitions.

This flower was also known in antiquity, which is confirmed by numerous references to the buttercup in myths and legends. Recently, the popularity of buttercups has increased. They are increasingly used not only as a decorative ornament, but also in the preparation of floral bouquets and compositions.

Translated from the Latin, ranunculus means "frog". This name is a flower because in natural conditions it grows near a pond or directly in them.

In nature, there are more than 500 species, but at home only low-growing hybrids are grown. They have large flowers and a wide leaf plate. Flowering lush and durable. Rosettes on the bush continuously bloom for 1-2 months. Usually in June and July.

The reproduction of ranunculus decorative varieties is carried out in two ways:

To germinate seeds, you must first soak them in water for 2 hours. Then they are planted in the prepared ground substrate at a depth of 3-4 cm. A greenhouse effect is created using glass or oilcloth in a flowerpot. Periodically the soil is moistened with a spray bottle. After the sprouts appear, the pot opens. Transplantation and diving of seedlings is carried out after the appearance of 5-6 leaflets. This method is long and laborious and often does not bring the expected result.

More effectively the ranunculus breeds with bulbs. The plant annually gives a gain of 5-7 young sprouts. They are separated and transplanted into a separate container. The plant takes root well and blooms quickly. But it is often observed grinding color rosettes.

Experienced growers recommend purchasing a new planting material in nurseries annually. Such plants develop much better, their flowering comes earlier.

Owners of ranunculus, regardless of its type, must take into account the fact that the plant sap is poisonous. Therefore, in the care of him is to wear protective gloves, and put the pot in a place inaccessible to children and pets.

How to grow ranunculus in a flower bed

In open ground tubers are planted in mid-April. Topsoil should warm up by 5-8 degrees. Before planting the bulbs, preliminary preparation is carried out not only for the soil, but also for planting material.

Beautiful Ranunculus Plant

The soil in the landing hole should be light and loose. For this, it is mixed with river sand and peat. It is possible to enrich the soil with nutrients with the help of rotted manure. You can not add to the hole fresh organic matter, as this will lead to the death of the tuber.

10-12 hours before planting, the bulbs are recommended to be placed in clean water. 1-2 hours before disembarking, a root formation stimulator is added to the vessel.

How to plant a ranunculus in open ground:

  • In the prepared place a hole is dug 25-30 cm deep, 15-20 cm in diameter
  • A drainage layer is poured at the bottom, its height is 7-10 cm.
  • The recess will be filled with a soil mixture of about 10 cm.
  • The tuber is placed in the filled hole, with sharp tips down
  • The depth of planting bulbs - 7 cm
  • After that, the hole is filled with the rest of the soil to the brim, while it is carefully compacted around the tuber.
  • It is watered with clean water at room temperature.
  • The hole is mulched using wood chips or clean earth.
  • If several bushes are planted at the same time, a distance of 12-15 cm is maintained between them.

For greater decorative appeal, florists recommend planting buttercups in small groups. This may be a single bush or trench planting. In order to give brightness and contrast, flower growers often plant several plant species with a different size and shade of a flower in one flowerbed.

Get a bright living carpet with juicy greens allows not only high-quality planting material and the correct fit, but also the proper care of ranunculus. After planting the tubers in the open soil, the flower should be regularly:

  • Water
  • Feed
  • Treat with means from harmful insects and diseases

Rununkulus does not like transplants. Therefore, when forming a flower bed, you should find a slightly shaded place for it from the south side. If you plan to constantly change the place of formation of the flower bed, it is better to grow a flower in a pot and, if necessary, just rearrange it. Buttercups in a flowerpot grow well and bloom indoors. Therefore, this method of cultivation also allows you to decorate your home or workplace with bright colors.

Growing ranunculus in a pot: planting and care

A flower in a flowerpot can be used as an interior decoration, or it can be decorated with balconies and loggias. In such conditions, a ranunculus develops no worse than when it is grown on open ground.

At home, planted varieties with short stems and multiple large leaves. Cultivation of the hanging species is also possible. Regardless of the option chosen for landing, you must:

  • Buy bulbs
  • Buy a suitable pot
  • Prepare soil mix and drainage

Multicolored blooming bright ranunculus

Buy quality planting material is possible only in specialized stores. At such points of sale, the bulbs are stored in appropriate conditions. This allows you to maintain their germination. Do not buy bulbs at fairs or in the market. It is important when buying carefully inspect them. Tubers must be dense, their surface without mechanical damage and traces of damage by pests. It is also unacceptable the presence of mold, dried or rotted areas.

At home, growers recommend planting a plant in a group, rather than one at a time. Therefore, when choosing a pot, you should give preference to wide oblong pots or decorative drawers. The material of their manufacture is selected depending on the purpose of cultivation. For decorating the room suitable pot of ceramic or glass with a wide drain hole. Its diameter is not less than 15-20 cm. If it is necessary to grow an onion before planting in open ground, the use of plastic containers is acceptable.

The soil for the flower should be loose. Ready mixes based on peat. As a drainage, you can use broken shards of ceramic vases. Expanded clay or egg shells.

Planting ranunculus in the pot is carried out in the following way:

  • A day before planting, tubers are soaked in clean water.
  • Drainage is poured on the bottom of the prepared pot, a layer of 3-4 cm
  • Then ¾ pot is filled with soil
  • The bulbs are placed in the pot with the sharp side up.
  • Then the land is filled and irrigated.
  • The tops of the tubers should peek slightly out of the ground.

Growing a flower on the windowsill

Next, the pot is placed on the windowsill on the south side. Care for ranunculus at home is reduced to maintaining the average soil moisture and observing the temperature regime within 18 degrees.

Within a few weeks, the tubers should germinate. When the shoots rise a few centimeters, the temperature in the room must be increased to 22 degrees. During the growing season, the flower is regularly fed with special fertilizers. Watering is carried out three times a week, the soil should be constantly slightly wet. Watering is reduced after the plant wilts.

The rest period of ranunculus grown in a pot lasts from 1-1.5 months. Preparation for it is to transplant the tubers into a fresh land substrate. Then the pot is placed in a shaded place with a temperature of 15-18 degrees.

Timeliness and proper care significantly affects the development and visual appeal of the flower. Therefore, compliance with the recommendations of florists is mandatory.

While watching the video you will learn about the cultivation of ranunculus.

Modest buttercup with an exotic appearance

The family of buttercups has more than 600 species, its representatives are found on all continents except Antarctica. For lovers of rock gardens and rockeries, high alpine buttercup is of interest, but garden or Asian buttercup ranunculus has the greatest decorative value. According to the place of natural habitat in Asia Minor and in the south-east of Europe, it is also called Syrian.

This is a perennial herbaceous plant growing in one stem up to half a meter. Unlike other species, ornamental ranunculus reproduces by tuberous roots, similar to small crabs or spiders. The leaves are emerald green, tripartite, pubescent, juicy, which makes the plant brittle. Each tuber expels up to 4 flower stalks, forming from 1 to 10 flowers with a diameter of 4-7 cm, collected in beautiful lush bouquets. The palette amazes with a variety and a saturation of shades - red, yellow, white, crimson, orange, lilac.

Ranunculus is a perennial, like most tuber-like cultures - an ephemeroid. Its life cycle can be divided into several periods:

  • vegetation, including flowering (spring summer),
  • dying off of the aerial part - ripening of the tuber (beginning of autumn),
  • rest period - bookmark flower buds for the next year,
  • renewal of the growing season.

Garden forms of decorative culture were known in the XVI century. Modern breeding is aimed at obtaining large flowers, expanding the color range, increasing the duration of flowering, breeding curb varieties.

Old and modern varieties

Ranunculus breeding has several centuries, hundreds of varieties with a variety of color, shape of petals, degree of terry. In Europe, it is very popular as a container culture and is everywhere decorated with windows, balconies, open verandas, gazebos. In our gardens, this plant is rare, as can be seen even from the name of the varieties sold. Basically, the name (garden buttercup or ranunculus) and color designation (yellow, pink).

Let's try to understand the assortment in more detail. All garden flower forms can be combined into 4 groups.

  • The Persian variety is the oldest, it includes tall varieties intended for cutting. Flowers are large, double or semi-double, bloom in spring.
  • Turkish or Talmaid buttercups are different petals, twisted inside the flower, they are also called peony.
  • French ranunculus less terry compared to other forms, color from white to lilac, blooms in summer.
  • The Asian group is the most extensive and by the efforts of breeders continues to grow. The peculiarity of the varieties and hybrids of the Asian species is stunted bushy plants, fairly resistant to heat and blooming during the summer.

We give examples of the most popular varieties and hybrids of culture, which are quite productively vegetating in our climatic conditions.

  • Bloomingdale, our tubers are sold as Blooming Valley - an extensive group of hybrid ranunculuses that come in one color (white, red, yellow, pink, orange) or as a mix of colors.
  • Color Karnival - a beautiful variety on high stems up to 70 cm is perfect for cutting. Flowers of warm shades create a bright sunny island in the garden, over which butterflies and insects constantly circle.
  • Superbissimy is a tall variety, mostly with white and red semi-double heads of flowers.

Tip! It is noticed that ranuncules lose their ornamental qualities after a few years when they are propagated by tubers. This applies to modern hybrids, which are best purchased annually, and you can independently grow old proven varieties.

Ranunculus in garden design and not only

Tightly-filled ranunculus flowers can become a highlight of the garden. Landscape designers offer a wide variety of uses for this amazing plant.

  • The buttercup in the mixborder mixes well with anemones, scabiosa, its bright beauty is set off by arabis, alissum. Tall varieties are planted in the center or in the background, decorating the edge of the flower garden with miniature violets, daisies, shaved.
  • Ranuncules of different colors, planted in groups or in an array, form an amazingly beautiful sea of flowers during the flowering period.
  • They are also good in container plantings. For cultivation in floor vases, pots, tubs, balcony boxes use a mix of low-growing varieties.

Exquisite garden buttercup flowers love florists. Bouquets resembling roses are sold all winter — from November to April; in the summer, pruning can be obtained from your own flower bed. Buds of delicate pastel shades are ideal for a wedding bouquet.

Buttercup in room culture

Ranunculus tubers have a very short dormant period (1 month), so the plant is widely used for winter forcing and growing in pots.

Young nodules, dug in August, ready to germinate in October. With proper room farming, it takes 2.5–3 months from germination to flowering - so consider when to plant them to get flowers, for example, by March 8.

The Asian buttercup is a light-loving culture of a long day. So that the seedlings do not stretch out excessively and bloom, the pot with the forcing is kept on the south window and additional lighting is organized on the basis that the total light period should be at least 15 hours a day.

Drainage is placed at the bottom of the flowerpot, and the container is filled with a light peat-based substrate enriched with humus. Before planting, the tubers are treated with the drug Maxim - for several hours they are wrapped in a cloth with a solution of fungicide moistened. It etches the planting material from fungal infections, stimulates germination, enriches with microelements.

Ranunculus have another cultivation secret. From planting to the emergence of sprouts, the optimum temperature should be 10–12 ° C, during forcing - 15–20 ° C. It is necessary to ensure that the soil does not dry out, but tuber plants do not like excessive moisture.

Tip! To balance moisture, add sphagnum moss or hydrogel pellets soaked in water to planting soil. These are granules from a special polymer, first they swell, and then gradually give moisture to the roots.

Features of cultivation in the open ground

Along with room culture, ranunculuses, like anemones or tuberous begonias, are suitable for planting in open ground. You can do this in different ways - plant the nodules right on the garden bed, grow it in a room, sow flowers with seeds.

Whatever option you choose, remember that the plant is quite capricious and loves moderation in everything. In the spring it is afraid of cold winds, night frosts, excessive dampness, in summer - excessive heat. The place for a flower is sunny, in hot regions it is shaded at midday hours, moist, but with good drainage, protected by walls of the house or trees from drafts.

Planting nodules

The easiest way to grow ranunculus - planting tubers immediately to a permanent place - in a flower garden or outdoor container. A suitable time for this is the middle of May. You can plant earlier, but then you have to provide for the option of sheltering shoots from return frost.

Before planting, the soil is loosened, humus is applied, complex mineral fertilizers for flowers of prolonged action (Agricola, Royal Mix). If the structure of the soil is not sufficiently light and crumbly, it is recommended to add peat or vermiculite.

Tubers are soaked to swell in ordinary water or solution preparations. For disinfection use potassium permanganate, Fitosporin, Maxim, to stimulate growth - Appin, Zircon. Roots do not need to fill, just moisten a napkin and wrap it. The second method is swelling in a wet substrate. Crabs put horns on wet peat, sawdust, garden soil and wait for them to feed and finish.

Planted planting material is planted to a depth of 2–5 cm, with the horns down, keeping a distance of 10–12 cm between them.

To get early flowering of ranunculus, gardeners practice planting in the room first, and then moving and caring for seedlings in the open field.

In this case, the landing time is shifted to February - March. Требования к грунту, световому и температурному режиму такие же, как и в комнатной культуре. Саженцы плохо переносят пересадку, поэтому в качестве временной тары специалисты рекомендуют использовать торфяные горшочки.

Important! Количество цветков на цветоносе напрямую зависит от количества света на стадии выращивания рассады. Если растение не досвечивать, оно вытянется и вместо букета из 7–10 головок, получите 1–3 жалких цветочка.

Growing conditions

The ranunculus flower gives preference to not too abundant watering, because with excessive dampness the root can grow moldy plants or rot. For the same reason, at the time of thaw, it must be protected from water.

Buttercup ranunculuses are not particularly demanding to the soil, but they feel better themselves in a sunny open place, in warm, moist soil that is rich in humus and free from weeds. Buttercup soil needs a soft, loose, having a neutral reaction.

The best temperature for germinating bulbs is approximately +16 ° C, and during growth the best conditions will be +14 ° C. With a warmer content, the plant will quickly fall off during the flowering period.

In winter, the temperature in the room where ranunculus is grown should not be below +6 ° C. The only exception is the period of rest, which lasts a month. Ranunkulyus, planting and caring for which are carried out in time and correctly, is able to give strong and healthy basic and additional tubers.

The bulbs of this flower are not designed for long storage even with low-temperature content, they quickly peck. Therefore, they must be planted in pots before spring.

Use of buttercups

Ranunkulyus, planting and care of which is described below, is famous for having an original appearance and blooming with colorful, luxurious flowers. On one branch you can see several flowers at the same time. Flowering lasts about a month, usually it is June-July. But in the garden shops after distillation, this flowering plant can be purchased in the winter. If it bloomed in early spring after the forcing, then it is kept in pots and used to decorate the home, placed on the balcony.

Due to its decorative properties, colorful buttercups look great in various group plantings. Ranunculus is also used to decorate parks, gardens and squares.

Especially great these flowers adorn wedding bouquets or compositions of several types of flowering plants that accompany various ceremonial meetings.

Ranunculus are also planted in urban gardens, in flowerbeds, in rockeries, mixborders, and hanging flowerpots.

Preparation of beds

A plot of land for landing a Ranunculus, as well as for any bulbous-tuberous crops, is being prepared in the fall. The last valid period is about a month before landing. This is due to the fact that the ground should settle down properly.

The seat should be slightly shaded and open. Areas with close bedding of soil water, or so-called saucer with accumulated moisture, are unsuitable for planting.

In order to grow ranunculus at home on the beds, it is necessary to deposit and dig to the ground at a depth of 40 cm per square meter:

  • a couple buckets of compost or humus,
  • up to one hundred grams of simple superphosphate,
  • 250 g of lime.

Fresh manure is allowed to make no earlier than a year before the landing of the buttercup. Also, if the soil is clay, then you need to add sand and peat, and if sand is clay.

Ranunculus: how to plant

Before planting, it is necessary to introduce peat chips into the ground to ensure a weakly acidic soil reaction. Also at the bottom of the landing groove you need to add 40 g of potassium magnesia and 15 g of ammonium nitrate per 1 square meter. m, well mixed with the ground.

For more early flowering bulbs planted in containers in early March, and in the middle of May they need to be transplanted into open soil, trying not to ruin the earthen room.

Landing the ranunculus in the open ground is made only when the soil warms up. Such a favorable period begins in early May. Before planting, the tubers must be soaked in water, in which growth stimulators have been previously added to accelerate swelling and potassium permanganate for disinfection.

Planting flowers should be planted with a density of 15-20 pieces per square meter with legs downwards, the depth of planting material should not exceed 4 cm for heavy earth and 7 cm for light, and the distance between flowers should be 15 cm.

The first sprouts will appear in two weeks, and after about a couple of months each tuber of the plant will throw out several flower stalks - they should be left to get seeds. And the following flowering buds are removed in order to prolong the flowering period.

Buttercup reproduction tubers

With the onset of autumn, the foliage falls off and the handsome ranunculus falls away, the tubers of which must be immediately dug out in order to avoid re-germination and put into storage. This should be done because this plant is not frost resistant, and when cold weather sets in and temperatures fall below -7 ° C dies.

In the majority of buttercups, the root division process takes place: daughter nodules grow on the mother bulb, additional rhizomes, which are carefully separated and used for further plantings. Separation should be carried out carefully so as not to damage the thin roots.

Adult tubers for the season form from five to seven children. Ranunculus, whose bulbs, after separation, must be treated with a fungicide, should be left alone until spring.

Every three to four years, the rhizomes of the ranunculus are replaced with new roots, which are purchased in flower shops. They are updated because over time the bulbs infect viruses, and the plant loses its decorative effect.

Seed propagation

In the fall, buttercup plants produce seeds on the peduncles. Like other tuberous species, they can also reproduce ranunculus. How to plant these flowers with seeds? Go

Selected healthy and valuable seeds are sown at the end of February in containers filled with light sandy fertile soil, which is steamed beforehand. Crops slightly overwhelm the earth, moistened with a spray and covered with glass. It is necessary to protect crops from condensate - every day for this, wipe the glass and ventilate the box.

Shoots appear after a couple of weeks. Then, when they are strengthened, the glass is removed, and the container is placed in a cool, not very dark place.

To form a ranunculus, planting and care must be properly organized. Plants require constant illumination of crops: lamps with a capacity of 40 to 200 W / 1 sq. M. m is placed at a height of 60-80 cm. Duration of coverage: from 10 to 14 hours per day. Lamps are turned off and on at the same time. When the fourth true leaf appears, the shoots swoop.

With the onset of early May, seedlings are transplanted into a garden greenhouse and covered with cloth. Then, when the threat of frost passes, matter is removed.

Storage of planting material

The nodules left in the ground cannot stand the cold and perish, so they must be dug out. This must be done before the shoots and leaves are completely dry. If you skip this period, the nodules will easily get lost in the soil, and it will be impossible to find them. The dug onions are dried, the stems are cut from them, the children are separated and freed from the ground with a soft brush.

Before laying the winter nodules, they must be placed in a rather weak solution of potassium permanganate for 20 minutes, dried again and folded in a paper bag. You can keep them in the vegetable box of the refrigerator or in the basement, maintaining moderate humidity, to keep ranunculus. Growing flowers depends on the storage conditions of the roots.

During the winter, it is necessary to control onions for the occurrence of fungal diseases. If an unhealthy plant is found, the place of the disease must be treated with colloidal sulfur or brilliant green. A deeply affected plant is immediately removed, as the disease can go to the rest of the roots.

After wintering, the buttercup tubers are sorted out: dried up, rotted and limped are thrown away, the rest are prepared for planting in the ground.

Buttercup Care

Ranunculus, planting and caring for which do not belong to labor-intensive operations, nevertheless requires the implementation of some actions:

  1. When the first shoots appear, the beds must be loosened after precipitation and watering and weeds must be removed.
  2. During the appearance of the first flowers, plants are fed with a solution of mullein, and when mass flowering begins - with potash-phosphorus fertilizers.
  3. If shoots are threatened by frost, they are covered with any non-woven material.
  4. To ensure good drainage, egg shells can be laid at the bottom of a groove or flower pot.
  5. When the ranunculus flowers only grow, they require abundant watering.
  6. During flowering plants add a little potash mineral or organic fertilizer to the irrigation water.
  7. When the flowers begin to wither, the frequency of watering is reduced.
  8. Beginning to wither flowers are removed from the stems, and at the end of summer the stems are cut to the ground.

Cultivation and Distillation

Excellent for forcing special varieties for pots or stunted ranunculus. Cultivation for this purpose begins with determining when to get flowers. The bulbs are planted from August to November, and the plant will bloom three months after planting.

The problem for forcing buttercups in the house is the high temperature in the rooms: because of it, the flowers lose their attractiveness, as they are drawn out. Planting of tubers should be done at a temperature not higher than +10 ° C, and further content - at +20 ° C (not higher). These conditions are well maintained in greenhouses.

In order to grow ranunculus at home, you need the following:

  • soil mixture consists of flower soil and sand, which provides water permeability, at least once every three years, buttercups must be transplanted,
  • with excessive growth rhizome is released from the children who are seated in other pots,
  • planting is done in a tank with a diameter of about 20 cm: up to three seedlings are placed in spacious pots, and when planted in small ones, one.

Ranunculus varieties

For many years, the work carried out by breeders has been crowned with success: numerous ranuncules, which can be grown in open ground and in pots, have more than six hundred different varieties and varieties. Even varieties have been developed that can remain fresh in the bouquet for almost two weeks.

All buttercups are divided into the following groups:

  1. Peony - have large double flowers of yellow, red, white, violet and pink color (Ranunculus Blomingdale Rose Bicolor, Ranunculus Purple Picotee).
  2. French - plants with semi-double flowers (Ranunculus Mache F1 bicolor Mix and others).
  3. Persian - have semi-double or simple flowers with a short stem (Ranunculus Rebecca mix and others).
  4. African - are distinguished by large globose globular flowers (Ranunculus Double Pink Buttercup, Ranunculus Bloomingdale F1 mix Bicolor, Ranunculus Bloomingdale F1 mix).

In addition to differences in the form of a flower, buttercups also differ in stem height: varieties with a stem up to 25 cm in height are considered to be undersized, and tall ones with a stem up to 40 cm in height.

Types of garden ranunculus

Everything types of buttercups conditionally can be divided into two main groups:

  • stalky or African, flowers whose shape resembles a peony,
  • Persian, which is shaped like a rose bud.

The remaining varieties are varieties of these two. Mostly sold peony buttercups with large terry flowers. It can be red, yellow, pink, white buttercups. Persian have a simpler flower shape and are characterized by small growth.

Did you know?Ranunkulyus is also called the “Asian buttercup” because it came to us from Asia Minor. In the XVI century from Turkey, he came to England, where he immediately aroused great interest. At the end of the 19th century, its popularity was noticeably diminished, but nowadays the plant relives a wave of interest from gardeners. Spherical flowers 8–10 cm in diameter with a stem 15–50 cm tall can stand cut in water for up to two weeks.

Optimum landing time

If the tubers are planted through seedlings, then it should be laid at the beginning of spring, and if you plan to plant immediately in open ground, then this is done at the beginning of May. That is, the bulbs of the plant, as well as the seedlings are planted only when the risk of sudden spring frosts disappears. In general, the question “How to plant a ranunculus correctly?” Has a simple solution if you know the basic rules of this process.

How to prepare the tubers

To prepare the tubers for planting, they are placed for several hours in a humid environment. This may be moss, wet sawdust or a sponge, with which they are moistened with water or a solution of potassium permanganate. Sometimes For better growing season, a special growth stimulant is added. Some gardeners recommend wrapping the tubers with a rag soaked in Appin solution. In this case, they are kept in this state for no more than six hours. During this time, they manage to get enough of the necessary moisture, without drawing in extra liquid, due to which the roots start to rot over time.

How to prepare the soil

The plant grows well in light, neutral, fertile soil. This may be black soil with humus or sand, or peat with chalk to neutralize the high acidity. It is absolutely impossible to plant buttercups in loam. It is important that the earth does not detain moisture, but at the same time absorbs it well during irrigation. Therefore, it is necessary to select a soil that is drained, warm, and rich in humus with an interval of medium response between pH 5–8. The groundwater level must be at least one and a half meters.

Do not forget about the drainage, otherwise the roots will rot. At the bottom of the pit you need to pour a little sand. The soil itself also requires preparation. Before planting, they dig it with compost and a solution of foundationol.

Scheme and depth of landing

Planting buttercups with tubers has its own characteristics. So, we must bear in mind that the plant does not tolerate transplants, so the place must be chosen in advance, after weighing everything well. To plant the tubers, a hole is dug out for them and placed at a depth of 5–8 cm. They are kept between 10–15 cm between them, and covered with sand or loose soil from above. If there is a chance of frosts, then instead of sand you can use straw or other covering material. At first, watering should be scant so as not to rot the roots. Usually, the first peduncles appear in two or three months, respectively, the time when the ranunculus is in bloom is about the middle of summer.

Proper care is the key to good flowering of the ranunculus.

As practice shows, out of 10 purchased tubers of buttercups, only 6–7 survive, and only half of them bloom out of flowers. The problem is that Buttercup roots very quickly lose moisture, and are also subject to hazards in the first couple of weeks of growth. Therefore, to increase the chances of getting a flowering plant, you need to know when to plant the buttercups, and also how to care for them during growth.

Did you know?Translated from Latin, Ranunculus means "frog", and he received such a name for the fact that some of its species like to settle in the marshland. In Italy, the plant is called “golden buttons of meadows”, and some retell the legend of how Jesus turned little stars into flowers and presented them to his mother as a sign of love. People unfamiliar with gardening people call buttercups miniprops or minipions. Today, experts have more than 600 species of plants.

Watering and feeding the soil

Ranunkulyus need to be watered regularly, but a little. As already mentioned, an excess of moisture leads to rotting of the roots. Externally, this problem is determined by dropping the buds and the appearance of mold on the leaves. To deal with this trouble is quite simple. It is necessary to reduce watering, remove damaged roots and loosen the soil around the plant.

Feed buttercups should be once every two weeks. For this, potash fertilizers are used at the rate of 40 g per square meter of soil. During planting and during flowering, it is recommended to add ash, potassium sulfate or potassium salt to the soil. As support, mullein or complex fertilizers are used.

Weeding and loosening the soil

The technique of growing plants is simple. In addition to proper watering and removal of flowering peduncles, mulch is used. It is also necessary to regularly loosen the soil so that the roots of the plant are well ventilated and not rotted.

Care for buttercups at home is similar, with the only difference being that regular weeding of the flower bed in this case is not relevant. For growing a flower on the balcony, it is recommended to plant several types of buttercups in one pot in order to create a beautiful composition. It is advisable to place the pot on the east or west side. But if it is on the south side, then you will have flowering as long as possible. In the question “How to grow ranunculus at home?”, Not only the topic of regular watering and feeding, but also spraying the plant is relevant.

It is important to time pruning of flowering inflorescences, because the plant produces flower stalks very thick and they can interfere with new flowers. From cut stalks form bouquets and put them in the water, where they are able to stand for at least two weeks.

Digging and storage of tubers

This stage of gardening is carried out after the plant ottsvetet and prisohnet. How long does a ranunculus bloom? In the middle lane, he pampers us with flowers from the end of May to the beginning of August - as soon as the heat sets, but before the heat even begins. However, digging up the tubers only after the leaves of the plant have completely dried, regardless of the month of the year. Before this, it is necessary to cut off its dry leaves and stems. Выкапывая клубни, будьте очень аккуратными, так как они хрупкие и ломкие.

Important!По своей сути ранункулюс — многолетнее растение, но в открытом грунте, при температуре ниже -7ºC, оно погибает. Поэтому на зиму его помещают в подвал, где температура держится на уровне +4…+6 ºC.After digging out the tubers, it is advisable to stand for half an hour in the foundation or for 15–20 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate, and then dry for three days in a dark place. For storage, they are wrapped in a paper bag or dry moss and stored in a ventilated place in boxes. If the winters in your area are not very harsh, the plant can be transplanted into a shaded place, and then covered with dry leaves, spruce leaves or other shelter for the winter.

Did you know?By the end of the growing season, 5-7 young shoots are found on each tuber. They can be used for further reproduction of plants, but with them the flowers are smaller, weaker and less juicy.

Ranunculus breeding

There are two main ways of plant reproduction: tubers and seeds. You can use the method of propagation by sprouts, but then the plant gradually degenerates.

Buttercup tubers have several processes and resemble a goose foot. For reproduction it is necessary to choose the largest of them, having at least four processes. It is important that they are solid, dense and sufficiently saturated with moisture.

When planting tubers, pay attention to the fact that the kidney is strictly vertically above the soil. If it is even a little overwhelmed, the plant may die. To fulfill this condition is quite simple, since it is easy to determine the location of the kidney. Proper placement of the tuber at the landing - fingers down.

Since the seeds of a buttercup seed germination is very small, gardeners rarely undertake to propagate the plant in this way. Those who decide on such an adventure, collect seeds from the first faded buds. Before the seed basket matures, it is wrapped in gauze so that the seeds do not fall out. Then removed and sent to storage.

Sprouting begin in late February or early March. Seeds are poured on the prepared soil and sprinkled on top with another 1.5-2 cm. From above they put glass or film and put it in a well-lit place. At the same time, the air temperature should be within + 15 ... + 17ºC, and the soil is periodically moistened. The first shoots appear two to three weeks after sowing. At this time, it is already possible to remove the protective cover and continue growing the seeds until the sprouts appear in a pair of leaves. Then they dive into individual tanks and, waiting for the right time, are planted in open ground.

Important!Planted in this way, seedlings will give flowers only next year, and with new tubers, flowering begins a couple of months after planting.

Pest control

The described plant, like any other, is subject to appearance on it pests and diseases. So, if you noticed on the leaflets powdery mildew (in the form of white mold) or brown spots - this signs of fungal diseases. They occur with excessive dampness, for example, due to excessive watering or during periods of rainy summer. Strongly affected plants destroy. If the fungus has spread slightly, arrange a light blowout of the ranunculus.

Of the pests in the root system of buttercups most often settle nematode worms. On the top of the plant are parasitic cabbage butterflies, thrips, mites, aphids, what can indicate silver and white spots on the leaves. To combat insects in hot summer weather, plants are treated with insecticidal drugs. As a preventive measure, two or three times a week, the ranculys are sprayed with a 0.2% solution of mercaptophos.

As we see, the cultivation of ranunculus is a relatively simple matter. It is only necessary to land them in suitable soil, in a ventilated sunny place and moderately watered. Caring for a plant at home is almost identical to caring in the garden.

Seed planting

Ranunculus can be grown from seed. With this method it is worth remembering that the plant is perennial, in the first year it does not bloom, but grows a nodule. In the fall, the roots must be dug up, preserved until spring, and already from them we can get flowering specimens.

Seeds are sown in a container with a light earth, almost on the surface. Top sprinkled with a couple of millimeters of substrate, moistened with a spray bottle, covered with film or glass, put on the window sill or under the lamp. Before germination (10–14 days) they maintain the temperature, 10–15 ° C, air, monitor humidity. After the emergence of sprouts grown as normal seedlings. Dive into separate pots at the stage of 4–5 leaves, land in the ground after the onset of stable heat.

What you need to know about care?

Most of the ranunculus troubles come during the sprouting and planting stage, it is unpretentious in caring.

The plant needs abundant watering, but without stagnant moisture. Loosen the soil regularly, providing air access to the roots, and timely remove weeds causing mildew and fungus.

During flowering, fertilizing with organic or mineral fertilizers and wood ash will not interfere. Remember that you need to fertilize on wet soil, so as not to cause burn roots.

The succulent leaves of the ranunculus loves aphid, spider mite, so when planting, do not forget to process the tubers with fungicides (Maxim), use insecticides in the care - at home it could be Karbofos, Akarin, Provado.

After flowering, as soon as the above-ground part dies, the tubers are dug out. Each maternal root for a season increases up to 7 daughter nodules. They are carefully separated, dried, cleaned from the soil. Store in paper bags in the basement or other cool place (up to + 10⁰).

Tip! If you want to collect your seeds, you should know that only flowers that are flowering first are suitable for this, when the daytime temperature did not exceed 20⁰. In the heat of pollination does not occur, and the seeds in the late flowers do not have time to ripen.

No matter how troublesome you are growing garden buttercups, they are worth it. Grateful plants cause genuine delight in all who see them, they fill the garden with bright colors and amazing tenderness.

Ranunkulyus - cultivation, care:

Nuances of growing a ranunculus

There are a few simple rules that will help you achieve positive results:

  1. No matter where you grow a flower, at home or on a plot, it should be noted that ranunculus does not tolerate transplants - the place for it must be finally and irrevocably chosen.
  2. During budding, flowering, it is necessary to make potash supplements (potassium salt, potassium sulfate); feeding with limestone will also be relevant.
  3. According to the recommendations of gardeners who have experience in growing this flower, fertilizers for ranunculus at all stages of growth should have biohumus.
  4. During the application of dressings, the flowers should be in the shade (evening, cloudy day), the amount of water for irrigation should be reduced - such “tricks” prolong the period of flowering of the ranunculus. For this period, indoor flower pots or containers should also be transferred to a shaded place.
  5. Note that this flower is not frost resistant. Before the onset of the first cold weather, you should have time to remove the tubers from the soil, usually this is done immediately after the leaves have dried.
  6. In one capacity, you can plant different varieties of colors, the resulting bush will delight your eyes with multicolor, bright shades.

During the flowering time, remove the flowering buds in time, so you will give strength, a stimulus to new flowers.

Ranunculus flower in the country

When planning to grow a flower in open soil, prepare the ground in advance: when digging, you can immediately add compost to it, as well as pour a solution of foundationol (the dosage is indicated on the package). What is not to the liking of the plant is the loamy soil, the ranunculus loves light fertile soil mixed with sand and humus with chernozem is also perfect for him. Peat with chalk (chalk neutralizes it) will be his liking, do not forget to provide the plant with good drainage - pour sand or very fine crushed stone at the bottom of the flower hole. The main requirement for the soil is good moisture absorbency (water should not linger long at the roots).

The ranunculus does not tolerate overwetting of the soil, therefore it is necessary to lay a good drainage in the landing hole, a layer of not less than 10 cm, from small stones or broken bricks.

This plant is not afraid of bright sunlight, but it feels much better in the penumbra (the colors will be brighter and the bloom lengthy). It is better not to plant a ranunculus on a windy stretch, also before planting you need to be sure that the cold will not return. Depending on the weather characteristics of your region, by the end of April / mid-May you can start planting tubers.

Planting material should be placed in wet sawdust or filled with water at room temperature. To water, you can add a little potassium permanganate or the drug "Kornevin", "Epin", "Zircon" - to stimulate growth. The tubers of the plant are a small “bud” with sharp tips, these tips are buried under the ground (down) to a depth of about 6-8 cm, the distance between the bulbs should be at least 10 cm. After falling asleep in the soil, for greater reliability, the place of the future flower bed can be covered with straw or a special material (spunbond). The first flower stalks will appear after a couple of months, and a little later you will be able to admire your own blooming ranunculus.

It is still worth mentioning seed growing, although this method is rather controversial - weak germination of seed, a lot of conventions. If you have a creative interest, want to try to grow a ranunculus from seeds, then be patient. As soon as the first buds bloom in your dacha, take the gauze and carefully wrap the flowers with it. This way you can collect your seeds after flowering.

Around the end of February, sow them in a container with fertile soil, cover with plastic film on top, put in a well-lit place. At the same time, the air temperature should be +15 .. + 18ºC, and the soil should be periodically moistened with irrigation (a spray bottle).

If you did everything correctly, the first shoots will appear after 15-20 days, by which time the film needs to be removed. When the leaflets grow in the seedlings, the time comes for picking - placing them in separate small pots. The ranunculus that has gained strength is planted in the ground in case of already established warm weather, but only next year it will be able to please you with flowering.

How to care for ranunculus?

Provide regular, but moderate watering for the plant - the roots should not be in excessive moisture, otherwise they may rot. If you have noticed traces of mold on the foliage or discarded buds, this is the first signal that the plant root system is over-wetted. In this case, remove the affected parts of the flower, loosen the soil, reduce the amount of moisture during watering.

As mentioned above, the flowering buds need to be cut off, regularly push the ground around the plants, feed them with organic matter twice a month. During flowering potassium supplements or wood ash are recommended.

If the ranunculus with the appearance of buds is sprayed with a solution of the Atlet preparation (1 ml per 1 l of water), timely remove the dry inflorescences, the flowering can be extended for 2-3 weeks.

It should be borne in mind that Persian buttercups attract not only admiring views of gardeners, but also parasites (aphids, thrips, spider mites). For prophylaxis, before starting flowering, I spray the plants with a solution of Karbofos (60 g per 8 l of water) or a 0.5% solution of soda ash.

If the summer is very hot and there has been no rain for a long time, the pests can become more active - spider mites, aphids, thrips, root nematodes represent a danger to ranunculus. Periodically inspect the plant, if you suddenly notice white spots on the foliage, do not pull with the processing. In this case, the appropriate insecticides will help you (“Biotlin”, “Karbofos”, “Mercapthos”), for prevention the plant can be irrigated with a weak solution, for example, mercaptophos (2 times a week, 0.2% composition).

Root worms-nematodes pose a more serious threat, they infest in the root system with excessive overmoistening and temperatures of +25 .. + 30 ºC. The fight against them is to extract the roots from the ground, rinsing with hot water (+55 ºC). The first indicators of the manifestation of the nematode - slowing down the growth of the plant, twisting the leaves, oval "ulcers" on the roots.

With the onset of autumn days, the ranunculus must be dug out, the yellowing or drying of the ground part of the plant serves as a signal to action. The leaves with stems are carefully cut with a knife, fragile roots are removed from the ground, making sure that they are not damaged. Since this plant is non-frost-resistant, it is better to spend the winter at a temperature of +4 .. + 7 ºC, for this, the tubers are wrapped in paper, stored in a ventilated dark place.

For the prevention of the future harmonious development of the flower, you can pre-treat the roots with a solution of foundationol (hold for 25-30 minutes), then allow them to dry well (about three days).

Ranunculus flowers - planting and care, photo

In truth, there is no particular difference in the care of a plant at home or on the site.

For home cultivation of ranunculus, it is recommended to purchase a bulky pot to plant different varieties at the same time. This tank must have drainage holes, the process of planting tubers is similar to the gardening method: pre-soaking the bulbs (for 24 hours), fine gravel (or sand) on the bottom of the pot, suitable for the peat substrate plant.

With proper embedding of the bulbs in the soil, their tops should look out a little. After planting, the ground should be watered well. The first time to keep the tank in a room with a temperature not higher than +12 .. + 15 ºC is very important (!). Regular, but very moderate watering is required.

When shoots appear, they will get stronger a little, the temperature can be raised to +20 .. + 23 ºC, however during budding, flowering it should not fall below +18 ºC. High temperatures during flowering are also undesirable - the plant will quickly bloom.

The most basic rule for home cultivation of ranunculus is the presence of good lighting + moderate watering (top, without overwetting the roots).

The flower shows itself well near the windows facing the east or west side; the window sill on the south side is ideal for placing ranunculus.

With the onset of summer, the pot can be taken out on the balcony, top dressings are brought together with water for irrigation. With the onset of summer heat, the plant can be irrigated with water from a spray bottle.

After the flowering period is over, the capacity with the flower is transferred to a cool shaded place, where the ranunculus will still grow for some time, gradually falling into a period of rest. Before “falling asleep” foliage, the plant stems turn yellow, dry out - this is normal. All this time, the flower should be in a room where the mercury index does not exceed +15 .. + 17 ° C. After the outer part is completely dried, the plant should be transplanted into fresh soil, and after about a month you will be able to see new sprouts.

With proper care for the entire growing season, each tuber gives 5 or 7 shoots, they are carefully removed from the ground, transplanted to new containers or stored until spring in a cold place (basement or a fridge shelf for vegetables). It should be borne in mind that the tubers that have lain in the cold will be somewhat weaker than the fresh ones (the buds will be slightly smaller), which is why many gardeners prefer to buy ranunculus with the onset of spring, to buy it fresh tubers.

This beautiful flower has all the necessary qualities in order to win your sympathy. During flowering, it will miraculously decorate your cottage or apartment, will be a great addition to the gift, if you decide to cut a few buds, form a bouquet of ranunculus. In its beauty, it is not inferior to the queen of the garden - the rose, and the luxurious colors can be a serious competitor to well-deserved garden favorites.

Plant a ranunculus in your area; planting and caring for it will not be a problem for you. This plant requires standard care with some nuances - the individual characteristics of this garden culture.

Step-by-step landing instructions

To get the desired result, you need to follow simple rules in the process of preparation, planting and care:

  1. They dig up the soil in the autumn, remove excess plant residues and weeds, fertilize.
  2. Before planting for two weeks, it is necessary to lightly disinfect the soil, dig up to a depth of 15-20 cm, and apply fertilizer to saturate the soil (the bridge, manure, ash, etc.).
  3. Planting time is chosen warm, usually it is May, sometimes the second half of April (also warm).
  4. Most often, nodules are used for planting buttercups, they germinate more steadily. Before planting them in the ground, it is necessary to immerse them in a growth stimulator for 3.5 hours (it is sold in any specialty store).
  5. In the pits 6.5-7.5 cm they need to be planted narrowed side down, and between them the distance should not exceed 14-15.5 cm.
  6. At the time of planting add rotten fertilizers: compost, manure, etc.

When flowering occurred, and the leaves began to dry, you need to get the tubers from the ground, shake off the remnants of them and put them in a dry, warm place. This can be a box or a roll of paper, and the temperature should not fall below 6 ° C. If cultivation is carried out with seeds, then it is necessary to prepare the soil by pouring boiling water over it.

Tip # 1. Film with seedlings must be removed and left up to 4 hours a day to allow the soil and the plant to "breathe."

Types of landing Ranunkulyus

Buttercups can be planted in different ways, and in each case there are nuances:

  • The use of seed cultivation of buttercups is considered the most unreliable enterprise. Its seeds are not planted directly in the ground in the garden. This is done in February at home, buried in the soil of a light composition to a depth of two cm. Then they are covered with glass or film and put in a bright place where the temperature will be up to 16 ° C. Within 2.5-3 weeks it is necessary to maintain soil moisture, and after planting each sprout in a separate pot. In warm weather, transplant seedlings into the garden.

  • when planted with cuttings (small shoots, twigs), they should be planted immediately after separation into the nutrient soil, and the vertical and greenhouse effect must be ensured,
  • Buttercups and shoots that grow on tubers propagate. Before planting, they are soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate, a growth stimulator, or simply placed in a humid environment, after which the tubers can be planted in warm nutrient soil.

Planting and care: features, timing

Buttercups are planted in the second half of spring, when the soil is already heated, in the form of seedlings or tubers. Seedlings are prepared from February, so in the spring they are already quite strong plants, during cultivation the temperature is kept at least 15 degrees, then the air can be a little cooler, so that later adaptation can be easier on the outside.

The soil is prepared in different ways, depending on the need:

  • compost is considered the most convenient and nutritious fertilizer, it can be made by hand without additional costs,
  • mowed grass is a very convenient mulch for those who have a lawn and mow it regularly, a rich source of nitrogen. The main thing is to comply with the measure, so as not to burn the plants,
  • fallen rotten leaves are also easily accessible and are a breeding ground for soil

Ranunkulyus likes well-lit areas, but not too picky, so you can choose a place for him where the sun will shine about 4-5 hours a day. This plant likes a moist environment, it needs to be maintained, but for longer flowering it is recommended to water less often.

Tip #2. NDo not overdo it with the amount of water, it should not stagnate, top watering is also preferable.

Fertilizing buttercups is recommended during growth with potassium-rich minerals:
